I've been following you for close to two years. You've always done a good job of including historical information around the area you're working, especially the hard rock mines, but I am really enjoying this historical series that you've been doing lately too. Keep up doing a great job of creating enjoyable and educational content! Thank you, from someone who lives in an area of historic mining that is different and similar all at the same time.

Another great history lesson especially for those of us living in the past in the USA (Australia is ahead of us its tomorrow there lol) so I have little understanding of the gold rushes over there. Nice gold count for sure 🤩. Lynx creek where I prospect was a huge placer deposit so large that president Abraham Lincoln sent a land dredge over to it to help finance the civil war. Their sluice boxes were also not very good and you can still find sluice tailing in certain benches next to the creek one side is large boulders with very little dirt between them and a few feet away you find the sluice tailings (small heavy gravels mixed with clay and very good gold you can usually get a 10th gram per half to 3/4 of a five gallon bucket with the odd picker or two mixed in. Love finding those sections they are unmistakable when you find one and it’s very exciting in my book. Thanks for sharing see you on the next one 👍🏼👊🏼

I would guess that finding nuggets the size of a golf ball means that fine gold is not worth worrying about. Their sluice boxes caught most of the big stuff even if it missed half of the gold, the small gold. Easy pickings vs hard work.

Great video. Glad I subscribed. How do you work an area to find the sweet spot? I watch a video years ago. The guy found an untouched valley. He started upstream. Dug a hole, panned it. Walked about 10-15 steps. Rinse and repete. He marked the heaviest consitraition and work that after his test pans.

They didn’t all run it all through the box with riffle. Most of the material ran through boxes with no Recovery system! They would only run the concentrated material usually at the end of the season. It took 45 men One week to cut 5000 board feet. We have Mills today that can cut over 1 million board feet in a day with less than 200 men.

G'day Chris. I'm a newbie prospector from Geelong and I'd love to know where exactly you are panning, if that's something you are willing to divulge lol. My local was dollys Creek, where I have had mediocre success, but during my last outing there I was victim of armed robbery during the night that has resulted in me suffering extreme ptsd and me not being able to return. Any info would be appreciated. Cheers, Scott

Hi Chris, What's about mercury in the old mining areas? I can't remember you ever found mercury contaminated gold. In most areas of the world, miners used (and still using) mercury to recover/catch the fine gold particles. I'd expect the ground is also loaded with mercury in the Australian gold fields…
