Hey ya'll. Just a quick note. I've had COVID for a little over a month and really sick. I've been really isolated and it can get lonely. I make sure to watch your videos everyday and it's helped. It's funny how alone this virus makes you feel because it's so contagious but ya'll have been like friends. I'm always one of the people to respond to your videos first because it's just refreshing to see real people have real reactions. So, thanks for helping through these hard days. I'm starting to get better- so, thanks again. I appreciate ya'll.
Hello Friend, I’m in tears after reading this message. We thank you so much for allowing us in your heart. We do these reactions to reach wonderful people like you. Praying for complete healing for you. Thank you for spreading the love.
It wasn't torture from the enemy. The soldier lost his arms, legs, hearing, voice, eyesight from the mine/artillery shell. . He was trapped in his body with no way to communicate other than bobbing his head in Morse code. He was in a hospital where they were trying to help him but really weren't. He was in physical and mental agony and wanted it to end so he was bobbing out the Morse code message KILL ME. The nurse tried to help him but was stopped. The song is all about the horrors of war most of us ignore, are unaware of or overlook.
@@limitlessbyvlenoir5339 It's based on the book Johnny Got His Gun; Metallica bought the rights to the film to include clips from it in the music video
@@doctorhrtattack1185 I was meaning musically but I can see that take 100% about how they took the story from the book if that was what you were saying.
The song isn’t about war, it’s not anti-war or anything that. It’s set in war time, but the song’s message itself doesn’t pertain to war. It’s about the helpless situation he’s in. James Hetfield said it himself, it’s ultimately about being trapped. If the message of this song was presented as a meal, being trapped in that sort of hellish isolation would be the food, and war would just be the plate it’s being served on.
He was a soldier and stepped on a land mine that took his arms, legs, sight, speech, everything...he can’t holler out in pain, can’t move, eat anything! Imprisoned in his own body or what’s left of it
This has a whole new meaning to me since I returned from Iraq. I would like to encourage any veteran out there who feels lost and without hope to call the veterans crisis line. They really can help.
I’m not military. But my love for our troops is solid and deep. Please find help if you need it. We still love every single one of you... you are important to this country and world. ♥️♥️♥️
@@bonesmama1273 they're not actually important to the world... and my advice to all of them is "stay home and don't go to made up wars by people who only want lands, oil and money...stay safe be smart"
Landmine has taken my sight Taken my speech Taken my hearing Taken my arms Taken my legs Taken my soul Left me with life in hell. Its a song about a movie, JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN. About a soldier in WW1.
Video is inspired by Johnny Got His Gun. The movie was a novel before it became a movie. One is the reason why I looked up the movie for to understand it more. The song itself is inspired by the movie as well.
a side note for this is that it was going to cost more to license the rights to the movie for the video than buying the rights so metallica now own the rights to the movie
The title 'Johnny got His Gun' play on the phrase "Johnny get your gun", a rallying call that was commonly used to encourage young American men to enlist in the military in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
@@loudnoises213 yep! So right especially during The Great War - WWI. I read this at 19 years old (I'm 50 now) and I still get that feeling like I did at 19.
A lot of people claim that this song is anti-war, and that's understandable, but inaccurate. According to the writer of the song, it's not anti or pro war, it just acknowledges that there is a steep price to pay for war. A subtle difference perhaps, but a difference nonetheless.
I saw the movie when I was young because Donald Sutherland is in it. It's really hard to take. There are aspects of the story this video doesn't really show. He has all these conversations and has all these experiences but with no sensory input he can't tell if they're memories, dreams, or hallucinations.
The fact that y'all are speechless says it all. You felt what the song is about. Y'all understand it better than you think. As a side note this was the first Metallica song I learned on drums. Keep it up and I'll keep watching!
So glad to see people dive outside their “comfort” zone and delve into the deep side of what can be when it comes to music. Keep doin y’all and god bless on y’all’s journey
Truly a masterpiece of music. And perhaps the greatest metal song of all time. Beyond powerful in every aspect of it. Lyrics, melody, visuals......all of it.
This is one of Metallica's greatest songs. It's a lot to take in all at once, especially with all the movie clips. "Fade to Black" is another outstanding track that you may enjoy, but I would suggest doing the audio version only. It's also got a pretty deep message.
My dad was in Vietnam, he is 75 now and still wont talk bout it, its got too be hard to keep inside, but it never change how much i love him, and for the rest of the soliders who lost there life, or came back a different man from the bottom of my heart TY, and for the rest of familys appreciate what u have, before its gone. God bless ♥️
Them first music video for any single. They've used the clips from "Johnny Got His Gun" to illustrate perfectly what's going on in this song!!!! This one tells the story of a soldier who's got stuck inside his own body: he can't hear, move, speak, he can barely do anything. This was also them second anti-war song after "Disposable Heroes" (1986; "Master Of Puppets" album)
As someone who suffers from depression, it really hits me every time when he says, “If I had arms I could kill myself. If I had legs I could run away.”
I have been a Metallica fan since their beginning and they are very good at evoking emotion by making the music and lyrics play on each other to take you where they want you to be. I have never seen or heard something that is so deeply disturbing but at same time absolutely fucking amazing
The great thing about reaction videos is that you get people to open their minds to genres that they may not normally experience. And when that happens, it's amazing to see the realization of how complex and deep those other genres are. Like rap. A lot of people don't listen to what the message is, and may only pick up the vibe. Same with hard rock. When someone who normally may not listen to a genre really listens for the first time, you can see the admiration growing as they digest the words. And, in a way, watching a reaction video allows someone to re-experience what it was like when THEY first experienced that moment. It's like watching it for the first time all over again.
Aye guys great to see you react to Metallica, great old school band ;) I've been enjoying your channel, been watching some Bill Burr, Tom MacDonald, etc. You guys are awesome!
This song represents what humankind has accomplished with wars. Soldier after soldier with deep scars, soul and body. The scenes you watched are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun". So the soldier came back home without limbs cause of a mine. Couldn't speak, so basically no form of communication and trapped in his own mind, not knowing if he was awake or dreaming, just a constant torture. I see you reacted to Master of Puppets, gonna check this out now :D Anyway best wishes to you 2
There is ALOT of reaction videos out there now but I love yours because you embrace all genres of music & your attitude towards each other & life is really inspirational. Horns up 🤘 TPC-73
This song describes, both lyrically and musically, the torture and hell our soldiers go through after going to war. Most of them come home a different person than when they left. Whether it be physical, or mental, damage from the horrors of war. We, each and EVERYone, need to be extensively grateful for all of our military members. Be sure to show respect and gratitude to ALL of our military, soldiers and Coast Guard personnel! If it weren't for them, we would be living under extreme tyranny! THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR DEFENDERS!!! I AM TRULY GRATEFUL, AND I SALUTE YOU!💙
For many of their fans this was like a cheap blow because they said that they had been sold to be commercials, since in those days, it was the first band that made a video clip for a platform like MTV (80's), but that helped catapult Metallica into the giants of the metal industry of those times, putting them in the Top 100 of the greatest MusicVideos of all history worldwide ...Greetings from Chile🔥🔥
My favorite Metallica song! You guys are so awesome. You have such great energy and, at the risk of sounding shallow, you are a beautiful couple and I LOVE that you're always so well put together and your outfits always match.
Awesome reaction guys 👌 One of the many reasons why so many love Metallica are because of their deep meanings. Always make sure you have their lyrics up when listening to them 😉 Hope you guys really give them a good go, they’re worth it 🤘 Master of Puppets - with lyrics -1986 Nothing Else Matters - 1991 Harvester of Sorrow - Live Moscow ‘’91 Fade to Black - 1984 Battery - 1986 The Four Horsemen - 1983 All Nightmare Long - 2008 Spit out the Bone - 2016
It’s a song based on a book written and later made into a movie, by Dalton Trumbo “Johnny got his gun” a World War 1 novel about a traumatic casualty of a soldier who survived the war but lost his voice, his hearing, his sight, both arms and legs! He simply living on a machine and IV’s. He only has his thoughts with no one to talk to but himself. The song is based on a soldiers perspective, basically it can be about any war. This includes soldiers going through PTSD. When I was in Iraq war for my 4th time, I lost so many friends, I started to question why did I survive 7 combat tours?!? This song and Faded To Black helped me recover some on my PTSD issues then and now! When ever I feel really down and unsure about myself? I listen to both One & Faded to Black to help me some what understand my PTSD moments!! Thanks for your honest opinions not using political rhetoric like other channels but listening with your heart and opened mind!!! I thank you for your service to our Country!!! 🇺🇸
Love your reaction! The majority of Metallica's earlier songs have depth in meaning. "Sanitarium, (Welcome Home)" is probably the deepest in their catalog. I highly suggest a reaction to it. I promise you nothing short of a blown mind if you really focus on the lyrics. Peace, love, and good vibes y'all!
I go through at least 5 stages of grief everytime I hear this song. So I don't listen to it often. I'm not a big metallca fan but appreciate their music. Great work you two.
The footage is from an old movie called Johnny Got His Gun (1971), about a soldier during World War 1, who got blown up by a mortar shell. He lost his arms, legs, hearing, voice, and everything but his inner, torturous thoughts with no way to communicate or do anything about it. A literal 'basket case' and a living hell. He was asking, through Morse Code, that someone put him out of his misery. Sometimes death is better.
Now let me just tell you this was the most AMAZING SONG during the Big 4 at Yankee stadium. The place erupted like the Yankees won the World Series. Unforgettable.
The message I took from this video is this: 1) War is an old man's game. 2) War has horrific consequences. 3) Authority does not care about wounded soldiers. 4) This song is why I love Metallica.
The way to feel the emotion, is to understand that the pain/horror content of each song is taken into context as a 3rd party character. Now, thinking of it that way will mentally pull you out being terrified..Its not you in the video, now your going to be in the right mindframe, now when you get the emotion of immense sadness and despair at the end of the video, right as reach peak disbelief, then you swing that emotion into how lucky we all are to not have had to go through these people's circumstances, it should remind us all that we have blessings all around us. The Men and Woman who went into the Wars of history, If you think about it, so many lives lost to fight for us to be here, including the lives of the enemy, should give you a sense of the magnitude of how much heaven and earth it took for us to be so blessed today. Bless you both as well, you two together put on a hell of a show, Peace! LuV!🍦🍦Ice Cream!!
I thought the video froze at the end of the song...but no, yeah was in shock a little and left speechless for a few seconds. Lol. Y'all ain't the only ones.
The movie does have a few bright spots. The nurse opens the curtains, so he learns to count the days by the sun's warmth on his skin. He learns to tell when he's awake or asleep by whether he controls the images in his mind's eye or they control him. He learns to tell who is in the room by the number of footsteps and how heavy they are. In the end, though, the military officer draws the curtains after he thwarts the nurse, thereby destroying his most important connection to the outside world.
Lucky#7Like👍OK I see what it is just because yall Ravens not in it and yall know that it football on right now but yall are still uploading video's it's cool lol🤣I'm here tuning in showing my support and I will be watching until the end family😁
Hey fam! You know this got me from the beginning. Very very interesting. It was almost like watching a movie. I was like 👀 I declare I had the same look on my face.
I remember their show back in June 2017 in Denver. This was their third song in, they stopped the show for a passing lightning storm right above us, and had to take shelter. The rumbles in that stadium that night. Great show after the storm passed.
This was from a book called Johnny Got His Gun by guy named Dalton Trumbo. He was blacklisted in Hollywood in the 40s when Senator Joe McCarthy said that Communists were everywhere. He wrote the screen play for the movie Spartacus. This was Metallica's first video they made.
I was actually up watching the Headbanger's Ball on MTV for the world premier of this video! I think I still have it on VHS tucked away somewhere. it still gives me goosebumps.
The song is about a soldier who is trapped in his own mind after being blown up by a landmine. He has no arms, no legs, all of his senses were taken away and he's unable to speak. So he's only got his inner monologue left (hence the lyric "now the world has gone, im just one"). The doctors are keeping him alive, but he can't communicate to them that he actually just wants to die, and not live as a shell of his former self. It's a rather sad, and all too real, story. But perfectly highlights the brutal reality of war. And what it can do to innocent people.
This song was from the movie johnnies got a gun that was based on a book of the same name about a solder vwho lost his arms, legs, sight and voice but was kept alive by machines if you read the book have lots of keanex because it is a tear jerker.
I had to come peep out the magnificent couple. I see the dynamic duo is looking at Metallica. Yeeeah...that video freaked me out too. The dude laying there with no arm or legs. It’s like a scene outta hell-raiser. Just imagining being in that condition freaks me out. Aside from the story and visuals, the song is Awesome! I don’t rock with to much metal but THEM white boys trigger me and make me wanna do push ups or just be plain inspired to move! Salute to y’all and I pray that many blessings unfold for you all in 2021 and beyond.
Let’s please shout out to our military service folk and veterans, and our wounded warriors. Those guys who fought for something that they truly believed in and wanted.
Great masterpiece!!! Special and genuine style! I appreciate when people react to other genres when rock is not your first choice, i really appreciate your reactions to rage against the machine and Metallica... This song is called ONE because he lost limbs and senses cuz the war and rather die
This is based on a movie about WW I and it is about the horrors of war and what some soldiers through when they come home. You guys got the message quite well.
Hello you two! I truly hope that you and your Family and Friends are healthy and safe! Others who have commented have succinctly explained the; "Johnny Got His Gun", book and movie that Metallica brilliantly integrated into their video. Just wanted to give a shout out though to Metallica for winning the Grammy for this song in 1988!! They played this as it is in this production of the vid. It's just awesome to see harder Metal Bands appreciated for their obvious artistic talent and abilities. : ) Virtual Hugs!
This actually scenes from an antiwar movie called Johnny got his gun from the early 70s. Metallica bought the rights to the movie just for this video. I would highly recommend watching it.
One of my best friends was a Korean War vet. He always said most men were willing to die for their country, but not be maimed just short of death for a lifetime. He came back intact, but some of his buddy's fates haunted him to his last day.
I truly hope you get better very soon! 💜 I really think you'd like "Mana Said". It's a slower song about the lead singer's Mother. And it's with an acoustic guitar. It always gets me in my feels.💜💔💜
From an old book, Johnny Got His Gun, later turned into the movie used in tge video. Soldier lost his arms, legs, and face. Couldn't hear, speak, or see. Was using Morris code by hitting his head against the pillow. Someone finally recognized what he was saying..."Kill me."
That was awesome a reaction.... Great way to show the pain of a soldier... Until it's sleeps... Great song with video to show the pain of a drug addict... please react..new subscriber love from Florida 🌴
Vid was from a movie called Johnny got his gun, based on the book by Dalton Trumbo. He was blacklisted during the McCarthy witch hunt and later wrote the screenplay to Spartacus under a pseudonym.
The hospital scenes are from a 1971 movie Johnny Got His Gun (fiction inspired by a gruesome true story about a Canadian soldier from World War I. During battle, a mortar shell hits very close to "Johnny" Joe Bonham, causing severe physical damage.). It's definitely an anti-war song. TOTAL BANGER!!!!!!!!
Sometimes the greatest hell is being stuck in your own mind in a constant state of pain and there is no One that can help you or is stopped from helping you because it's not in their interest.
