Wikipedia tells me that Acer, which owns Gateway, licensed the same Chinese company that did the EVOO laptops for Walmart to use the Gateway brand as of last year. If I recall, previous reviews of EVOO products were done on this channel with positive results. It seems to me that much like Xiaomi, this company has found ways to undercut competition a bit while still producing a pretty good product. I’m pretty tempted to buy one myself.
I once changed your oil at least 3 years ago. I was subscribed to you and you asked me if I heard of your channel. I did but acted like I didn't because I was shy. Completely polite person . Believe or not that moment inspired me that the little guy can do big thing's if he has heart. I wanted to thank you for that. Sounds lame but I took the advice you gave. I really appreciate it
The brand was licensed to a Chinese company to make Walmart exclusive laptops..... So it's not the same Gateway that AOL drove into the ground pre-2007.
@@Daemon1995_ Yes your talking about laptops on eBay and I’m doing the same saying that the Ryzen 5 5500u cpu is what you should get in a laptop then this because it’s around the same price and is even better!
@@rabbidspecter4830 what? Bro i can play fortnite 60fps stable, rocket league! Even 2k21!!! You just gotta play with the settings... Obviously it's not a gaming laptop, some games run better in 720 but high settings but you'll be able to play smooth and great quality.
Thank you for reviewing this laptop. I had a 2014 Dell Haswell laptop that just fried itself and stopped working and I was short on cash and needed a laptop in a hurry to render some video for a school project. This laptop fit the bill for running Adobe Premier Elements 2019 for rendering 1080p video for posting to Facebook live. It was slightly slow at first but uping the tdp to 30 watts really helped.
@@blerimdesku7228 I agree with the video - the only small issue I have found is I do have some backlight bleed when the monitor is displaying all black. Not terrible but worth noting.
Correct, Acer is now the parent company however Acer isn't the one manufacturing these laptops. Most of the laptops coming from the Gateway brand are made by Shenzhen Bmorn Technology. They just happen to be the same company doing Walmart's EVOO brand.
I would rather pay the extra for an actual gaming PC with a dedicated GPU. You can pick up a gtx 1050 ti or even better a gtx 1650 pre built for not much more than this. And you end up with a rig that can do anything in 1080p
@@ReptilianRichardRamirez I have an Asus ROG Strix G512 with a GTX 1650 Ti, that cost me around $1200 when I got it. I don't think you could find something for much lower than $800 with a GTX 1650 in it. Edit: Unless you're talking about Pre-owned, then sure.
@@Axel_Ponce_ Yeah, Gateway is one of those exceptions. They make suuuuuper value friendly gaming laptops. I wouldn't get one (Build quality and other budget cuts) but they are inarguably great value if that kind of stuff doesn't bother you
Just got this laptop and it's perfect for general use like doing work stuff. If you need a laptop to work. IE sending emails ect ect, this is what you want.
Mine JUST died. It rebooted and now it does not find the SSD, so it will not boot. Other than that it rebooted a few times through out the day but I was used to that. We'll see how their tech support is, but I'm not holding my breathe :/
I read ALL of the reviews on this on walmart. Its not easy, as each item in each color and new or refurbished all have separate reviews. But I kept seeing the same things. - Non existent customer support. Folks are calling them with questions, and either getting nobody or an unhelpful answer. That'll get a ton of returns when a buyer gets frustrated. - Mine came with secure boot turned off in the bios. It was a refurb, so someone may have done this that owned it before me? Turning it on was simple and didn't require much. If I hadn't done that first, the machine wouldn't have met the windows 11 minimum requirements, which would turn into a support call for many non technical users. See problem number 1. - Bad noname ssd failing. Many of the poor reviews seem to all have experienced a drive failure. Booting into the bios and not loading windows was a common one. Some folks say they replaced the internal drive after it went out, and it went out again. That makes me wonder if there's a heat problem around the drive and how it's cooled? This might also explain why they went sata and not nvme. sata drives run a lot cooler, due to the lower speeds. From what I've gathered, this noname sata drive was cranked out in some Chinese factory just for gateway laptops. So the problems appear to be nonexistent customer service, some questionable bios settings, and disk failures. Add to that that the touchpad kinda sucks. Its loud and makes a lot of crunching sounds if you press on it.
@@alphawoolf5981 I just commented that a lot of poor reviews boil down to failure of the sata drive (just like yours), and "nonexistent customer service". You might consider returning it and getting another one. These go in and out of stock daily. Might be easier than dealing with tech support or trying to get warranty repair. My guess is the warranty repair folks aren't using new drives as replacements. Some drive pulled out of a machine that had other problems.
Been watching this computer for about a month now. The green color I wanted was sitting at $379 (brand new) but hasn't budged. Checked this morning and it dropped to $329! Bought it right away paying just under $350 with taxes and shipping. I only need a Windows machine for a few small things, and for the price this thing seems hard as heck to beat!
Thanks you saved me, I was on walmart's website and was about to buy basically this same laptop but a 10th gen for the same price, then seen your video did a new search and picked up this instead. Thanks again!
Gateway only exists in name. From Wikipedia: On October 16, 2007, Acer completed its acquisition of Gateway. In September 2020, Acer granted Gateway branding and licensing rights to Bmorn Technology, a Shenzhen based technology company to manufacture and sell Gateway branded laptops and tablets via Walmart where these devices are not designed, produced, or manufactured by Acer. Instead it’s re-badging their existing EVOO branded laptops. Fun Fact: In 2004 Gateway was a leader in Plasma televisions but after acquiring eMachines (a mistake that bankrupted them) they dropped their high-end electronics in a race to the bottom in PC's searching for profitability. Obviously...that did not work.
After I set the TDP to 30, I was unable to even boot into the BIOS. I had to disconnect the battery and reset the bios that way. Doing further research, it appears that the max TDP for my chip was 28W. So I set a Power Limit One of 20000(20.0W), which is the sustained power and then set Power Limit 2 to to be 27500 (27.5W) out of caution.
jelly that it has full unlocked BIOS unlike major OEM. at that price it's a sweet deal for any light usecase and that onboard ram amount should be enough. this is what quad core tigerlake should be priced for budget segment
Gateway was purchased by Acer. Most of the laptops coming from the Gateway brand are made by Shenzhen Bmorn Technology, the same company that does the EVOO laptops. Just a note to naive viewers, this doesn't mean EVOO laptops are the exact same as Gateway configurations, even in devices with the same specs expect to see different preloaded software and BIOS configurations.
Waiting for one of these to arrive for my wife. She wanted something under $300 and and the current price of $279 I felt like this is a tremendous value. Glad I checked the video as we'll definitely be turning up the TDP since it's plugged in 99% of the time.
@@jamespradel7918 that's not possible, the gpu runs on PCIe interface so M.2. sata only interface won't work, but M.2 NVMe will probably maybe though with a extra PSU and a M.2 nvme to pcie adapter
I bought one refurbished a few weeks ago (GWTN141-10BK) Did some testing and here are the findings: ✅HDMI 2.0: It is HDMI 2.0, it can output 4K@60Hz ❌NVME: NO, NEITHER m.2 ports recognize my Crucial P5 NVME drive, within BIOS NVME Settings, it says there's no NVME Device, have also tried booting into a live linux distro to try to detect NVME without success. So be very skeptical about the NVME support. There's also posts on forum from people running into the same issue. ❓Under the hood: The ETA Prime tear down mostly matches mine, except mine appeared to have TWO heat pipes connecting the CPU and Exhaust fan. Strangely, a black insulating tab covered exactly have the fan intake vent on the back cover and it seems to be an attempt for manufacture to intentionally throttle the CPU, so not sure if manufacture did anything to the BIOS to disable the NVME. So there are possibly some differences to each unit, keep that in mind before you buy. But it still worth the $319 price refurbished.
There is apparently a dedicated NVME something in the laptop that has the recovery image for Windows 10. But, yeah, no, neither of the immediately accessible slots are NVME capable.
@@thefranceboys2161 of course. Almost all tech now are being made in China and are just being rebranded by many companies. It's ok as long as the product is good.
@@rinkyouma2320 Sometimes Walmart gets some Tongfang OEM laptops and those are really good ones. The Walmart Motile was a Tongfang and it was very good (except that it only had 1 ram slot). I think there are also other Walmart gaming laptops that are tongfang but i am not sure of which models are.
I bought this laptop brand new when it came out. It was surprisingly good minus the keyboard feel, trackpad, and webcam. Apart from that it has similar specs to premium laptops, my mother had a Samsung laptop with the same cpu but only 8gb of RAM and she paid 1000$ for it. 3 years later i installed Ubuntu with a custom theme and this computer FLIES with the latest Ubuntu linux operating system. Unfortunately there are no good upgrades for RAM but with 16gb it’s an awesome laptop even if you want to use it for light video editing it is very good.
Absolutely would like to see the egpu on the back slot. If that works that might make this the ideal laptop for an egpu docking setup because it's so easy to just pop that back slot off.
If that M.2 slot doesnt support an NVMe drive it likely wont support an external GPU either, there is a chance, but more than likely it is only meant for SATA using the M.2 form factor
I just got ahold of one of these machines yesterday. From what I can see you are correct. NVME is not being recognized in the BIOS at all. It does have a setting in the BIOS for NVME but says that there is no Drive listed in there. Even when there are drives. I am going to keep testing though
@@Infinite_Curiosity unfortunately no. I did hear from gateway support and they literally told me that it is not supported at all. I ended up returning to Walmart
a nice and reasonably priced laptop, good for all common uses i have! Im a bit envious of you guys having such nice options to buy! and youre sounding better man. take care and stay healthy.
Bruh on my gateway my ram is 4 and my fps is trash can't even play Fortnite I can't even open the Fortnite menu when it shows creative and everything my storage is like 52gb and I only had 32gb and it is brand new and it came from Walmart and it cost like 300$ this sucks hard drive
So I can confirm for anybody interested in this laptop that the Type C port is fully functional with the ability to charge and drive external displays! Some thunderbolt docks don't work though so I suspect it might not be a thunderbolt port. Other docks work great though and I even got some older games like GTA 4, Sonic Team Racing, and some 2d fighting games to work on this thing without changing the TDP. If you are patient this laptop comes on sale for 279 several times throughout the year and it is unbeatable at that price!
not sure if they made changes to newer revisions of the bios or what, but I got similar scores as you on the "stock" settings of 0 in the Power Limit values. I hard coded to 28000 and so no difference. Also, the max TDP for this chip is 28watts, so not sure what the long term affect of running at 30watts might be.. very happy with the laptop nonetheless. Stink that both m.2 slot are SATA only with no NVME support.
I heard that the primary m.2 slot is able to accept NVME drive but I can't confirm it yet. I saw some settings in the BIOS for NVME settings so hopefully at least the main m.2 slot can use NVME!
I hope you do a Emulation Test cause if this laptop is greater than the Gold Pentium or i3 10th Gen then this is a beast laptop to able run so pls make a emulation test video before I buy a laptop.
Yes, it's a great laptop until the screen falls out of the casing which happened to me and apparently is a common problem. Then try reaching their warranty service ...
@@jamesbeach2067 me too. walmart online. sposd to get it tomorrow. last 2 laptops / notebooks I got (a Toshiba Satellite floor model from HH Gregg in 2011 & an HP Notebook in 2017) were very slow from the start. Looking for something fairly cheap. I do use mac just need a windows machine to do some firmware update on some of my stuff and only can be done with windows.
I got a 15.6" version about the time this video was uploaded and here two years later I am having an issue with the computer. Figuring that the warranty was long past I contacted their support department to ask a couple of technical questions so I could fix it myself. They emailed me a shipping label to return it for warranty repair or replacement. Update: I just got an Email from Gateway that they repaired my computer and have shipped it back and provided the tracking number.
Pretty sweet laptop for the price and some say that it supports USB C charging. Unfortunately it doesn't come with wifi6 and I can't tell from the video if the wifi card is easy to replace.
Gateway 14.1" 2-in-1 Elite Notebook, FHD, Intel Core i7-1165G7 8GB and 256GB C: Drive is a really good deal. It's got almost no storage for serious work or play, but the i7 1165G7 is very fast and has nicely updated iGPU for work or light gaming...
I just got this Gateway a few days ago and I love it. Just want to know if I can use the fingerprint program on it because I tried and it wouldn't setup.
Ohh please do an m.2 GPU test! Picked one up from wally world yesterday. One gripe would be a moderately high amount of screen edge backlight bleeding, which I verified to be an issue with 2 different units. Also, tip for anyone messing messing with this bios, be careful around the overclock settings. I entered a mild 50mhz in the GPU overclock setting which caused it to fail posting with no display at all. Not sure if that value is added to the core or if I underclocked the hell out of it. Maybe I'll play with the settings more this week, but to reset it I had to take the bottom off and disconnect the battery. Pleasantly surprised how simple the laptop is to take apart and repair however. Would love to see some overclocking success from your channel ETA. Keep up the fantastic work!
Pretty tempted by this thing just because it comes in green haha. I have an M1 MacBook Pro for my daily, am on the waiting list for a Steam Deck for gaming...and now I'm thinking of picking up a Windows laptop. I've thought about going all in and getting something really nice...but the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning on just picking something super cheap up.
I own an old Gateway laptop, it is 2nd or 3rd gen core i3.. The laptop still looks cool model no is NV57H13u and it came with HD screen which makes a lot easier to watch a clear screen
Man as far as specs go this is a decent pickup. The 11th gen core i5 and 16gb ram is great. The 512gb storage is just a plus. 1080p is fine for a screen this size. Wish it had nvidia graphics but it would cost a lot more if it did. Could probs get csgo going alright with iris.
If it had nvidia graphics it would prob be around 700 to 800 dollars which wouldn’t be a good buy for the price but csgo should run easily on this since it’s cpu intensive
Not sure if you knew, but ACER bought up Gateway. After the merger Acer was still doing "Gateway" as their lower end stuff. Possible they are doing the same thing now.
My Acer C720 uses the same sort of plug and same with another acer chromebook. Never had a plug break off. But since this charges fine through usb-c with a 65+ watt pd brick, it's a non issue.
That's some great performance. I know Michael MJD reviewed the Celeron version it was pretty bad. Also, Michael MJD's video basically said that it's not Gateway who's making these, apparently it's a company in china who's rebadging EVOO branded laptops as Gateway laptops. Honestly it doesen't matter tho as the performance is great
