Love that technique elemental builder. I wish more games had less prewritten spells and gave you the tools to just build your own

I ran Grim World years again and it was much bigger hit for my table than DW. Like you noted with the Skirmisher, it added just enough to the combat angle that it flowed a bit better and made more sense to the players from other systems.

Great video as usual man! You will have to let us know how the supplement works in actual play. Grim world is among my favorite DW supplements, along with perilous wilds, Inverse world, and Dark heart of the dreamer (basically Planescape). I’ve always loves the grim world playbooks. Interesting to see how they play out!.

Another great video! One of the things I like most about DungeonWorld is that you can completely change the game experience by selecting or removing the playbooks (classes) that are available for play and tweaking the GM moves to match the world/experience you are going for. Admittedly, this is nothing new -- d20, Gurps, HERO and many other systems have been doing that for decades -- but combined with the ease of play and flexibility of the system, it makes for a great "pick up and play whatever you want with a minimum of prep" system. Most other games are far more involved prep-wise, with more intricate rules, so "changing worlds" is a lot of work. But you could throw together a handful of space opera or super hero playbooks and play those genres in a few minutes. Play balance is not an issue since you just customize the moves and opponents/challenges to match the abilities of the characters in line with the fiction of the world.

Tbf I think it’d be easier to just play a different PbtA game than try and do all that homebrew to DW yourself
@KootFloris

Hmmm, it feels a bit like a collector finding a new series or a new set of toys. Yet for me it still feels like more of the same, just with some new combo's, slightly different dice role options. I think the true new, lies in adventures with very different perspectives, goals and dilemma's. Consider a world where you have to save the monsters that want to eat you, or the whole eco system dies. Consider a powerplay between sides and then finding the only option out is to stop the war, rather than choosing sides. Consider a game where the quest giving boss slowly demands more and more cruel deeds, up to enslaving whole towns of enemies, to win a seemingly 'good' war. Consider a game where each player runs a town as GM to create much bigger cultural differences. Etc.

Personally, I think the game that "fixes" Dungeon World is not an add-on, but a whole reconstruction of the classes and moves themselves. That's Dungeon World Unlimited. Which is a reboot of DW wherein classes, moves and mechanics are re-written in order to be more narrative-focused than mechanic focused. You should check DWU

Dungeon World as it is actually isn't that exciting. It feels like baseline DnD but of course more narrative and streamlined, but the supplements and all the hacks that was born from it keep it relevent. PBTA is more a philosophy than a system as this point.
@tabletopbro
@tabletopbro Год назад
Spot on with “PbtA is a philosophy at this point.” And like many philosophies it’s reaching this weird place where people like to shit on other people’s favorite PbtA games for not being “PbtA enough” (this isn’t really relevant to your comment in just ranting lmao)

@@tabletopbro Gatekeepers will always exist in every hobby. No amount of agendas or principles can fix the brains of a rigid purest douchebag. The essence of Pbta is about inclusivity and collaboration, and anyone who looks down on others is missing the entire point.

My segue from Dungeon World was Ironsworn. The thing I'm not a fan of with regards to PbtA is the necessity of playbooks. In more trad games, I've always preferred point-buy to class and level, and while I find the design and play methodology of PbtA to be much more exciting than with trad games, the regress into classes kinda irked me (though multiclass moves helped lessen the blow). With Ironsworn, rather than picking a class, you pick Assets, which are a trio of themed moves. When you acquire an Asset, you first get access to only one of its benefits, but you can spend XP to acquire the other benefits or to acquire a new Asset (though that's more expensive). By default, each character starts with three Assets. Also, since Assets come in a deck (which you can print out for free or buy separately), I think the implicit ruling is that each Asset can only be acquired by one character in the group (making them into niches). The closest PbtA game that I've seen do something similar is City of Mists. There's also my system, the Quick & Dirty RPG System, which plays very much like a PbtA game, but doesn't use playbooks. Instead, the information you fill out on the character profile informs the player and the GM what the character's areas of expertise are. The Quick & Dirty RPG System can be found here, along with a comprehensive example of play in the full-size preview: www.drivethrurpg.com/product/391317/Quick--Dirty-RPG-System

@quickanddirtyroleplaying
@quickanddirtyroleplaying Год назад
@@tabletopbro Looking forward to a potential Ironsworn-related video. Also, though the amount of moves may be overwhelming, it becomes much more manageable when you keep in mind what category of play you are in, whether you're exploring, in combat, or going about in a settlement.

The first RPG I published started as a Dungeon World hack. I it I replaced the racial move for a origin move. And then I create racial moves that you can pick instead of your class ones. I have a total of 42 races in my game, each with 8-20 racial move options hehe. Also, my game as a total of 20 basic classes + 40 especializations (that are not linked to any particular class). And since Dungeon World is under a creative commons license, I would call any and every material to be "oficial". Or better yet, I'd just say that "oficial" is a meaningless word for PbtA games.

I have never heard someone say Wendigo in such a way that it sounded 'dirty'. (( its pronounced When Dey Go, you pronounce the 'i' more like an 'e' )) Though yeah, Dungeon World is very much a "if D&D had a baby but had to convince that PbtA is the Father to get child support" kind of game. Because I can get 'why' PbtA nerds wouldn't like it due to the fact that its got a ton of simulationist rules in it, where PbtA has a lot of narrative rules. Still, the playbooks are fun, the Inquisitor and the Slayer feel like two sides of the same coin, one kills for pleasure, the other kills for piety.

@@dm4life579 thanks for the tips. Probably the best way to get started. I just think it's so cool how you can hack this game. It feels like the system I've been looking to run my homebrew world in. I know it goes against the spirit of DW to have established lore before hand, but I've had to change so much of my lore to make it fit into other systems where this feels like I can just use my world as is.
