This GT4 sounds better than GT4RS; change my mind

GT4RS review embargo is finally removed and what most reviewers touch on is the visceral experience and the emotional sound of GT4RS that sets it apart from GT4. While we can't argue the technical improvements that add up for the amazing car that GT4RS is, I would argue with a few mods, you can make the more easily available GT4 sound as good (if not better) than GT4RS.

As someone who has driven the gt4rs and has a gt4 on order. This has gone a long way in closing the gap. Personally i prefer induction noise to exhaust but this particularly for a "regular non gt 4 liter" sounds amazing. Its a shame that with JCR and most of the aftermarket mufflers you loose the rear areo benefits of the stock exhaust. The extra 100 hp and 1000 rpm though is hard to beat sadly.

wow that means a lot coming from you! there is def no question in the fact that GT4RS is a better car all around. There is no replacement for a GT3 engine that revs to 9K and I can only imagine how sweet is the induction noise happening inches from your ears. That said, there is a middle ground between a stock GT4 and a stock GT4RS from the emotional aspect. You have driven a stock GT4 and i am sure you can attest to the fact that it sounds too civil for a GT car. This setup has really brought the car to life and transformed my ownership experience. It has made driving the car feel more of an occasion than it used to feel. I feel giddy everytime I drive through a tunnel or hit the 6k rpm. I think what makes GT4RS such an amazing car is the emotional aspect of it, that makes it a better car than a GT3 and in that sense, my point is you can add much more emotion to your GT4 without having to buy 10 macans from your porsche dealer or spend 100k over msrp. I 100% agree with you about how aftermarket exhausts like JCR ignored the aero boxing, but akra muffler has stayed true to the original design, which would have been my second choice if I didnt go with JCR. Congrats on the inbound GT4 and keep up the amazing videos at SG. I love the technical deep dives you guys do and am low key jealous of how you guys get your hands on marketing design slides of porsche.

I’m amazed as well to see Jack himself writing here! Big fan btw I own a GT4 718 with mods and my brothers owns a GT3RS 911.2 For both street n track and driver engagement hands down a base GT4 can exceed your want. The GT3RS (or any RS nowadays) always come with a compromise qith firmer everything gears, agility, and raw characters which isn’t necessarily good for occasional street use but weapon in track that gets numbers and easy to beat rivals with little skill and exp. Rev to 9k tbh is almost non existent in street + you feel furious if you do it outside of track just to change 2-3 gears to enjoy for 10 seconds and will get you in trouble where manual isn’t gona make you go bananas. Reminds me alot with Jeremy when he said the rpm is in the top shelf of your kitchen its there but you rarely use it

@@blendlinegarage42 thanks for the kind words. I am really happy to hear you enjoy your gt4, i do tend to agree that the car is muted. I ruined the car for myself in someways by spending so much time in the 991.1,.2 and 992 gt3s before driving the 718 gt4. That said the gt4 is amazing, and for its price point. its absolute madness in this country how dealers can absolutely rake you over the coals the way they do. Yes, no doubt the GT3 engine is more superior in many ways, but more specially in the way it revs an extra 1k. That being said, for the rest of rev range, with the particulate filter and the current muffling on GT4RS, I still think my setup sounds better (based countless videos ive' watched on GT4RS sound). The 8-9k rev range is sweet but as you can see in this video, unless you are smashing the throttle in a straight line, PDK won't keep you in that last bit of rev range for too long. Great video, looks like a lot of fun! I finally ordered the JCR valved silenced exhaust, looking to pair it with the JCR silenced OAPs once they are out. How has your setup changed the sound from inside the cabin? Only thing I'm afraid of is if the exhaust will drown out the beautiful induction sound from inside the cabin. I wonder if BMC air filters improve the sound in any way that would be worth installing.
@blendlinegarage42
@blendlinegarage42 2 года назад
Thank you and congrats! you can't go wrong with that setup. it really transforms the car inside and out. You do get some drone around 2-2.5K RPM but that is expected from any free flowing x pipe setup. That said, you will hear a lot more bangs at gear changes (specially with PDK) and burbles when you let off throttle. JCR def gives the car a higher pitch (mostly due to the titanium material and how they resonate sound) which will resemble that of GT3s. BMC filters would def add more volume and make the intake sound even more noticeable but I opted against them because 1) you need to remove a whole bunch of interior panels to get to them 2) as good as they are, they let in more dust and dirt compared to factory paper filter. I'm hearing unless you put a ridiculous number of miles or live next to mine the extra unfiltered dust won't make much impact to the engine but the perfectionist in me would obsess over it so I opted against it. Even as is, the car is plenty chaos. If you ever did OAP, JCR, BMC do post a video I am curious to hear the madness.

i think you are missing the point of porsche GT cars. I own few Porsches myself including the new 718 GT4 and 992 turbo s. I drove the both the 991.2 GT3 and the 992 GT3 on track and theres a reason why gt4 is the perfect car for noobie track drivers. Its a lot more forgiving on the turns because of the higher gear ratio and lower HP comparing to a rear engine GT3 or the new GT4rs. It also depends on the type of track and events your are doing. The GT4RS will be much less forgiving considering the lowered gearing ratio and faster speed. Neither the GT4RS nor the GT3 are car new drivers should even be buying. There is no point to jump into a GT3 without any track experience. That's something only posers would do. I dont think the 991.2 GT3 is much better than the 718 GT4 but its more fun and challenging. The EA9A2Evo engine is not a lesser engine compare to the EA9A1 but thats not the point. Don't compare those nonsense. Porsche build cars for purpose and the 4RS is targeted towards a small crowd of buyers. Once you master the GT4, maybe mod it or upgrade to a gt3. Personally i dont think any mods are good because you would want to upgrade the car once you reach its full potential. But if you want to mod, its easy to make it as fast as a 4rs or gt3 but only mod with purpose. Most ppl crying about the GT4RS on the internet are ppl who never even tracked. Dont be titling those videos like a noob. its embarrassing to compare stock GT4RS sound to your aftermarket exhaust.
@blendlinegarage42
@blendlinegarage42 2 года назад
i think you are missing my point. I never added exhaust to get better performance out of the car. in fact, with the backbox alone it seemed like i lost HP throughout the rev range (see my other videos). if you do have a 718 GT4, you must already know this, stock exhaust is too muffled from factory. It takes a lot of emotion out of the ownership experience which shouldnt be the case for a GT car. Most people who mod their GT4 do it with the purpose of giving it some of the GT3 goodness in sound department. GT4 is plenty of car for my skill levels on track. But the enhanced sound makes ownership experience much much much more emotional than it used to be. Thats why I am comparing 4RS with GT4.

@@blendlinegarage42 I don’t mind your exhaust setup. I just dont like the comparison of an aftermarket setup to a stock car. GT4RS sounds good but that’s all there is. the 4RS is all hype job. The 24sec lap time improvement over the standard GT4 is a phony number. You should know that The GT4-MR setup improves the standard GT4 lap time by 12+ sec on regular cup 2 tires. Porsche also used a better driver for the GT4RS lap. Christian Gebhardt is a 2nd tier driver compare to Jörg Bergmeister. With cup-2R tires on a GT4MR, the car could easily run a sub 7 min lap very similar to the GT4RS. Maybe 4-5 sec behind a 4RS mainly due to the straight line acceleration. If you factoring in the track cost, the GT4 is the better track toy than the GT4RS Forsure. Internet dummies hyping over the GT4RS have no clue about the running cost on a RS car. The 4RS is really for ppl who have lots of experiences driving a GT3. The GT4 is much more popular among true drivers. You could watch Meisha’s channel for a detail breakdown of why ppl trading in 992 GT3 for GT4. We are very lucky to own a 718 GT4 because everything is going electric soon. Enjoy the car and don’t think it’s any less of a car than the GT4RS. Let the noobs think that and pay the $100K markup. The car doesn’t worth $250-300K.

@blendlinegarage42

louder is definitely better :) intake noise is over rated. I hear plenty of intake noise in my GT4, maybe not 16 inches from my ear but maybe 24? its not inside cabin but how about i crack the windows? if i ever find myself craving for that little more intake noise, i will just throw in a set of BMC filters. not trying to make excuses, my point is objectively the exhaust to exhaust, mine sounds better compared to factory GT4RS. both pitch and volume. The extra intake noise and 1k rev range, is def sweet on 4RS but doesn't elevate your ownership experience by 120k which is the prem you will likely pay on the 4RS once they hit the market.

Okay I've made some comments on my thoughts for the 718 the motor in the gt4 is the same motor as the 911 turbo except it doesn't have the turbos on it. Wich is why it can feel a little lack luster at times even at 420hp because it's supposed to have boost behind it. The motor in the gt4rs is the same one that's in the gt3 etc. They had to flip the motor around wich equates likley to a longer exhaust and possibly a different manifold design. I think it being a 718 it will likely still accept the same jcr rear exhaust section but if you want opf delete or over axle pipes for that car a company is going to have to design new ones. I will agree the gt4 sounds fantastic with your exhaust setup jcr makes similar but I think slightly better over axle pipes with the same heat shielding that's in the apropovic units. If you want the Intake noise the gt4rs provides I think it might be as simple as upgrading the filters. If in fact it is the same motor in the gt4 that's from the 911 turbo I hope someone comes out with a supercharger kit/procharger. 8k rpm is great but the car needs to be at 500 hp never mind the things that are options that should be factory like the upgraded stereo android auto and Apple car play. Led lights illuminated door sills etc. But if it's the same motor that means it has alot of potential that is totally un tapped considering where you can take a 911 turbo with minimal upgrades. Could easily squeeze the car to 650 whp no sweat and it should take just about every bit of it. What I will say is both the gt4 and gt4rs look fantastic I wouldnt rock all the exposed carbon fiber on the rs... The factory centerlock wheels look fantastic.

Price and manuel trans is win win...for 1000 rpm to pay that price is just insane. Gt4 is awesome car who need better have small penis or some problem like that :) :) :) On rs you need to change exhaust like on any other car coz of regulations lose a lot but point is trans and price...i love cars but 200k for 718 is just insane
