A little bit about Journey to the West. It is one of the 4 classics in Chinese Literature. Basically there was a monk in the olden days that travelled to India in order to learn more about Buddhism. Journey to the West was written a couple hundred years later and is loosely based on that story. Along the way the way the monk find some companions, namely the monkey king, who rides a cloud, has a stick and magical powers. Another character is a guy that was turned into a Pig. The book itself is mostly written as a takedown of the contemporary situation in China. There are a lot of jokes in there that take down feudal lords, corrupt tao priests and also shows evil warlords and such in a bad light. It's kind of ment as satire on the society at that time. For any Chinese, or even Asian, gamers all the name places, characters and enemies encountered in this game would be more than familiar and just the mention of the place name on the map will them everything to them about what would happen in that level. The dragon is turned into a horse and is added to the monks convoy after they solved the quest in the mountains, is basically like saying spiderman got bit by a spider,.. well yeah.. duhh. hahah Anyway, the book has been made and remade into TV shows, movies , children's Cartoons over the years. Actually if a guy with a monkey's tail riding a cloud sounds familiar to anyone it is because Dragonball Z is loosely based on Journey to the West. As with any old ass book, the original source material is a real pain to read, but I would definitely recommend a quick hop over to the wiki page, if only to impress your Chinese friends. Further more the recently released movies, I think its a trilogy, I saw only one of them, seem to be pretty watchable. Since the characters are all traditional characters, I would guess that this was for sure intended for the Hong Kong and Taiwanese Market, so maybe if you are looking for copies of this, that's where they should be. But since they were never really all that successful I am guessing that a lot of that stuff was probably recycled a long time ago and now this game has become super rare. but that would just be a guess. Maybe somewhere in Taipei some guy is sitting on a box of new old stock and he is just releasing them to ebay every couple years or so. hahah
The Jackie chan/jet Lee movie the forbidden Kingdom is loosely connected to the journey to the west stories as well as its set after the journey that monkey took and has the character in the movie...... Its also a very excellent movie and reminds me somewhat of no retreat no surrender
Am I the only one here who remembers Monkey the Tv show I grow up with it. I'm disappointed with the youth of today. And its Sun Wu Kong equal of heaven! And its not a compliant rod its the as you will cadgel because it bends to your will, bad translation. And he is a elemental monkey born of stone on tne mountain of flowers and fruit at the dawn of time from a stone egg, not a normal monkey a demon king who embarked onnthe road to enlightenment.
@@TheRetroFuture journey to the West is a famous Chinese folktale. There's also another game (very loosely) based on it called "Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" on the PS3 and Xbox 360. You should check it out, it's pretty good
@@TheRetroFuture He's incredibly popular over here in Asia. They've got anime as well as live action series. If you fancy Kung Fu, checkout the only movie Jackie Chan and Jet li ever did together- Forbidden Kingdom. It's fantastic solely for the fact that they're in it together lol
@@bitchassmcgee9708 There's a new game based off it called black myth wukong that's gonna be on next gen. Release date TBD but the trailer looks awesome.
yea thats right haha ! people cant like THIS game ! its not even a gaaame ! wtf how can you still like this riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight ? (my head moves closer to yours while my body remains stationairy photoshop.jpg)
I have a fair share with Google Assistance. It stop in the middle of the video, pop up and asked how can I help you. Super annoying and I can't disable it.
Like, on Android devices, Google (everything) is the first thing that I disable (uninstall, remove, block, firewall) right after I take it out of the box. Then I'll side-load the F-Droid store and go from there. Wouldn't get an Apple product if this wasn't doable, not that I'd ever give them $1. *only if (factory installed) apps can't be removed - they can be "adb" hidden for current user, or firewalled from the Internet (and data!) by using something like NetGuard (as the built-in Android 10 firewall is pretty crummy and it allows apps to exclude themselves, which really defeats the whole purpose - if any exceptions are ever allowed without user interaction)
I've just stumbled across this video after being introduced to your channel and man my heart has been racing for the last hour. I owned the Magnum Supervision and Journey To The West many years ago. I got it in the United Arab Emirates back in the 90s when my mum didn't want to spend too much money on getting a Gameboy. I vaguely remember playing a game with the splash screen containing "XUG" and a little monkey with a stick. I also remember playing Galaxy Fighter which looks like a Supervision game also (now that I know what the hell this console is called). Here's the kicker, I don't own the console or the games anymore! I'm pretty sure the console was thrown away with the games or my parents donated them to extended family in Iraq lol. The fact I could have been sitting on £15,000 has been stressing me out haha Thank you for the video but I also hate you for making this as I'd have preferred to live in ignorance. I'm hoping I brought some knockoff version of the Supervision Magnum but slowly realising that I probably had the real thing which I only owned because we didn't have enough money for a Gameboy so was discarded pretty quickly once I got better consoles.
I love it when Elliot gets super excited over Super Vision or Mega Duck stuff. He ends up showing more gameplay in this video than all the Game Boy gameplay in all his other videos combined!
The most underrated moment is how he shows the chore of rubbing the glue-gum out with a cottonstick, like there's no perfect way to go about it, you gotta just go in and do it lol.
I have the soccer one I think I overflow the points counter when I was a child. In the begining was frustrating because I ask to santa claus to bring me the game boy but instead he bring me the game child.... :(
Just to let you know Elliot, I think that not knowing about screws is a pretty common mistake. I almost broke my DS Lite when I was reshelling it because I didn’t know about the screws under the screw cover things on the top screen part
Another version of one of the most retold stories ever (see also Dragonball Z, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Monkey, Saiyuki on the PS1, and many more)
The funny thing about the rarest of something is that you can never find it, because all the things people don't care about are still rarer lol. Basically rarity comes down to the most obscure thing that someone somewhere actually still is looking for. Value has to be an inherent part of the definition of rarity, otherwise the most rare things ever would all be grains of dirt lol. I kind of doubt any copy of that game will ever sell for 16k
The Crystball cart is exactly the same as a Game Master cart and yes I obviously had one when they where released. I still remember the blocks music which was of course Tetris, think it was blocks.
It’s funny because after watching this video I can legit confirm y’all are the first with a high quality upload of this game in some form minus the early levels one...it’s crazy imagine how many people who had this game just chucked it...fast forward to now it’s super rare...the thrift shop hunting begins
Just a little intel for you! Three were the creatures who accompanied the Buddhist monk to the west. Sun Wukong the stone monkey born under the mountain and that challenged the jade emperor authority, Cho Gono, a pig looking humanoid creature that tried to lure a woman, and Sha Gojo which is a water demon (or kappa)... I'm using the Japanese translation names, btw... Them three accompany the Sanzo (or Buddhist monk) on the journey, so that's why you switched character! Anyway, the first series of Dragonball is based off this (where Bulma is the priest, Goku is Wukong, Yamcha is Gojo and Oolong is Gono)... Another animated series called Saiyuki is based off this myth! And there are SEVERAL more quotes and references about it in many medias, just like Fate, or RWBY
Best way I found to remove labels, at least the way I do, is to use a hair dryer or put it in front of a space heater for a few seconds, after a bit, the glue should loosen and it will just peel off
The music is awesome. Edit: Also it's hilarious how he is not familiar with JTTW at all lol. There's so many games based off it, it's one of the most influential pieces of art ever made. Sometimes directly, indirectly, blatantly and otherwise. Plus it's cool it has Buddhist motifs in it. Great vid!
If only you could convert Supervision games to work on Game Boy. I'd love to put the full Super Vision rom set on a Game Boy flash cart. I always like the idea of Game Boy knockoffs/clones, but I don't wanna deal with emulating the games and stuff. I'd much rather have 'em ported to an actual Game Boy.
I saw someone else put some info about Journey to the West below, but as an extra bonus (sorry if I'm repeating anyone) check out an old TV show called Monkey Magic also based around those same stories I believe. OOh just seen there is a new series based on this as well =)
That -semi- ugly-looking case can make us appreciate -even more- the process Nintendo could've gone through to create the original GameBoy casing, buttons and layout (and spacing). :)
Question: Did Nintendo have some sort of patent on the cartridge actually protecting the pins? These GameBoy clones seem like they always leave the pins exposed, and given that plastic is fairly cheap, it seems like they would have used a more forward-thinking cartridge design.
"I'm sure you may or may not have heard of" - this man speaks with confidence :) Didn't know there was a properly sold practical flashcart out for supervision now. Nice. I bought a Quickshot Supervision a couple of years ago on ebay but returned it because the battery contacts were all corroded and I couldn't be bothered. It makes the Jag look like a good deal. Didn't know enough people cared about them for this to happen. Wouldn't call it cool, but itneresting maybe (Journey to the west being sold by some guy). Magnum supervision looks cool though. Mega Duck is cooler than supervision overall imo. People charge too much for even normal supervisions considering what they are.
This is a very cool video. It's hard to find the gameboy style Watara Supervison for a decent price on eBay. They are usually at least $200. I may have to eventually settle for the extra large bendy model.
i never really liked the original gameboy idk the appearance never tickled my fancy but THIS oh boy does this interest me from the second i saw it i wanted to buy one
omg i had a handheld that played those carts and i had that crystalball game but my handheld looked like a grey game gear, does anybody know what hand held i had??
