I bought one from you a month and a half ago. It was a 15 inch tall stick with leaves. It's now 36 inches tall with 15 inch lateral branches! Thanks Allen.
I love how we all have a way of gardening that works for us. My way may be different than your way, Alan, or even Shamus' method (Hi, Shamus). If you find a method of gardening that works for YOU, then WINNER WINNER chicken dinner! I love that I can pick pieces from all of you guys to use in my methods. Proof is in the pudding. All our plants look great in our videos.
I truly have no special way to do anything that works just for me. All plants require water, if they don't get it, they die. Some plants need winter care, if they don't get it, they die. Honestly, I'm just trying to show how easy it really is to grow plants. This is probably why regardless of the approach you take, as long as the basic needs are met, plants will grow.
I planted this tree a couple months ago. It haven't grown much and doesn't look very happy but I hope it will survive. We had an unusually cold spring this year in California (zone 9b) and everything grows slower. Thank you for your info.
It is Aratiles in Philippines. That plant is prolific and can thrive in clay soils. The seeds are very small and once eaten by birds, the seeds will be carried anywhere. So during wet season you can find the seedlings anywhere!
Informative video as always! I love that you use a trenching shovel. That's what I use too. I'm looking forward to trying the fruit. I'm curious what your view is on wood chips. Will you be applying them to the surface of your new property?
@@qctropicals Definitely looking forward to that one. Gophers are one pest I have not had to deal with but I also don't have flood irrigation which I imagine makes it easier for those guys to dig in and make tunnels since the water penetrates deep
How do you prefer to propagate this tree by rooting cuttings or airlayering. I live in the Caribbean so its great weather for them. Mine bears loads of fruit but they don't go to maturity they drop off whilst they're still green & young. What would you suggest i do to encourage the fruit to stay on & ripen?
I think I got a couple from you back in the beginning of the summer>They are doing AWESOME>>>> I actually got one berry and I think it is ripening now>missed the flower but noticed the berry>>I brought them in last month and have a light and they sit on a heat mat>> Can you tell me how long it takes for a berry to ripen, and are the berries true to the mother?
I got to try my first fruit yesterday and it was not what I expected. I have the yellow form, not the red one and it tasted like buttered popcorn sprinkled with sugar. Have you ever had the yellow fruit? Is that what it's supposed to taste like? TIA
yes I've had yellow and red. Both taste the same. Keep in mind fruit taste will not be consistent especially when the plant is young. I suggest, try several at different times of the year to get the full experience.
@@qctropicals Thanks--glad to know the red and yellow taste the same! Definitely keeping the tree and will be trying more fruit. It's been growing like a weed and shading my other container plants.
Mine tasted like sweet buttered popcorn too! That was first fruit on the tree from a few months ago. I would take some to friends and family and tell them it tasted like Buttered Popcorn JellyBelly jelly beans. My husband found a ripe one the other day and said it was the best one he ever tried but couldn’t pinpoint the flavor. Now I’ll have to hunt for a ripe berry when I get home so I can see if the flavor is different now 😄
@@KHH595 i only found ONE photo of a yellow acerola cherry...a stock image for sale... other than that, i found nothing about yellow acerola cherry trees.i want one! does anyone sell them?
Since it grows so quickly and fruits on new growth, in a colder climate, could I possibly proppagate a branch at end of grow season and grow the proppagated piece inside and put outside in Spring and grow it instead of caring for a big container inside all winter? TIA
Hello Allen, like to see your videos and admire your knowledge on fruit trees. By chance now that you mentioned COTTON CANDY. Do happen to sell COTTON CANDY GRAPE VINES? I live in S. California. Thank you for your excellent advice.
That tree is out for me. Even if i created a microclimate i would need to work day and night to maintain. I need to be in a tropical area that looks like a beautiful tree.
Having the right information is key to make good decisions. If you didn't know the true requirements for this plant, you would buy it and not find out it wasn't a good fit for you until it was too late.
@@qctropicals, thank you! Since she grows so fast, it hits 10-12 feet before I realize it and then it is too tall for me to cover correctly. I lost a little on the top this past winter. I am going to take her down to about 7 feet so I can cover her well.
I got one going , bought it online , but i dont think they like being in a tiny soil plug ( at the nursery) , it almost died but is slowly rooting snd recovering, slightly disappointed overall with online plant sellers , i make sure the plant i sell are big and heslth with lots of roots , not tiny root plugs that most plant simply dont do well Sure some thinfs do fine in those plugs like figs or mulberry but not everything, jhsy dig up a plant and shove it in a box lol no need to keep the roots less than 1 inch big
If the tree has gotten fairly large and wide would I still need to cold protect? Bought one last fall but it was in the pot. Kept it outside except for the cold winter we got in 2022. Put it in ground in spring and it's exploded in growth. Wasn't sure how to cold protect it with the first time it being in ground outside. I saw your tips about a structure and heater. How many winters will I have to do that for?
Muntingia calabura, I've been through several of those, the first one is the only one that I've done any good with, it got to 6 or 7 feet before I accidentally over fertilized it and it killed it. How tall are your starters and are they the red variety? Thanks Alan
@@qctropicals I had been alternating back and forth every week or two between comfrey tea and 13-13-13 granular fertilizer and the last time I ran them too close together and it burned it up, I had it in about a 4 gallon nursery pot. I think this last one was from root rot I'm not sure.
I have several from seed,,I I have learned from trial and error>>they do not like water>when germinating seeds they need>>HIGH HUMIDITY>be patient sometimes they can take up to 6 months to spring out...But very very sensitive while small.Treat them like a passion fruit..or..a tropical house plant...THEY NEED HEAT more so than light but a grow light and heat mat is sufficient to keep the tree growing inside>>>>>heat is the crucial part once they reach 6 inch...I live in zone 6 and bring them in before temps reach below 50 degrees>>hope this encourages you
Why is there no growth on my 2 grapefruits and one Improved Meyer lemon. The one grapefruit produced 2 grape fruits and a sport of growth in the winter and the other one had tons of flowers and fruits lost them all. My new Meyer had over 90 lemons they are slowly falling off and turning yellow and the leaves they are still babies.
