This is the story of Alberto Sanna, a 24 year old Italian pianist who recently finished his bachelor in one of the most prestigious universities of this planet, The Colburn School of Music, Los Angeles California. Alberto started at age six and by the time he finished his Bacheler in the States he literally could play anything that's been expected from a modern trained pianist ready to start the expected path of international competitions and what have you.
But Alberto more and more had questions. Questions regarding the way we play music of the past today. Why we play the way we play. Why we play so incredible fast. Why it is even not fast enough compared to the metronome numbers. But even though the teachers of this privately funded school are incredibly well paid he received ... zero answers.
And then one day he discovered something totally unexpected...

I really liked hearing this new perspective on XIXth century metronome marks. I agree with A. Sanna, that the tempo is the most important aspect of performance, and the first thing to look at. But not to settle. I find that it´s only possible to define tempo after a lot intimacy with the piece. And most importantly I think in the arts we need to always be open minded and try different approaches. In medieval and renaissance vocal music there is also a lot of debate regarding tempo and expressiveness. And how about gregorian chant that, most agree, do not have even a steady pulse? Sharing our knowledge and never stop asking why is surely the best way to find better answers.

That is one of the most important question for me too. Why would you bother with all the fascinating details if you can not hear them because of the speed? Good to see you, Alberto! Glad you found Wim and WBMP! Hope to hear you play soon!
@Clavichordist
@Clavichordist 4 года назад
Well said Alberto. You hit the nail on the head here. Why all the details if they're going to be ignored? I too asked questions and got the same answers or fluffy non-answers. Like you I too was told to play faster and faster, and while at University of Massachusetts Lowell it was worse as a professor called me out in a performance class for playing something too slow. (He still gave me an A though! :-) ) In 2017 I discovered Wim's channel while searching for some information on Scarlatti's sonata K. 146, and came across Wim explaining the performance and on a clavichord no less. I then watched other videos, subscribed and started lessons, and reaffirmed something that I was thinking all along.

I've altogether stopped listening to great acrobatic performers' recordings of Beethoven and Mozart because all of their works sound like musical jokes. Profoundly lyrical passages turned into a rushed blur of flourishes for cheap applause and to get more music into the same programme and so on. When I first learned of this research into historical tempi on this channel, I finally understood why. And it's all about misunderstandings about performance practice and tempo measurements creeping up long ago in clashes of generations...

Hello. I am an English professor and not a musician. I love your historically-concerned videos and interpretations! I also observe a troubling tone among your followers that is stoked (intentionally?) by videos like this: "Thanks for joining our team" "The modern ear cannot adjust" "A new European renaissance" seem all to be taken from a fascist lexicon. "Keep seeking the truth" is sound advice, unless it is used passive aggressively to mean "Keep seeking my truth". Good ideas do not need a movement, and fanaticism of any kind is corrosive to art. More videos, please! (Less propaganda.)
@AuthenticSound
@AuthenticSound 3 года назад
A fascist lexicon? Really, you're serious about this? There is something wrong with a team, building a movement based upon some different interpretation rules? A movement is by definition fascist you believe? Anyway, let me assume you didn't have your morning coffee yet :-)! You know, Wim, I've watched pretty much all your videos, and I have tracked down as many of the resources that you reference that I can get here in Canada. Your arguments are sound but! I'm still not convinced enough for a broad application like you apply it. Here's why: Opera. I'm a trained opera and vocal scholar and until these ideas can be applied in such a way as to show how a singer and for that matter a woodwind player could play at some of these tempi I think your theory while compelling, even preferable in most pieces esp. Mozart keyboard work, is wanting. Could you tackle vocal music, let's say Beethoven's Fidelio or Mass in C in an upcoming video?

I'm a bit puzzled. Already 20 years ago, when I was studying musicology, our professor talked passim about the double beat interpretation. Not as an established fact, but at least as a sound and serious and promising theory which could solve many problems with early metronomised music. Is it really still relatively unknown in the world of conservatoires? ô_O

Proverbs 2:6 For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. Here's a quote from chapter 1 of The book "Education" by Ellen g White- "Whatever line of investigation we pursue, with a sincere purpose to arrive at truth, we are brought in touch with the unseen, mighty Intelligence that is working in and through all. The mind of man is brought into communion with the mind of God, the finite with the Infinite. The effect of such communion on body and mind and soul is beyond estimate."
