not controversial to me. play until the whistle blows. simple as that. sometimes pros forget the 101 basics of their sports. Look how many people drop the ball in football before getting into the endzone.

The official in charge of pressing the button for a Commercial break pressed the button hence the do playing music. So the official is kind of to be blamed for this.

I think you're right entirely. The referee was watching for pressure and Tampa peeled off the attack the moment the puck was caught. I don't know, it seems much more like Tampa's fault but at the very least it's a shared fault between both the Lightning and the linesmen who also got fooled. But the referee looked a bit shocked and was expecting to stop the play when nobody from Tampa made it half way into the zone. I don't know, that's on Tampa in my opinion but I also don't blame them for being pissed off nor for them being fooled. I just think they need to get off the laurels and play to the whistle at all times, these scenarios have happened many, many times. Not this one specifically but play to the whistle scenarios.

What I don’t understand is like, nobody from Lightning was there because what are they suppose to do? Charge the net for the goalie to just hold it? Why would the goalie drop a puck near the net when they’re right there? Players are there fast enough that dropping isn’t a the right strategy. I don’t think the ref should have forced the play. They’re suppose to stop delays, but that’s when there are not players in the offensive zone there to pressure. The goalie felt pressure to hold the puck. I don’t like that the ref can just device for the goalie what pressure means. I don’t care for the “play until the whistle” because, I don’t always hear the whistle. It could have just been a weak blow or whistle during the DJ playing the music. I don’t know. I don’t like it. I think it’s all within the rules, but I can’t say I agree. The goalie didn’t pick up a random puck. He depending a shot on goal. The goalie felt pressured to stop the puck. The ref could have dropped the whistle or it slipped out of his mouth. You don’t know that, but when a player without possession is just standing around and waiting for a puck drop and it’s not there, literally what are the offensive players options? Risk a penalty because they thought they didn’t hear a whistle when it could have blown? In those split seconds, it seems the safer thing is to assume the puck stopped moving and it’s a stoppage.

Have you never watched hockey before? on 99% of shots there is a player heading to the net to either get a rebound, create traffic in front of the net, or just to simply be a nuisance. The nearest Lightning player at the time of the shot was in the face-off circle and he was skating away from the net. "Risk a penalty because they thought they didn’t hear a whistle when it could have blown?" How would they be risking a penalty? Nobody is saying that they should have just started hitting people or ran the goalie over. Skating up to another player is not a penalty.

yeah i doubt he would have gotten a penalty. the ref would have blown the whistle then went to him and said next time play the puck if you don't hear my whistle. its happend to me a few times. i usually hold it to get a line change for my guys, I just nod an "ok" and that's that.

I assumed it was the goalie's choice if he played it. not the referee.

@@jamesgrantham7281 Interestingly no - but it is exceedingly rate to call a penalty on a goalie who freezes the puck (whilst in his crease) even over the direction to "play it" from the ref... I can't say that I've ever seen it happen. Warnings? sure thing. And mostly, if there are no attackers around (e.g. an icing attempt that happens to be on-net), there is usually incentive on the goalie to play it anyways (because it is the opposing team that is trying to get a change in and maybe they can be caught off-guard). I've never seen a goalie freeze the puck with nobody in his zone on that type of play, even if it is on net... they'd have to just let it sit there, wait for the opposing player to actually apply pressure, and then they could freeze it (which oddly enough, results in even more time being killed)

After holding the puck that long there should have been a whistle or delay of game call. This definitely needs to reviewed by the league and rules need to be enforced better.

@@beardreacts2740 I mean...you should still play til a whistle though. They just assumed right when it was saved the whistle was gone already. Watching at full speed I don't know if it's delay of game but they could've called that.

​@@beardreacts2740the ref gave him the "keep it moving" sign and that's when he dropped it. He too thought the play would be whistled dead. If he ignored the ref he would have gotten a penalty but he didn't so play continues. No need to review any rules as none were broken, just Tampa players giving up on a play they thought was over....play to the whistle. If it was a playoff game not one player would have skated away, maybe the lack of intensity is why Tampa is fighting for a wildcard spot right now.

Even the ref thought it was gonna be dead but when he saw no Tampa players at the net you clearly see him gesture with his right hand to keep it moving, so he dropped the puck. Saying you saw a ref call something last season means nothing because consistency in the NHL refs is not a strong point and never has been.

Count how many seconds he held it with no whistle. Should have been a delay of game.

This might be relevant if this play didn't result in a freeze 100 times a night in the NHL.

@@beardreacts2740 Yeah, and he also assumed the play was over. Either it's Tampa's fault for putting zero pressure on the goalie or it's officials fault. But in no way should it have been a delay of game. As soon as he realized it he played the puck, Tampa peeled off the second the puck hit the goalie. You play to the whistle, too many times have we seen scenarios like that to NOT play to the whistle and the fact that others got fooled isn't an excuse for not being sure the play was over, it's just not. We've all seen these scenarios BEFORE, you PLAY TO THE WHISTLE lol that's all there is to it, these scenarios have occurred too many times. Not this specifically, this was an odd one, but not playing to the whistle has bitten the ass of many a team. Every NHL player ought to know that.

@@beardreacts2740it doesn’t matter, under the rule book, the play is only blown dead if there is offensive pressure, this is to prevent teams from giving it to their goalie for a freeze. It isn’t enforced this way very often but by the rule book the refs did the right thing.

one time in minor hockey I tried holding onto it in a similar scenario and the ref shouted at me to pass it, never tried doing that again. this certainly didn't happen though lol

He's mad because of the inconsistency. You said it yourself.... they blow this dead wayyy too early. They do it almost every single time. Everyone including the lineseman, DJ, and every player on the ice thought it would be blown dead. They're conditioned to think this, because historically that's how it's called. Except for once a year when they decide not to.

@@mrichardsonmobile They typically blow it early other times because while there might not be players nearby causing pressure, they're clearly moving toward the net and so the ref doesn't want it to go too long and risk a pileup in front of a net or the opposing team doing the old spray the goalie with ice while stopping trick, which often ends up in a fight sooner or later. This is just a weird time where it was clear no one was heading toward the net.

@@danmac9336 Anderson was not skating, he was coasting. He did not leave his feet until the hit was completed. That's what happens when you skate at 40 kph and come to a sudden stop. It's called momentum. Hockey is a contract sport, nothing wrong with a clean, hard hit.
