I made a video a little while back on Yaroslav Askarov, the Nashville Predators 2020 1st round draft pick and highest drafted Russian goalie in NHL history. In that video, after winning the shootout, he proceeded to bench press the net in one of the best goalie cellys I’ve seen. This dude is an absolute character!
In last nights Marlies Admirals game that went to a shootout, we got another example of how exciting this guys is. Logan Shaw for the Marlies came flying down and Askarov with the flying poke check saw Shaw go hard into the boards. I cover this one in todays hockey video!

aggressive goalies were phased out with the behind the net triangle and limited puck playing ability. Its all in the league's attempts to sell more tickets with more scoring by clipping the wings of aggressive goalies that can more effectively take over a play.

Askarov is awesome and we're enjoying having him here in MKE (got to meet him last month). Sometimes he's a little too aggressive, handling the puck a bit much away from the goal, but this was an effective move in the shootout. I like that you said it's the shooter that dictates the pace.

As a goalie, the key to stop a break is to get back flow, then when ur a stick length away from the player you Math their speed and be patient. In this case, it would’ve been almost impossible to match that speed backwards, so it was the right play.

Goalies need to be able to make a play like that, because it is a totally logical way to handle that situation. Players just don't expect it because it's so rare, but if goalies challenge that aggressively more often, they'll be a little more ready to get hit. I mean, as long as there's a clear attempt to knock the puck away first, we should just look at that as a hockey collision.

I'm fairly certain the NHL rule on tripping changed a few years ago. No longer is a defender allowed to trip a player if he makes contact with the puck first. That was nonsense. It allowed a desperate defender with only a last ditched option of sprawling and reaching his stick out to trip in what was most often a scoring chance. Not sure if the AHL has the same rules or if even applies to goalies but it should.
@ghost_615
@ghost_615 Год назад
Well, considering this was a shootout, technically, the play is over once Askarov makes contact with the puck and moves it away from the goal. The "trip" happens after that...ie. when the play is already dead.
@alan2112drums
@alan2112drums Год назад
@@ghost_615 I'm not sure that's correct; what if he makes contact with the puck, it deflects up in the air, lands on its edge, rolls away from the net at first but in a circular direction and now on a path to the goal line. I wonder if, in fact, the play ends when he makes contact with the puck and it moves away from the net. Perhaps the play is allowed to carry on till the puck stops moving? Anyone have the current NHLrule book?
@theonlyraid8372
@theonlyraid8372 Год назад
@@alan2112drums The puck stopped moving forward when askarov pokechecked it. That ends the shot attempt
@alan2112drums
@alan2112drums Год назад
@@theonlyraid8372 That is incorrect; the play ends when the puck stops moving (or goes in the net. Technically, the puck must always move towards the net but "forward" movement might be implied, but not strictly enforced. If you think about the Datsyukian move, the puck actually moves backward for a brief moment (dribbling the puck) just prior to the shot being released. Furthermore, just because the goalie changed the forward movement of the puck doesn't necessarily end the play. Penalties can be called on a penalty shot which may result in a re-do. The ref could've called a tripping penalty on the goalie even though he stopped the shot, made the puck move away from the net or made the puck stop moving altogether. So, the play would not be over, as you stated, because the shooter would get another attempt.
@theonlyraid8372
@theonlyraid8372 Год назад
@@alan2112drums yeah obviously if ruled a penalty it would be redone but Askarov completely stopped the puck with the pokecheck then the other player over skated it before tripping. The puck stopped moving towards the net and the play was called a save.
