Old games heavily borrowed from table top games and MUD systems. End game was a byproduct, added as a filler to do something between expansions. Those guys, went on a journey separately. They met each other, formed a friendship, and when they finally arrived to a destination, they sat on a bench. And all they remember is sitting on a bench. And that's how WoW was made. Mass produced benches.

If you look at pre-WoW MMOs like, say, Ultima Online or Star Wars: Galaxies, they were all about creating a sandbox for players to play in. Do what you want, build houses, gather, craft. Make your own stories. This is why vanilla WoW was the exact same thing: an open world set in the Warcraft universe for people to play in. It wasn't until later on in WoW's life (like, was pointed out here, Burning Crusade and later) that the focus centered around end game. When it took you 4-5 months to reach endgame as a casual player in vanilla, that was fine because you had plenty of content to explore. Leveling up as a human in the Eastern Kingdoms gave you a different experience from leveling a night elf in Kalimdor. Or a Forsaken. Or an orc. There was plenty to do and experience. But that shifted as expansions released smaller and smaller areas to explore and the focus started to shift to racing through it as quickly as possible to start doing new (for then) end game content, like heroic dungeons and more and more raids. Which is fine, I suppose, but it cuts out all of those players who were there just for the exploration and fun of discovering new things. Throw in the lack of player housing and the eventual uselessness of most crafting and there's not really much for people to do who aren't hardcore raiders or mythic+ runners. Meanwhile, Ultima Online is *still* around, and player-run Star Wars: Galaxies servers (pre-NGE version, before Sony ruined the game by turning it into an EverQuest clone) are still popular because they fill that niche that later iterations of MMOs sort of abandoned. Then you've got the story-driven MMOs like The Old Republic and Final Fantasy 14, both of which offer less of a focus on end-game content (which hurt SWTOR initially, but which has since stabilized and has a vibrant, thriving community) and plenty of things to do like in-depth housing systems, appearances/glamours, crafting, and so on. The real irony is that WoW got super popular by being the super casual MMO. Now, the only draw to WoW are the hardcore stuff like raids and mythics. There's really no super casual content anymore.
@bobbycrosby9765
@bobbycrosby9765 2 года назад
Vanilla WoW was basically Everquest made easier, Both games were less sandboxy and less open than UO or SWG. People like to hold it up as some pinnacle and I think it was a good game, but I have to laugh whenever people call it a sandbox style game. Everquest, to Vanilla WoW, to modern WoW a continuation of the same line. Also, you could argue Everquest's precursor was SojournMUD - a MUD both Brad McQuaid and John Smedley played. Also, I think it's a bit funny you mention both UO and SWG. Raph Koster was the lead designer on UO, and he was the creative director of SWG. You're trying to create a generality where they don't exist, SWG and UO were open because that's the type of MMO Raph Koster liked to make.

👍What a ride down memory lane. I can still remember living through this and reading the message board posts as they were happening. I didn't agree with them back then, and I still don't today on their inability to enjoy a journey. I was more attached/engaged in one month of playing EverQuest than a year of playing WoW. The memories of the people I met and the places we adventured to together. Nothing like that is comparable with the solo WoW experience.

There's a reason why FFXIV is doing so well. It's not just about end game. The story is embraced. The end game is supported, but not the only focus. There's so much other stuff to do. I think a lot of people are just sick of the old formula and catering to the 1%.

I couldn't agree any more than I do with this statement. I want an MMO that feels more like a tabletop RPG. D&D was the basis for most MUDs (multi user dungeons online), which became the basis for the first MMOs. I've had people tell me that there's no way an MMO can do something like that, but isn't that just because they haven't tried? Also, FoH was on Veeshan - my EQ server, and I raided. Ran into them many times farming in the high level dungeons. Furor and his entire guild, really, were tools back then. What I didn't know was that he ended up working for Blizz, or that Furor was Alex Afrasiabi. Not super surprised now that I do know - he was jerk in the game... like, he was to your average online gamer as your average online gamer is to someone's saintly grandma.

Ppl think that boring is the reason why a game die or it’s bad game without actually questioning that so they really care about what other thinking? You can technically watch XIV official forum recently. You can see that with how ppl talk about gaming in general. You don’t design for a perfect game, you design for ppl who actually interested to it. MMO doesn’t need to keep ppl in loop to survive. Just make things that work for itself and reaching out to those who like it. Honestly, PVP or competitive side of gaming is something the most annoying group that all I see are objective focuses. If you replace a game with something that make you happy and appreciate it because they exist, which one should be better? Do games must be about tolerance of a person to satisfy their needs or just make for whatever the reason they have to? Is there a pleasure to do that? You can’t really just form a way then trying dip on anything that not in that route and disqualify it. Otherwise, we don’t even have ppl that take risk to change something or indie games to play. MMO in general dying because that was a thing where it’s the only way for oneself to prove that they’re right and the just. Otherwise, anything is bad as it doesn’t fit the category. That’s what pride like plus voting outcome not because of money issues.
@dale7326
@dale7326 2 года назад
I also disagree that Witcher storytelling is consistent or variety enough btw. You can’t compare this to that when you only look on a single aspect of something then comparing with another that run on the larger picture for the validation of the whole thing where others are choosing a different route due to their approach and application.

As much as I liked WOW, undoubtedly these guys basically ruined MMOs overall with their "only raids matter" focus. They aren't responsible for all the failed MMOs that were copying WOW, but the reason there's basically nothing else to do in WOW is because the design of that game's been focused on raiding as the most important element since it was first released, until gradually it's now the only important element to the developers.

It always amazes me how tunnel-visions people get with the concept of end-game. I remembered the first time I played an MMO with the intention of being a skiller/crafter/gatherer and I fell in love. Crafting in MMOs can be deep enough to be full strategy games on their own with the kinds of planning and calculating that you can do. I remember when I played BDO I rarely ever did combat because full-time skilling was like a really good city/economy/merchanting simulator. Then I look at what other people are doing and 90% of players don't even know that this whole half of the game exists. This annoys me because crafting systems keep getting simpler. Why put dev time into something that 90% of players ignore.

It's the same thing with Ion being the lead game designer. Dude's from Elitist Jerks and was lead encounter designer before he took over the big chair. Which explains why raids (and, to a lesser extent, dungeons) get great encounters, but the story is crap, the entire non-raid, non-mythic end game is just crappy grindfests for sliver thin power gains that will be worthless in the next patch, and a desert-like dearth of actual content.

End game should be a broad span of activities that your maximum levels enable. If you want to have a Guild Castle, you have to commit a major raid which takes half the guild treasury if you lose. If you want to be a Guild of Crafters, you are going to spend half that treasury buying, and fighting for, a few unique recipies. No you do not get to pursue stuff like that because it is all the "Kill the big Baddie." in the current raid.

6 years, 365 days a year, 12+ hours a day of Everquest and nothing looks like actual grinding ever again (4head). I laughed when I first played WoW because it seemed so gentle after that history. Re the whole endgame thing, Black Desert and Guild Wars 2 have completely zero end-game, like none, they only nominally have a mid game but both those games are very financially successful. The thing to understand as a designer is that there are actually a number of broad camps of MMO players, end game obsessives are just one of them, for every end game raider there's a guy who likes chopping trees for 8,000 hours. It's not a REQUIREMENT that you service all of them but its not a barrier either. If you have a big, well organised dev team with money you can cater to all camps in your one MMO (FF14), if you have less resources you can focus on one of them (BDO), you just need to make rational decisions that don't lead you down the path of making all of them badly and then "making no one happy". Adjust your ambition to your resources and capabilities.

I'm thankful that I did eventually try WoW because it's not a horrible game. If you just play it as a massive world to explore and learn stuff in, it's actually fun. It has a great RP scene. This... I've always hated this from the moment I learned about how players want to be in the endgame and nowhere else. It's always skip, skip, skip, skip. Skip as much as you can so you can get to endgame faster. As a player, who would like to enjoy the story first and foremost AND AT MY OWN PACE, do not care about that in the least. And I do this in order to get invested in the game world and the characters and to learn about the game lore. Problem with that is that it usually leads to other players dissing you outright, kicking you out of guilds and overall not wanting to play with you, calling you slow and "too casual". Yeah, I've experienced that too many times. To which I say "Your loss" and just continue on playing the game as I want to play it, just like they want to play the game like they want to. And it is this reason why I think it's a shame that nobody really cares about the story and lore of WoW. Yet another reason for me to actually love FF14. These days I wouldn't even touch a single player game that expects me to grind much at all, let alone a one multiplayer. However that was the norm in the past. For the longest time I remember associating MMOs with a long and unfulfilling grind, which is why I never really wanted to return to them. I gave FF XIV only a shot after Matts repeated prosetalyzations got me curious and (equally) only because it had a free trial. I enjoyed the game because the game is fun and I never felt like I am milked for all my time to have at least some of enjoyment in it. Modern MMOs trying to monopolize the daily attention span of their player base will fail a lot faster than they did in the past imo. There are way too many options for good games that an MMO cannot any longer rely on it' s significant time investment as a retention strategy. Why play "grindy game" when X other games of at least equal fun exist and could be enjoyed instead?

Savage raids being what most people will do but for those really hardcore players they have their ultimates
@yoda0017
@yoda0017 2 года назад
I don't think most players even do Savage. Pretty sure there have been some surveys and only maybe 25% clear savage difficulty raids. So we can bump that number up a bit as there are some who will try and not clear so maybe only a third tries Savage. I think most are plenty content to do the story, do the more casual / midcore content (think 24 man raids and EX trials) and call it a day.

It makes you wonder if Kaplan really left Overwatch due to the constant toxic pressure of Activision and WoW teams, or if he was, like Afrasiabi, let go under strange circumstances. What is true of one person's interactions with a singular person doesn't make it a universal reality. It's just that even if Jeff was a good person and didn't abuse or protect abusers, he left at a very suspicious time. Also, it seems that the toxic behaviour of Evercrack players seeped deeply into WoW and the WoW team. It's sad to think that Blizzard thought this was a good thing, but I guess they were the only really dedicated MMO players at the time, so they were really the only practical experts available. Now that games have become more ubiquitous, you don't have to rely on bottom-feeders with bad work ethic and poor leadership skills to make great games. Most bastards I know do NOT have a heart of gold, contrary to the trope. They just approach different relationships differently, because of the benefits of the relationship or the power balance that has to be maintained.

God. The good old days. I was in Fires of Heaven and I remember Alex being so pissed about Plane of Time after we dealt with the Rathe Council bullshit in the Plane of Earth. Everquest had it's cons in many ways, but it was by far the best gaming experience I ever had. Everything since then has been total care bear casual shit. You had to make friends in Everquest or you just couldn't play the game.

Rathe was such bs, on the money there. Then again at least it keyed everyone that got a hail vs dumb shit like Lucid Shard farming, Sleepers Tomb (turning in what was often an upgrade for you or another guildmate), Trak Tooth time sink for VP, Bane Weapons. But you're right, nothing comes even close, & an actual penalty for fucking up is what made the accomplishments outweigh the equivalent in other games. Lack of instancing, the racing...something people would never even put up with today, especially w/ about 13 sec attention span. Cheers.

It's so ironic that this "end-game centric" design was spawned from EQ players because despite the hardcore nature of EQ end game raiding EQ's entire game design was literally the opposite of WoW. The leveling was painfully slow and arduous. The penalties for dying were severe to the point that if you had just leveled and died you could lose your current level (including the ability to cast spells you just learned). Most players never even got to max level because it took so long. EQ was absolutely more about the journey than the destination. Guilds like FoH and LoS were the extreme minority. I honestly wish WoW had taken more of the other parts of EQ than what it did. It streamlined/removed some of the best/most interesting parts of EQ and elaborated on some of the most tedious parts. Don't get me wrong I loved raiding but I also loved the long arc of leveling and grouping with all the social elements, class interdependence and interesting class interactions. I think WoW is stale and lately I have been playing on a new EQ classic TLP server and the mechanics still hold up even if the graphics don't. The server is packed as well so I know I'm not the only one. I have a feeling classic MMOs are making a comeback and I think you can even see that with the rise of hardcore classic WoW. It's also ironic that WoW sought to streamline away much of the challenge and difficulty of EQ and look where they are now? An even more harsh death penalty than EQ ever had.

Funny enough I loved the journey to the endgame in tbc up to mists(mists did piss me off eith the blatant nerfing of things just cause theorycrafters hated missing something) but afterwards ir was such a boring gear grind of endgame with the rest being unpolished gsrbage that I hated my journeys in wod through to shadowlands. Xiv I do hate that 3 classes are story locked and they REALLY need to fix that but otherwise the story is fun(still hate you to death stormblood) and swtor I grabbed after the fallen empire expansion made the game fun to just enjoy from start to rnd with the end game being entirely quest focused with raids added in at the right intervals when ppl craved some more massive battle content. All in all, I do hope they shift from end game only to journey to the end with some choice extras at endgame made to make raiders happy but keeping the bulk for those who want to live in the game world.

That's why I don't like MMOs in general. This forcing of playing with others to do certain things like raids. I have no issues playing with other people occasionally but having to juggle timetables with sometimes dozens of people is something I don't want to be bothered with. That's why I like Star Wars The Old Republic. It has a real story for every character class, which can be played alone. Raids are purely optional

Legacy of steel... More like... legacy of steel-itist I kinda wish that MMOs would rather work on giving players variety and people are slowing waking up from the shackles due to how the design just becomes even more ridiculous than the last, to the point that it's inconceivable to an average human being. I mean... third party software has been added to the mix and its no wonder people resort to these kinds of stuff. Even if you did it... what's left to do? Its really is damaging to a person's mentality if this goes on that it slowly becomes an abusive design.

Was in a top EQ progression guild when WoW came out, was crazy. EQ had to change the whole death system cause WoW made it like totally no real punishment for deaths. And now look , we have nothing but half ass games that you can just walk through cause death is no big deal. Ya WoW is responsible for the fucking up the MMO genre in more ways than one.

The thing is, WoW had the right idea to start (in my opinion, at least). It didn't have a focus on the super hardcore stuff like EverQuest did. Instead, it was just a big, open world to explore, one where you got to go and see places and meet people that you'd spent so much time with in Warcraft 2 and 3. It was the perfect blend of "choose your own adventure" and sightseeing tour.

Tbh I think its telling that some of the most competitive and hardcore MMO gamers at the time were at the forefront of WoW's inception. While I would assume right now allot of fresh blood in the WoW team consists off more casual players. It might be an unpopular opinion but you can rest assured that casual equals low energy and low energy equals shitty output. What you want it some absolute stone cold killers on your team that are willing to go above and beyond to get things done. Blizzard has become way to soft this last decade and it shows. People might not like the truth but if you want a good game you cant always have the nice casual people in charge. Just think about it for a second before arguing back at me.
@lampdevil
@lampdevil 2 года назад
The casual vs. hardcore split sometimes misses that a hardcore player is not necessarily a player that only does the hardest content/raids all the time/only crunches the numbers. That's what most people do think of when the discussion turns to talking about "hardcore", either in praise or in dismissal, but it is entirely possible to play an MMORPG as a hardcore crafter, hardcore auction house maven, hardcore side content enjoyer, hardcore social event hoster. There's this tendency in the discussion to vastly overvalue People Who Raid over people who do anything else, even if the people doing that anything else have built their entire lives around being the best darn house decorator/glam designer/chocobo racer they can be. You're not wrong in that you want passionate, "hardcore" people on your game dev team, but their passions need to be diverse and they need to understand that a chair with only one leg is going to fall over.
@mikev8746

@@lampdevil I mean obviously thats one way. My point was more that these guys are all clearly these type-A nerds that just came in to bust balls and create the best endfucking game content they could make no matter the costs. That's what you want in a game, pure energy. And it attracted people with likewise personalities. I only played in the day but I really get a feeling back then you had these no fucks given types of guys, nerds sure but still. I mean the Onyxia wipe song guy for example, sure its a raging nerd. But the point is these guys were all just competing and trying to get an egde over one another. Hell even the people not raiding high up the ladder were rough around the egdes. And it got them millions of likeminded subscribers lo and behold. Nowadays I think the crowd that plays WoW and such are different. Like I really do and notice that. And I don't think thats a bad thing. But it's just a different type of player thats engaging with WoW now. So they also need to be different. And what you say is true I mean look at FF14 and how these are probably some of the most hardcore story oriented developers they got. And the people that play that game just analyze the heck out of that games story content. There are so many ways to go full in on a concept be it the raiding, the story or the open world. The aim should be to get exceptionally passionate people in the right roles for the job. I think WoW development lacks that. It needs to decide what it is and hire hardcore people from that area of expertise.
