@@adnapNot just a little help, lol, Lauren Christy fully wrote this song. All artists since 2000 simply put their name in the credits (co-writing), just not to show themselves as label's puppets. If Avril a true songwriter, she would be more consistent with good lyrics, but time showed, that her first two albums were written by different people comparing to third and other albums after that... If you was such a good songwriter at 16, how you became so bad after first two albums.

Such a great song. Recently learned that Rhianna sampled the "yeah, yeah" part of this song on one of her tracks. She also wrote Breakaway and gave it to Kelly Clarkson. That song is a beast. Avril is so talented.

“Isn’t anyone trying to find me?” I always took it to mean either: “Is there anyone aware or realizing that I’m lost and trying to locate me and help me find my way back to a familiar and more comfortable place?” or “Is there anyone else out there who feels alienated and ill fitted, looking for someone to relate to like me, like I am?” Definitely felt all that as much as could be as a teen when this came out and am relieved atm to know other people relate to the lyrics and feel a similar melancholy or emotional heaviness from the song.

I really miss the sound of tiny imperfections, that comes with the inflection of raw vocals filled with emotions. Something that is lost with auto tune being on most everything these days. It’s killed the humanity in the singing voice.

"Complicated" was the first song of hers I remember hearing. I happened to be flipping through the channels one day, and it happened to be playing on MuchMusic (Canada's answer to MTV) at that moment, at a time when it still had music videos. I liked her music, but my younger sister eventually became a big enough fan to dress as Avril for Halloween one year.

She's been singing for 20 years and it's amazing that almost every song she releases, she writes them. Light songs or punk rock both make me strong and help me a lot when I face depression. She suffers from serious Lym disease, but she is still producing great music in 2022. This disease makes her voice weaker when singing live, you can search for more of her songs, she will make you amazed and happy❤️

Wonderful review and reaction to this video which is one of my all-time favorites. What makes this video so interesting and even haunting from today's world is that everybody at that club place not one of them is looking at their smartphone or Android because they didn't exist in 2001. That wouldn't come until several years after this video in 2007. Also if you can even imagine, there was no Twitter tiktok Instagram or Facebook. This video documents a whole other world that is now gone and never to return. And of course the lyrics speak to a kind of alienation or feeling of isolation, that you nicely expounded upon. Ironically today with all the social media that we have we're now becoming even more disconnected I.e. we're so connected we are more and more disconnected with ourselves and we don't even realize it.

I can relate to what you're saying about having a bit of cognitive dissonance when it comes to some music, but you have to, in my opinion, go with your heart; does it speak to you emotionally, yes, then the hell with that little voice in your head telling you you shouldn't like a particular style of music, be it: pop-punk, show tunes or even Gregorian chants (Sage advice from a wise Uncle)

8:27 it's very likely that Avril had the same exact experience when she wrote the song. She's from a really tiny town in Ontario, and by the time she wrote this she was living alone in either New York City or Los Angeles (I'm not quite sure of the exact timeline here). It must've been quite the intimidating experience for a 16 year old.

I was probably a couple months into being a high school sophomore around the time Avril released I'm With You. The song really captured that sort of loneliness one would feel during a cold autumn/winter when saying bye to friends after school or when hanging out at a party and not having them around. Like the song implies there was a longing for someone you might not know but have a familiarity with to break that solitude and bring you a new experience, whether it was making a new friend, having a conversation, or trying something different.

Her voice on her first record, i love the deeper tone. Something in her voice on this record thats somehow gone since her 2th album got made. Her vocals on ''Let Go'' resonate more with me than any other record. Now i am a conspiracy nut that believes she has used (Uses) a double throughout her career, with clear vocal proof on live performances during the mid/late 00s and 2010s, and body/face changes also within months to eachother. I don't believe the ''shes dead'' theory tho, But my research/observation only makes sense during live performances, All things aside its still odd that her studio vocals changed during 2002 Let Go and 2004 Under My Skin. I always wondered why and how. Were talking age 17 to age 19.

Don't forget that she also has Gothic influences to a certain degree. Might be that's doing it's own little part to these hopeless and lost "emo"tions and perhaps this is what you mentioned about the cellos & violins that are not really usual for pop music. Maybe here we are seeing some kind of 'Evanescence ballad' influence. One thing I wanna poit out are the moments with her powerful yelling.. When I'm watching to some Vocal Trainers reacting to Avril, I'm not quite sure if it's the correct way to compare her Voice to other Voices on a standard level. Because sometimes I wonder if Avril's powerful screaming is more on a aesthetic female side/level in comparison to for example "The Scream" oft Chester/Linkin Park. I might be wrong but to me that appears a lot more logic than Nonsense like comparing Avril to Britney or Taylor Swift directly. Even if she's smashing it anyway, but.. Like I said, I might be wrong, but thats my personal view on it..

ooo glad you mentioned the "clearly fake" period of music in the mid to late 2000's! there's a video essay on here somewhere that talks about how one of the glib, kinda faux-optimistic things people would say after 9/11 and once war was declared was that "well at least we'll get some great music out of this," but it never happened. it was like music (and media in general) had to be either massively, divertingly happy and empty in order to not think about it all, or it had to be very patriotic. if you tried to talk about the biggest issues in any specific was, you were ruined like the dixie chicks. the only 2 big, somewhat political songs i can think of that came out in those years was american idiot and where is the love
