His parents also seem the right age range to have been young in the 70s, so I can see them at least trying it to know it wasn't their bag. Mark having cancer could have been something to make the Carriker clan think about the benefits of medicinal use of weed if it helped Mark with pain and nausea from any chemo drugs or painkillers.
