In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a powerful and dynamic chess opening for Black against 1.e4. It is the Portuguese Gambit from the Scandinavian Defense, which arises after the following moves: 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.d4 Bg4.
The Portuguese Gambit is known for its aggressive nature and the potential to create unbalanced positions right from the start. Even grandmasters have lost against this gambit, which highlights its effectiveness as a surprise weapon. In fact, Magnus Carlsen himself has employed this gambit to defeat strong opponents like the Indian grandmaster Vaibhav Suri.
Learn how to unleash the full potential of the Portuguese Gambit and catch your opponents off guard with this dynamic opening!

After 3. Qf8+ black can play Kh7 but then 4. Qg7# Black can also refuse to accept the rook sacrifice and run with the king but it's still M10 and Black will lose the queen even if white doesn't find the forced checkmate.

Puzzle of the day: There's a mate in 1 threat of Qh2, so that immediately eliminates any move that isn't a check or something that blocks the threat. Rxf8+ is the only check. If the king doesn't take, Rxf7+ wins the queen, and there are probably other moves that lead to mating attacks. Assuming the king takes, Nf5+ threatens mate with the rook and knight. Black can delay with Qd6, but Qxd6+ keeps up the checks. The king can run to g8, but Qf8+ sacrifices the queen to draw the king back into the knight + rook mating net, finishing off with Rd8#. If the king decides to run to h7 instead, Qg7# finishes the deal.

Rxf8+: 1. If Kxf8 then Nf5+ and if Ke8 then Re1+ and the checkmate can't be stopped no matter where the king goes. 2. If Kg7 then Rxf7+ wins the Queen. 3. If Kh7 then Qd3+ forces the King back to g7 where Rxf7+ wins the Queen and the attack continues

Hey man, I love your videos. My entire opening repertoire is based off of your opening videos. However I don't yet have a good opening choice against 1. d4. I want to be able to play the same setup (preferably something aggressive) against the Queen's Gambit and against the London. Do you have any recommendations?
