I turned a small, boring nook in my parent's newly renovated basement into a pseudo-office space by building a DIY Floating Desk with hidden storage.

A potential use for the holes from the hard-ware installation mis-adventure (I do stuff like this all the time) would be to drill holes through and use them for wires or charging cables. If not, it would be a fun project to cut custom plugs and fill the holes. Would be great practice for potential future projects, such as cutting out knot holes or defects out of wood.

If I don't have the tools to screw in the supports the way you have, i.e. putting the screws in at an angle after the back support is already on the wall, should I screw the supports into the length of wood along the back before attaching it to the wall?

WOW!!! Beautifully done and you explain everything so well. Very detailed and specific but yet also easy to understand and follow along. I found your channel when I was searching for tips on how to arrange furniture in small/awkwardly shaped rooms and that led me to your apartment tour, which I watched and then commented on. I was so impressed that you took the time to respond to so many of the comments (including mine!) that I subscribed and started checking out your other videos. I love decorating and doing diy home projects but I have to admit I've always been too intimidated to use power tools myself. I always end up passing that part of the projects to my boyfriend or even my 72 year old mother... I have to say she's a total OG with her own tool box and a collection of power tools that rival most men's. Lol But I think I FINALLY might have the confidence to try and tackle a project myself. Particularly this one bc I've been wanting a floating desk like this one in my bedroom to use as a vanity. I'm hoping to get the supplies together and start in the next week or so! I don't have an enclosed area like the one you made yours in so I guess I can apply the same idea to a corner right? What about just coming straight out of the wall, say in the middle of the wall, without anything on either side. Is that possible? It wouldn't have much weight put on it at all. I could even hang the mirror above it instead of setting it's weight on the desk. So it would only need to hold enough weight for makeup and some hair products.
@diyhuntress

So happy you’re here and thank you for all of the love! I would love to see you tackle this build! 😍 You can totally make this in a corner or in the middle of a wall! Nice job looks really good! I have a question for you as I wouldn't mind building a similar desk - does the storage part make it uncomfortable to sit at the desk and work (legs fitting underneath comfortably) as there is quite a bit of "height" to the overall desk between the bottom and counter top? I'm presuming we would compensate for that by installing it higher? Any advice you can share?
@diyhuntress
@diyhuntress 4 года назад
I actually installed it at counter top height for this exact reason. 😊 Instead of a desk chair, I opted for an adjustable barstool. The desk itself is only about 7 inches thick in total, so it’s not a huge inconvenience. It’s actually pretty comfortable to sit at.

Looks really nice, you could have used pocket holes to fix the top instead of using the Brad nailer, I am wondering how strong those hinges will be if you leant on them. Well done and I think your parents are very lucky having a daughter who is creating some nice projects.
@diyhuntress
@diyhuntress 4 года назад
Thank you! I thought about that, but I didn’t want to waste any usable space on the outside 2x6s since they’re only 15” deep and I needed as much support as possible without splitting the boards when drilling into the studs. I for sure won’t be putting heavy leaning pressure on that cabinet door... it’s not structural, like any typical cabinet door, though. It’s just there to hide my mess, really. 🙈
@Dosbomber
@Dosbomber 4 года назад
I wonder if the cabinet hinges would have been just as strong and effective if they'd been mounted much closer to the 2x6 supports, instead of perfectly balanced as they are. They look like they might get in the way of moving things in and out of the storage area as they're mounted now. Great use of the space though, and it looks good, too.
@diyhuntress
@diyhuntress 4 года назад
I tried to lay it out and I would have had to add an extra hinge to compensate. So, I decided to go minimal. They’re not too bad! It’s a shame I could install the flat part of the hinge inside the little cubbies... either way, I can still access what I need. 😊

If you wanted to make a floating shelf that was really strong you should first secure the small cut 2x6''s first onto the long 2x6 then secure the entire frame on to the wall. Lot stronger than pocket screws...
@diyhuntress
@diyhuntress 4 года назад
That is another option, sure! But, that’s the beauty of DIY. You do what works for you. Pocket hole screws & pocket hole joints have been tested many times over and have failed in the “hundreds of pounds” range. So, I think the desk will be just fine the way it’s built for our space. 😊

I thought those pocket holes weren't going to hold but then you did the syrngh test as if you were reading my mind almost a year before I watched the video hahaha. Although not sure if your weight could be considered a strength test as you're fit. Again, great to see how mistakes are done and how to fix them and then sing the victory opera. 😆 another awesome creation. I need to replicate that as well.

Ahahah - opera is the secret ingredient! Also, pocket holes are deceptively strong! Glad you enjoyed!

How do decide which kreg setting to use for your Euro hinges? It confuses me and I'm horrible at it.

My best advice would be to practice on some scrap pieces until you find the setting that matches your hinge best. This will be super important with setting the depth stop.

Thanks for showing the whoopsies as well as we all have them! The other day I was making a keepsake box for my niece and mounted the latches upside down because I was in a hurry to get it done for Christmas. Needless to say, after a lot of disappointment in myself and a trip to the store to get some red oak wood filler all was okay. Keep up the great work and I am excited to see more of your awesome projects!
