I think he definitely starts taking himself seriously when it comes to the Church and child molestation in particular. There’s the Pope Song (obviously) but also he did one about an Australian priest who was being shielded by the Vatican (come home Cardinal Pell)
The hair and makeup are from his theater time, where he had to ensure that people in the last row could read his expression. It became his trademark, that and him being barefoot most the time. If you watch the newer stuff like 'I take lonely tonight' the at home piano version, you see that he aged very well.
That is an antique tecnique from Greek times, they wore masks with expressions for each scene and stilts to ensure audience could see their emotions and acting better aswell
Elton John has expressed similar issues with being an introvert behind a piano and needing to create an image, which was one of the (many) drivers behind his own flamboyant costumes and glasses. Not sure if you picked up the bars from Stairway to Heaven he played at the end? Also the pants like Kylie was a reference to Kylie Minogue, a famous Australian singer who did the short hot pants thing 😂 Thanks so much for doing this, you know I’ve been patiently waiting! A suggestion for the next one is “If I didn’t have you” (the full uncut version is essential!) or Inflatable You.
This was filmed in 2007 as well, just as he was really getting started. Funny to hear him sing about 'gigs that noone knows about' in concert at the Royal Albert Hall 😆
Rock and roll nerd is the title of both this song as well as a 2009 documentary about Tim's early career. I'm not sure that there’s anywhere that it's currently legally available which is a shame, but it really does the explanation of Tims look and background. And is I think the only place where you can find one of my favorite Tim songs "Understand It" that ends the movie.
There is a documentary about him and he talks about the eye-liner in it. The crazy hair was to stand out and be noticed, but the eye-liner was more of a conscious decision. He stated that, where his hands are always on the keys, his eyes and facial expressions are the best way to convey expressions during his songs, and the eye-liner helps draw out these expressions and convey them to the audience more easily. Tim is such a brilliant musician. There are soo many true bangers that he has. I hope you continue down this path and check out both his older and new stuff. For an older one, I would suggest "some people have it worse than me" or "Inflatable You" and for some of the newer stuff, I would suggest "The Fence" or "Airport Piano" (a song he truly wrote while waiting to catch a flight at an airport. I just got introduced to your channel and have been loving it. Please, keep up the Tim Minchin!
My favourite serious Tim Minchin song is "not perfect". My upbringing was very different to Tim's (which sounds idyllic by comparison) but I also find that people who grow up not facing a lot of struggle or difficulty often don't have that strength of will or don't have it honed to the same degree as those of us who dragged ourselves out of the things we experienced. I think Tim addresses that in this song, though he talks about it in terms of angst that he doesn't have to draw upon for inspiration.
His new album is great. Everything off of it is very different to this older work and songs like 15 minutes are fantastic commentaries on society. I’ll take lonely tonight is a really personal song.
@@troystewart7730 You sound like my kind of person! I have something of a shrine with the vinyls of Apart Together and Matilda, and a bunch of art made by fellow members of Tim’s online fan community (the Minchkins are the best people on the internet, and last month I married the love of my life, who I met in that group!)
@@allisonbergh4429 I only have 2 new gold auto’s on his photos and 3 copies auto lp and cd I thought I had an auto copy of storm. But it’s not like the one for sale. I have a sealed hardcover but it’s not in another cover and I have t open d it I get mad at times when people only know prejudice and dark side. Watch the documentary and lern how OLD dark side is
If you want to hear Tim doing a non comedy song, PLEASE check out "Heaven on their minds" or "Superstar" from when he played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar! In my opinion he is Amazing in the role and his voice is awesome! It was kind of life changing for me.
Ah, one of my favourites! Awesome to see you reacting to it. Definitely put 'If I didn't have you' on the Tim Minchin list. Hilarious love song for his wife.
Like a lot of Christian traditions, Easter is kind of a repackaging of other much older beliefs and tieing it into a Christian bundle. I believe the name comes from a fertility goddess named Eostre, I can't remember specifics beyond that but I do believe she was tied to the other iconography (eggs, rabbits) in some way. Eggs signify life and bearth so that fits with fertility goddess... ...anyway, tangent over. Good video love watching people discover Tim. He's so amazing! Gave you a sub!
if you can ever get your hands on a copy of the Australian mini series "upright" which will amaze anyone, some of the finest drama i have ever seen which tim stars in with the girl from "house of dragons. simply brilliant
There’s a recent Tim Minchin on The Origins Podcast with Lawrence Krauss on YT if you’re interested in listening to a fascinating chat. Tim is profoundly brilliant, well-spoken and extremely down-to-earth.
Tim has a few other songs like this where he's more focused on the expectations associated with his career. 'Dark Side' is a really good example but, if you want a "deep cut", he has a beat poem called 'Mitsubishi Cult' which talks about the frustrations that came with being an early-career musician (he doesn't perform it very often any more since he's become more sucessful but there's versions online).
He did Mitsubishi Colt in his last tour, and included a “Glossary of Terms” for all the people in the audience too young to remember a pre-internet-porn world 😆
Now 53 I wish for 30. 30 was bad because college has been over for longer than I was in it. LET ME HAVE THE CHANCE TO SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?!?!??? Please. * do you think you’d react to INFLATABLE YOU with your better half? I love I found you. Not all are my thing but every one I do watch you enrich the videos. And you do it on the fly- it’s not prepared lines. (The chicken line is him slipping his love of animals vs big farm industry). THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE of a song where TIM takes 3 different songs/tempos and weaves them together. Keep them coming! Loving EVERYTIME. The personal- I lived the same
Troy, you are incredible! Thank you very much for your support and for the suggestion of "Inflatable You". I will absolutely bring HalRae along to react to that, mind telling me who the artist is so I know I watch the right one? I appreciate your eagerness to support the channel, truly it means so much that you enjoy the content that much. That being said, I still don't feel ready to ask for monetary donations from viewers. Maybe that day will come eventually, but until then, I hope you enjoy the ride! ✌️✌️
@@JustJmax Inflatable you is by Tim Minchin as well. I second this recommendation, it's a great song. In the same aspect as reacting to Tim Minchin with HalRae, I would recommend "If I didn't have you".
@@JustJmax I am sorry- it’s TIM MINCHIN. Inflatable you. It’s a love song and this video- I normally try to link the video- and version- he is singing at a breast cancer fundraiser I’m an old-53- guy without much to do so your videos can rank pretty high on the fun factor of the day. And you can set up a way to support and NOT ASK just allow. This is sorta a first date who is paying situation. He also has a song called CONFESSIONS. YOU NEED WIFE FOR IT TOO. If you haven’t done it. The version- skip to last 10 seconds- one versions he overdubs about copyright the other is the whole song. It’s brilliant. But here’s inflatable you- and being married you know ITS THE WORDS NOT SAID THAT ARE LOUDEST (that’s a hint). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e6raVzrbqrM.html
@@JustJmax consider, just as you start each episode just a guy who like music. The fact you didn’t set all the ways to pay set up first- let alone still nothing- that’s what I like. Maybe just me. So think about it. Meanwhile- I gave you a couple to watch as a couple- that will be good. I also have for you- this is a Russian documentary that happens to follow Tim when he had short red very curly hair and used an accordion often. In fact you see and hear him explain as he gets his now famous hair It’s starts he is like every ‘talent’ and this shows you real time how in 2 years he went intergalactic. “Overnight”. I will alert you- the moment he “HITS” is while he is sharing a dressing room with 2 men in capes. Just capes. It’s 90 min? So whenever you have nothing else- it’s fascinating from nothing to top award winner. OH AND YOU HEAR HOW HIS CAREER NEARLY ENDED WHEN HE USED THE N WORD IN A SONG. And it’s not prejudice ✌🏼🦶🇦🇺🦶🎤🧑🏽🦰
There's a later song called "I am so fucking rock", so perhaps he changed his mind on that one! If you want to keep with Tim Minchin but branch out from music, his Nine Life Lessons speech is a good one. And it too lays out some of his personal philosophy. Alternatively, if you want to branch out from Tim Minchin but stick with music, I currently have "Tom's Diner" stuck in my head, and would like to inflict it on someone else. (It's a good song, but an earworm.) Ditto "I Drank too Much" by Flo and Joan.
Loving these videos my dude! I'm a big Tim fan and Bo Burnham fan so it's really cool to see someone else discovering them and experiencing them for the first time. If you want something a little different, you could have a look at the song Congress by Toska? They're a 3 piece instrumental prog metal band from the UK, and all 3 are brilliant musicians in their own right. Another side of the coin, if you wanted something a bit more mainstream, would be to check out Alter Bridge if you don't know them already. (They don't really have any bad songs but Words Darker Than Their Wings live from the Royal Albert Hall is just jawdropping) They're incredible!
1) You can reinvent yourself at ANY age, so says the 59 year old entrepeneur. 2) Start getting in the habit of stretching before getting out of bed in the morning and always before doing any sort of upper body work (even carrying groceries). If you're feeling It at 30, you'll be constantly aching at 60. 3) Hydrate, even if it's cold outside or if you're not thirsty. 4) Please excuse my 2 cents. I'm terminally Mom.
Tim Minchin once again bringing another great song. His view on the world and himself is unique and often intricate lyrically. If you want a video to sit back and laugh at, watch The Definitive Winnebago Man. Not a song. Not a group. Just a funny ass video to watch.
On turning 30... Buckle in and check out Garfunkel and Oats 29/31. They'd be a good mix to review as well. Think of them as less musically inclined female Tim Minchins, but with /really/ dirty mouths.
It's not a rip off. It's a musical based on an opera. La Bohème itself is based on the book Les scènes de la vie de bohème. You really should watch either rent or tock tick boom.
Sorry... gotta correct you on the turning 30 thing. I know it sounds very cliche but turning 30 is nothing but "hype" by younger people and the media.... it's utterly meaningless. By the time you're 35-36 you finally start to feel like you've found your place in the world. You start to 'settle in", which is NOT the same as "settling", you just finally stop caring about what other people think and just get on with living your own life in the manner that suits you best and start leaving the idiots and the a-holes behind you in the past where they belong. Unfortunately, after that, 40, 45 and 50 blink past and you're suddenly "old" and the idiots and a-holes no longer care what "you" think. Which, in the long run, actually works out for the best... but it is kind of disappointing when you're opinion stops being "relevant" to anyone under 35 because they haven't grown up yet... but yeah... ouch. I guess what I'm saying is get over the 30 thing... the next 7 or 8 years are going to be absolutely fascinating for you. Cheers!
Where was your review 10 years ago? So typical , you have just flooded the interweb with your irrelevant views , because you can earn some u tube bux !
