The first time I played live I watched like 5 different RU-vid videos on how not to be nervous when playing live and it actually kinda worked. I mean we played bad but I wasn't nervous💀
My first live show was actually opening up for a rap group. If it wasn’t for those guys hotboxing the backstage area, I would’ve been a lot more nervous for my first gig 😂
Great video Tyler! I've been a rock singer my whole life. I've done gigs for 20 people, 100 people and over a thousand people. On stage, I'm on fire. Anything and everything goes. But, when a small group of friends asks me to sing at a party I completely lock up. This video is sooooo true!! Looking forward to your new music.
This 100% applies to me whenever I have anyone in front of me. Or if i want to play something that i at one point knew but haven't played in like a day......
It's funny, I can play a gig in front of people with no issue, but if one person says play me something suddenly I have never played before. THis is spot on... Thanks Tyler
Tyler, I just have to say my hat really goes off to you! Over the last few years I have watched you grow tremendously through your channel. I know the time and effort it takes to just be able to hack through some standards, or be able to hang at a jam. There is no argument you are a great player. Aside from the instrument, the time spent listening, transcribing, time learning about gear etc. you have been able to hang with some of the best people in the industry! To have relationships with Mr PRS himself, Session cats like Tim Pearce and the numerous virtuoso powerhouse players, your doing something right!! There will always be haters out there but you get to make a living playing your instrument and doing what you love. Not being a slave to an hourly wage selling your own life for less than it’s worth. We know all too well how fame and fortune can destroy bands and artists yet not many people really understand the immense amount of work and hustle that it takes to be a working musician today. This video is great. Sooooo true. Hope you are enjoying your new LP by Patrick eggle, just don’t forget to give that 594 and SC245 some lovin too.
DUDE!!! I gotta say, man, been watching you for several years and the place you've gotten to with this channel is incredibly impressive. I've been a writer producer in LA for 30 years, won a few awards, had some hit shows and I have to say, as someone who knows crap when he sees it, you my friend, are not making crap! Your production values, editing, direction and acting are really pretty amazing. Clearly you've been putting your whole heart and soul into this since it started and well, it shows. Good on you brother. Thank you for this incredible channel. As a former student of the late RR, I can tell you without hesitation, he would have dug the hell out of what you do. Keep it up, man. Keep it up!!!
One of your best videos ever Sir,I know the shooting and editing must have been no half day for sure so thank you for the Stellar content and all of the hard work and time that goes into something meaningful, memorable, entertaining and uplifting.
My band and I played our first bar gig a few weeks ago and when it came time to do our sound check I looked out at the bar room and saw a few people that showed up early and completely forgot how to play guitar. Good to know all guitarists can relate
I absolutely loved this. I can see so much effort went into it and you pulled it off so well. I don't even play guitar but I love your videos and your relationship with the camera that is so casual.
WHAT an amazing way to promote this. So freaking well done, I didn’t even pick up on it til Blaze said “can’t do it live”, I was just enjoying the vid 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for the reference to my brother... he would have been laughing his butt off! It is always an honor to hear him memorialized even if just by name! Awesome!
Funny - and really well done (seriously)! I especially like the way you mock the crap out of everyone in the guitar sales and RU-vid gear review business when you imagine playing those completely different licks on entirely different guitars. Classic!
Thrilled to hear you are releasing an album, can't wait! Good luck at your opening performance! Also, RIP to Chet's namesakes. Lost but not forgotten. No one sings like them anymore.
Haha. You sort of did for me what Steve Vai did for you. Thank you for mixing that blue suit with that blue strat, even if it was brief. P.s. Ooooh, an album is forthcoming? I'm there.
I watch your videos casually when the algorithm throws them my way, but this one earned you a sub. So funny and the playing was killer. Very original. Great job!
Oooooh... this is familiar, it's happend to me a bunch of times. I love the way you put this senario together so funny. I've been watching your content for years and you are getting better. Keep up the great work & looking forward to hearing your new album.
This video was brilliant Tyler. The music sounds great and I look forward to the release. I'll support the Album but won't see you perform as I'm in the UK and definitely can't afford a holiday to Nashville. I have no doubt it will all be received exceptionally 😊
I started playing live when I was 8 in school concert band then moved up to marching and jazz band all through high school. Played bass, drums and guitar for the last 30 years in bands. I am 48 now and this still happens to me. I don't think it ever goes away. But luckily it lasts a whopping 2 seconds then its business as usual. Cool video concept btw lol.
My boy not a boy anymore; Your features are changing buddy and I'm stoked that you are playing variations of riffs... So glad your showing your talent more... Please keep this a periodical thing and Give it a name... I love your playing and I think you should showcase your abilities more often because there are guitarists that would love to hear you more... I'm proud of your ability to phrase on the guitar brother... If anyone agrees with me please respond. "I Agree!" Sincerely: The David Paul Rivera of (Doktah 77)
Im 14, I’ve been doing worshipping at my church, sometimes I play I front of tens, or hundreds, and sometimes a bit over 2k, no matter where, or when, this will always happen 😢
Yep. I can wail like EVH and Slash's baby in my bedroom with the headphones on, but put me in front of an audience of one or more, and I freeze up like a tadpole in an icy pond.
Heres a few pro tips- 1. Always practice 80% of ur time standing up. If u have 10 mins, 8 mins standing up 2. Always practice loud. (Not 11 on the amp but loud enough to hear ur inaccuracies) 3. Always put ur guitar strap little lower than comfort while practicing. When u are in front of an audience and slightly higher, its a big comfort boost. 4. Start your gig with an easier song. 5. Master the rhythm. Everybody messes up the solo.
Sadly so true! I tried to set up an online coaching business based on the same premise that every bedroom guitarist's worst fear is that people will find out they are not a "real musician".
I'm 61...playing since 9....serious since mind 40's...still can't/won't play in front of others....like test anxiety...I have 'playing in front of others' anxiety....but, working on it. Didn't have this problem in college...odd.
Ready to see more news dude.. Hope it all goes well! I can relate to this video lol. I keep telling myself more practice will ease the fears of making a mistake. Hopefully, I'll listen and just go play live sometime. You got this and an album debut at a venue is great. It means more to the fans, I think. More of a reason to show up.
Funny stuff. I definitely don't like playing front of others, but in my case my playing is just as bad when they are not around. I see you had a little Bill O'Reilly at the end of your video. Too funny.
There's a club in my town that has open mic night every Thursday. The owner doesn't care what you do, as long as it's no longer than 15 minutes and is entertaining. Some (most) just do a Karaoke of a few songs, some do a comedy routine, some play their instruments like a sax or acoustic, occasionally there's a magic show and things like that. I worked up a 3 song acoustic set with the backing tracks on my looper pedal. I did Sister Golden Hair, Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) and Margaritaville. I practiced for MONTHS before I even attempted it, and had all three down cold. I have my GF do the vocals, I do the acoustic. My first show was the 2nd act of the night, so it was still very early. There were exactly 8 people in the audience. The owner, the doorman, 2 servers, a bartender and 3 customers. I sat down, checked tuning, did the "check two three..." on the mic and hit the looper. I looked up and all 3 customers were starring straight at me. My mouth went bone dry. I had no spit to swallow. I got light headed and flushed. I began to play. I stopped looking up at the audience and just focused on my guitar and watching my gf. She sounded so good! That was all the backup I needed and I did all three songs without a hitch. I got a standing ovation. All three customers stood up and clapped. Let me tell you folks who never have performed live. Those three cheering me was like a whole arena. It's like a drug. Like crack cocaine is to a junkie. I never felt more self satisfaction than I did that moment. My pay? Well, I got one free drink from the bar, and a drink from one of the customers. Best beer I have ever tasted. A month later COVID hit and we went into lockdown. The bar didn't make it. It went under and I haven't found a new one yet. But I will!
It’s because when you play live, you’re playing actual songs with an actual band to an actual crowd as opposed to playing random guitar riffs by yourself to your friends or family.
I love all of your stuff, but this was next level! I’ve been watching you for about a year now and I also love your GuitarSuperSystem… It’s helped me a lot! Anyway, where’s your wedding ring… Would love to hear back on that one, but just want you to know you’re freaking awesome and you’re way more relatable than Steve Vai or Joe Satriani… So I just kind of channel them through you! OK I just got creepy. Sorry! I’m gonna stop talking now. Bye
