June 2017 is a pretty nostalgia-heavy month for Playstation owners. There was a new Tekken, Crash Bandicoot is coming at in a few days and the Wipeout Omega Collection saw the return of an iconic Playstation exclusive, but is it any good?

It's almost like F-Zero! Except ya know, whoever made it clearly cares about the series they've made.
@LXIVGOLD
@LXIVGOLD 7 лет назад
Heimskr, Prophet of Talos Outside of the aesthetics they are nothing alike. F-Zero doesn't use projectiles your vehicle is your weapon and there's 30 racers per track vs 8, the controls are way tighter in F-Zero and gameplay is a lot faster. Not to mention the franchise actually has character where as with Wipeout it's just generic vehicles, generic tracks and music noting too special. This honestly compares more closely to Extreme G which is a more enjoyable franchise. F-Zero is top tier of futuristic racers the closest thing to it today is FAST Racing yet even that game is missing the magic.

"How many hours have you put into it? Not many actually". Well, there goes this review's credibility.
@kevbwell8996
@kevbwell8996 7 лет назад
If you put five hours in a five hour long game you didnt put alot of time in yet you have done the majority of what the game had to offer so mabye he didnt grind out 100 hours but when each game is under 10 hours to beat and very similar you dont have to put in that much time to make a fair evaluation of the games.
@B9scrambler

Not so true with Wipeout. It takes a long time to properly master these games. Once you've got the controls down and can race competitively at the higher speeds, that's when it comes into its own. Thankfully this video isn't a review and is more of an opinion piece.
@MarSprite
@MarSprite 7 лет назад
Yeah, after you dip in to 50+ zones even phantom speed(equivalent to zone 20) races seem slow boring and stupidly easy by comparison, the campaign never even suggests that you should attain those kind of results in its zone events. This game is all about mastering the intricacies of ship control. Your sharpest turns need to be executed flawlessly at ridiculous speeds utilizing precise amounts of airbrake and sideshift and steering at exactly the right moment, or you destroy your own ship by pingponging off the walls or by flying off the track entirely. Most likely the streamer felt the huge bump in difficulty from the increase in speed class. Once you reach speeds where a hit from a weapon can let the rest of the pack pass you(phantom, maybe rapier), it turns into a game of chance to make it through the pack. Sometimes they bombard you with hits and blow you up, other times they beat each other up and you make it all the way to the front without being attacked. Racebox zone! it's where it's at for chasing the skillcap in this game.

As long as they haven't been playing Wipeout 2097 they'll never get my attention. Actually the first Wipeout game is still one of the hardest. So, whoever complains about the new versions of Wipeout... grab your ps1, get rid of the dust, sit down tight and contemplate while having a "in-the-zone" rush at Talon's Reach in phantom mode without hitting any walls. If you made it, call me! :D

WipEout isn't too hard, if you're struggling you can use pilot assist, and when playing on HD / Fury you can set the skill to Novice. 2048 on the otherhand has got more trickier levels such as the A+ 10 lap races. This game is amazing.

The best thing about Wipeout is it allows you to run custom soundtracks and even adds a tunnel effect when going through tunnels and a low treble effect when catching air. In the zone game mode the tracks reacts to your music. I used to zone out and chill for hours shaving seconds off my record. I would suck a dick just have a Wipeout for PC

I heard they actually made novice difficulty level a bit easier in HD and Fury. 2048 on the other hand they made harder all the way through because dualshock 4 made controlling the craft far easier overall than those vita's tiny sticks and buttons. Anywho, I'm totally new to the genre, this collection is the very first AG-racing game in my life, and on novice I started to feel any challenge whatsoever only in the phantom events near the end. Then I adapted somewhat to the sheer speed of it and went through the HD career on Skilled. And it was pretty easy too. Then I attempted Elite AND THAT'S when I felt some real challenge being thrown my way. Some races I had to restart like 10 times, but I'm fine with it. IMO, only in the last 2-3 events on Elite difficulty went from challenging to full blown hardcore. But that's just me.
@digitaldeathsquid3448

Some other points I would add in regards to what was said about the WipEout series: With regards to difficulty, part of the battle is making sure you're familiar with the track layout. To that end, I'd recommend using Time Trial and Speed Lap to make sure you know precisely how to take every corner on every track. It does sound like a daunting prospect, but I'm a sucker for beating myself by a gnat's breadth. You can also use Zone Mode to this effect, and also to acclimatize yourself with the blinding speeds the series is known for (since Zone Mode is basically WipEout's take on the movie Speed - your craft auto-accelerates as you race around a track. The game ends when you blow yourself up). In terms of what's changed and progressed over the series, there are two changes in mechanic between the first batch of WipEout games (WipEout 1 to WipEout Fusion) and the second batch of WipEout games (WipEout Pure to Omega Collection). Firstly, the Pit Lane has been scrapped in favour of absorbing powerups to restore shield energy. Secondly, it's now possible to perform a barrel roll (even though it's technically an aileron roll) whenever your craft is launched into the air. Attempting one uses up 15 shield energy, but if successful, you receive a small speed boost upon landing. WipEout 2048 also forgoes giant differences between manufacturer differences for having 4 variant craft - Speed variants, which have generally good speed and acceleration but lacking in firepower and shields, Fighter variants, which have tough shields and powerful weapon systems but can't handle very well, Agility variants which have phenomenal handling but are generally very slow indeed, and Prototype variants, each based on one of the aforementioned variants but with a unique twist - such as the Feisar Prototype (Speed), which has a top speed that increases the more speed pads you hit and decreases every time you're hit with a weapon. With regards to repetitive content - this is a re-master of a re-master, effectively. Pretty much all the content from WipEout HD (and the HD Fury expansion pack) is taken from WipEout Pure and WipEout Pulse for the PSP (with I think one or two tracks here and there from Wip3out for the PS1), so some of the tracks have now appeared a total of 4 times in the series. And one final note about the Quake weapon - personally I wouldn't compare it to the Blue Shell, since that only targets the leader - it's a disruption-type weapon that affects a lot of people in range, so I'd say a Mario Kart weapon that provides a more apt comparison, in my view, is the Pow Block or Lightning Bolt

The types of weapons you get are determined by where you are in relation to the pack. If you are way out in front, you will get more mines and bombs. If you're at the back or very far behind, you are more likely to get quakes and plasmas. You can get any weapon at any position, but the effect is noticeable.

does this have the repulsive sides like in 2097, for me that was one of its amazing features of the early game. if you pulled up HARD on some corners you could save your self but you lost some time. a good trade off. the issues i had with the wipeout i played briefly on the PS2 i think didn't have that and It felt clunky and not really like I was floating on magnets

The term you are looking for is "native 4k" (or "native 4k resolution" if you want to be more accurate). It means that the game is rendering directly at 3840x2160 pixels (rather than, for instance, rendering to a 1440p buffer and then upscaling for the 4k display).
@MauroSanna

I picked this game up immediately! I used to be third in the world score back in the PS2 days and I have been playing WipeOut since the PS1 release. This game requires three fundamental things to master: 1) Memorize the tracks until you don't even have to think when and how to turn. It has to become second nature. 2) Memorize the speed up pods position until you are so sure that you can even anticipate where to go before they are in view. 3) Learn how to be tactical in your weapons choice and usage. If you don't do that, which makes the game a little repetitive by the way (Hey! It's a racer, what did you expect? :D ), you will have hard times. Fun times but hard! ;-)

Takes a bit of practice to learn how to handle the turns, but once you've got it, it's tons of fun! Oh also, they kind of did the cohesive package thing on Vita as well, HD and Fury DLC merging nicely into the game menus. Also, the graphics programmer in me is triggered by the "checkerboarding is a cheap trick" thing as if it's a bad thing. It's actually remarkably good at replicating the actual 4k image, also, pretty much all of what you see in a game is a "cheap trick", very little is actually accurate.

Only games on PC that 4K seems to make a difference to me are the ones that come with special HD DLC, or seem to have them built in like Witcher 3. All the others when I run in 4K they seem to be just some sort of up-scaling because I see no difference in them between 1080p and 4K on my 43" screen that I use on my PC. I also play on PS4 Pro, hooked up to same screen as my PC, and a few of it's 4K games make a difference where the rest can't tell a difference much like I feel on the games on PC. This is from my first hand experience anyways with both systems. Either way the difference really isn't worth the extra $400 I spent on PS4 Pro or the extra $500 I spent on upgrading my PC hardware.

The real problem with this game is that if you didn't preorder the digital edition or get it from Game in the UK you won't be getting the exclusive Van Über ship. I imported the UK edition to North America because of the price and exclusive slipcase. The North American edition includes the Van Über ship no matter which edition you buy. Wipeout 2097 was so fast that it could only be played with energy drink reflex enhancement plus the gliders had air brakes to smoooth scratch around the curves instead of rapidly being braked down whenever they slightly touch a wall. It was just pure perfection no other Wipeout could achieve. No longer being able to scratch along the walls was what I hated on all newer Wipeouts, no more air brakes to smoooooothly scratch along the walls in sharp turns (there was air brakes but they worked somehow different). But Omega will surely be a superb game and I will buy it for VR. Psygnosis should also release G-Police on the PS Pro.

All wipeout events are quite easy on the hardest difficulty. all you have to do is practise the stage without enemies and after like 15-30min after you hit every speed pad and don't hit any walls, go to the event and you can beat it after a couple of tries..

The HD/Fury part of the game is fine, you can set AI difficulty yourself and it's quite fair. The 2048 part does have a ridiculous spike between A class and A+ class races where the AI is just much better. It shouldn't stop you from clearing the three 2048 campaigns though, but some of the special races are quite hard. Other than that, this is crazy value for the 40 EUR I paid for it, having a lot of fun.

I'm absolutely not a console gamer, last Wipeout i played was Wipeout 64 about like 17 years ago i guess, so glad this franchise survived and younger generation played it.

The person playing in the video is really bad. He misses all the speed arrows, doesn´t use the aerobrakes or the double-break. Tbh if you can´t play well you may as well not bother doing a review. It´s hard but at the same time it´s well-balanced and rewarding. Nobody forces you to play in hiigher difficulties. Even though you play the same 35 tracks (?) over and over thay are totally different depending on the speed you are playing on. So your review is also flawed there. I played wipeout hd back in the ps3 for more than 30 hours, and there are two more games apart from this one, so you think that 50 hours is not enough for a game at discounted price???

PS4 pro does not run at 4k. It has a Nasty little trick called anti aliasing or whatever it's called. This makes it so the edges of objects and scenes look sharper.

Knee-oh Ni sounds like ne in japanese. The concept of the title is that it is based on a movie script (vaguely now) that was never finished by a famous japanese film maker and the script was for a movie called Oni. O-ni flipped around = Ni-o, ie Ni-oh/Nioh

This series has stayed good because they found a formula early on that worked. The fact that it got hard so fast was a welcome change and just a little bit of practice makes those later stages with higher speeds so much more rewarding and fun. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. Nowadays I dont play games because how much these new supposed features and gameplay elements change the original game. With Wipeout being a straight remaster its a breath of fresh air, for me at least, to know what I liked and enjoyed is still there.

Redout has the exact same problem. Very similar style of game. Get half way through the campaign and then bam the difficulty skyrockets

For those who don't know, the guys behind this series (since Studio Liverpool was dropped by Sony) have been working hard on an independent game called Formula Fusion, which as far as I can tell is the same thing. The art design in all games so far, I believe, is headed by The Designer's Republic.

I played and beat all 3 of these games when they first came out on each system and I love them to death but yeah, the later races suffer from major difficulty spikes. If you want to place decently let alone first you gotta play damn near flawlessly in the later races, one fuck up and you might as well quit and try again. Wich would be fine if the difficulty curve was more gradual rather than the sudden jumps it has.

IMO Wipeout 2048 is completely different to Wipeout HD/Fury. They're 2 seperate games you'll have to master in the collection. Also the latter half of the difficulty is proper Wipeout! it's difficult! but manageable. The speed gets capped at Phantom/A+ races which is relatively slow if you spend your time mastering Zone races.

I played 2048 back on PS1 to the point where I had memorised every track, although tricky it was achievable, but have to admit when Wipeout 3 came out the challenge was substantial, bordering on punishing. A great series however

I can understand why the difficulty would be a complaint. As someone's who's played the original, 2097, Wip3out, and HD/Fury, the WipEout games are difficult. They are easy in regards to understanding basic mechanics, or at least one can come to grips with them and understand some basic things. But beyond that, one needs to learn various ins and outs less they be punished heavily. HD/Fury in particular with it's later end single player campagins are to put it mildly; brutal. You need to bring your S+++ Rank game unless you get your guts handed back to you. It is a fun and frustrating game. But I love it. I simply wish I had more time for it among others. I also wish Sony had put 2048 on the PS3 and maybe Studio Liverpool would still be around but then again it's the 'AAA' industry, and Studio Liverpool did the best they could under Sony's feet. I'm still not over their closing, or Evolution Studios, among others.

You have to unlock the better ships or else you'll never beat the game. I played every wipeout on the ps, ps2 and ps3 and there's a definite pattern to these games. You never get to hold 1st place until the last lap, meaning you have to pass 3 or 4 ships each lap. Then you kinda have to grind out 1st for all the lower events to unlock the better ships. Once you get those you can move up in the difficulty. Eventually it's all pretty easy.

I agree with the difficutly but that shouldn't put you off from playing the game. It is very accessible and a lot of fun. Just play it on a difficulty that suits you. Also, customize the soundtrack and just play "Juno Reactor". That is the theme that plays in the highway chase scene in Matrix Reloaded. Best matching soundtrack ever. And you can listen to it for hours with this game. ;)
