I’m from Porirua, born and raised then moved to South Auckland a couple years back. Porirua is a beautiful tight knit community with massive hearts. Most of the trouble that happens there come from outsiders. Everyone is friendly and always down for a good chat. I miss home and will always be proud of my small town! I’ve been in Auckland for 10+ years and you really have to put yourself out there to make good friends. But great video and so good to see my home again ❤

Lived there as a child after we moved from the Netherlands. We felt way more welcome in Porirua East than we did in Northland. Happy memories.

I'm from Porirua and the locals are some of the friendliest people you will meet, like anywhere there is always going to be some who choose to behave poorly but on the whole the perception of Porirua is so wrong.

I done all of my schooling in Porirua from kindergarden in Cannons Creek, to Glenview Primary, then Brandon Intermediate and on to Porirua College, then joined a christian outreach church, then up and left the country at 17yrs old to travel and explore the world. I'd always remember how the people of Cannons Creek and Waitangirua, Porirua had big open hearts and known for it's hospitality. It's been over 37 years since I've been back there. And it seems like with these guys, that legacy of tradition is till carried on. Thank you for sharing. Have been living in London since.

Watching this whanau makes me so grateful to be Maori. This is the version of my people that gets overlooked with statistics. There's a reason we couldn't be who we truly are and that reason laughs at us for hopping whilst denying how we lost that leg. All it took this beautiful and amazing couple was, finding the truth. Thank you Jesus and bless this whanau and especially this loving, gentle, inquisitive, respectful couple ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉

Oh my God! That's my good friend Jordan Walker. He's very friendly and hospitable. He's my basketball teammate. I live in Lower Hutt, but sometimes I go visit Cannon's Creek and Waitangirua, I never felt unsafe there during the day. The street and the neighborhood doesn't look that bad, there are more worst place in the world. It actually looked a posh, wealthy place especially by the video from your drone. Those green hills are beautiful. I wish we can meet here in Lower Hutt, I live in Waterloo, not too far from your accom in Eastbourne.

Nice to see you visit Cannons Creek and Waitangirua. I grew up here in the 70s and 80s. I still visit to work here at times. The people are always friendly and humble, if you are the same back. The area suffered badly from industry closure in the 80s and many became unemployed, very much like everywhere else in the world, including the UK and Ireland

Big ups to you both for taking a look at some struggling communities around Wellington, but Mado, do listen to your instinct. It will be accurate. The two lads you met and had dinner with were great, like 99% of the people. But remember that the other 1% are out there! Take care guys.

Based in Auckland, I spent much of my childhood in Waitangirua and still have family there. I returned a couple of weeks ago for an unveiling of my Aunt's headstone at Whenua Tapu Cemetery as well as visit other family in Porirua. The area may not be one of NZ's affluent suburbs but the people are hospitable and look after each other.

I lived in Porirua, in Waitangirua and the people and neighbors were really friendly, it happened to me as well that just walking back home, a family having a bbq in their garden invited me to share a hot dog with them, which I gladly did! Everyone always warned me how dangerous it was and not to walk on the area, but i didn't had a car so, i had no other option than using public transport and walk up and down those streets everyday, and never seen anything bad going on.

My family immigrated to New Zealand from the Netherlands and settled in Porirua in the late 50’s early 60’s because it was an area that was starting to grow and attract young people with families, I have fond memories growing up in Cannons Creek and attending the local schools, the shopping centre in the 70’s and 80’s was a fantastic place, lots of different shops, even had a supermarket, bakery, butchers, sadly when the mall was built, the shopping centre starting seeing empty shops, now there are too many dairies, sadly you guys were misinformed about Cannons Creek being the most dangerous, Cannons Creek is no different from any other place in Wellington really, loved watching the video 👍

The waters warming up and a lot clearer now the weather is a bit more settled, you should go for a dive with the big guy, fresh seafood. As for the the guys in Corina street that is awesome it was a case of mutual respect people don't have much but respect is priceless, their kids will see what it's like to be generous even though they have little they are always happy to share. I'm dropping about 10 cartons of Indomie noodles off to the Lower Hutt Foodbank this Friday. There is a phrase in New Zealand "He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. It is the people, it is the people, it is the people", welcome to New Zealand. By the way when you were in Petone I work just up the road, the wharf was closed as there was a major earthquake a few years ago which compromised it's integrity, after all the Hutt Valley is a flood plane so we sit on top of a water table and aquifer, not to mention one of New Zealands biggest fault lines runs along the motorway base of Western Hutt hills, other side of the habour. Kia Kaha - Stay Strong enjoy your trip your attitude and personality make all the difference.

I use to sell stuff door to door and in NZ you do it in the poorer neighbourhoods cause that's where the nicer people are who will be happy to open there doors, invite you in and chat with you. The richer neighbourhoods are generally less welcoming to put it nicely.

I taught primary School in Cannon's Creek many many years ago. The kids were lovely and represented a lot a racial groups - Indian, several Pacific Islands and even a few Middle East Muslims. The community vibe was wonderful. But the gangs were definitely rough, they came to the Cannons Creek Tavern at night with pick axe handles or baseball bats in the trunks of their cars. Does not seem to have changed very much.

Really heartwarming to see you take the guys up on their offer. I commend you on taking the time to see the other side of Wellington, especially since youre situated in quite an affluent area (Eastbourne). Theres some really good bush walks around where i live in Wainuiomata and the lookout is pretty good as well. Id also suggest on a sunny day to take a drive out to Paraparaumu and if you feel up to it do the coastal walk at Paekakariki "Paekakariki to Pukerua Bay Escarpment Track"(stunning views of the coast and Kapiti island).

A wonderful Kiwi experience for you Glen and Mado! Ordinary folk are the fabric of any suburb or society. We do have areas or suburbs that perhaps have more challenges than others but you have shown the beauty and aroha of Porirua for sure. My daughter was visiting Dublin and Belfast in August this year and sent images of areas of Belfast that are also challenged and we are not alone in NZ in this regard. Thanks guys for such a heartwarming video.

Its no different anywhere else....low incomes = low socio economic activity. BUT often the communities are fabulous, because they know they all have very little, and so share what they have, when they can. It is usually NIGHT TIMES in areas that have little street lighting, coupled with late hours liquor shops and such like where the troubles happen....anywhere....

Hey Glen and Mado, its Wednesday and there is a great strawberry festival going on at Midland Park in Lambton quay. If you aren't out exploring our suburbs, come and get some strawberrys and icecream. All proceeds to the Hospice.

I have experienced a different side to the area. When I was young I was drinking in the public bar of the Cannons Creek pub when a fight broke out. The barmen quickly pulled screens down over the bar counters as there were glasses and jugs flying around. My mate quietly said “let’s go to the bar upstairs”. The upstairs bar was a lot nicer and we stayed for another hour or so. A couple of years later I was on the jury of a manslaughter case where a Maori was knocked over in the public bar when a bystander tried to separate the two angry men. The one that got knocked over died of head injuries. I was the only member of the jury who had been in the public bar of the Cannons Creek pub. This happened a long time ago and was traumatic for everyone involved.

Come to Mt Druitt in Sydney. No one has ever had a job. Although I heard someone’s Grandma had a job as a brickies labourer for a couple of weeks back in 79. It’s an eye opener.

Good to go somewhere off the normal tourist map. I actually worked at Cannons creek,in a Pharmacy, for 6 years, but I never actually checked out that actual creek, lake thing. Thanks for making the effort. And, yes , the people are friendly, but I am glad that I don't live there.😃

I am over eighty and spent yonks of time in Canons Creek with great friends and people. Never known a problem let alone heard gunshots. Perhaps because I have had the decency since the '60's to pronounce the Maori language correctly and be bicultural as well as be able to greet in Tongan, Samoan, Fijian etc. Also spent very happy times at the Waitangirua Marae.
