No better way to test out a new set of wheels than on one giant rock garden. This ride wrung me out! Big ole climb and a WICKEDLY fun descent. I’m glad Kyle told me to add a few extra PSI for this meat grinder.

Welcome to Santa Barbara! That's our local favorite! I did a few youtube videos of our local trails and people hated the bell. Hard to explain it's a way of life here. As a hiker also, we love it.

Light rims definitely accelerate a little faster. And one thing I notice is they're quicker steering, too. I just got to A/B two identical bikes save one had aluminum and one carbon rims. Huge difference. Great riding, too. That's one gnarly trail. (And thanks for using the bell - keeps good relations with the hikers here in SB.) Are you gonna dare try Tunnel?

I've been using stainless travel coffee mugs for years. They're coke bottle shaped so fit in bottle cages. No leaks, but you do have to press a button for liquid to come out. They've kept my drinks cold on summer rides in Phoenix, if you need a testimonial.

Try drinking or eating beef root during the week and before you start riding . It will give you a huge performance boost , longer endurance ,stops cramps ,longer time to exhaustion , increase focus . You can drink as a juice or a punch. Do some research on beef root

Hey Brian, next time you make it down to Simi Valley there's a "hidden gem" tech trail just a further climb up Rocky Peak than all the popular spots. "Johnson's" on trailforks descends 3 miles from the east side of Rocky Peak into the Valley after a roughly 3 mile, 1,000ft climb. As a local, it's always been one of my favorites. It's marked as a blue on trailforks and is very chunky with creative line oppurtunities all the way down, it's very hard to be quick the first time you ride it, but satisfying to learn, and entertaining to see how everyone takes a different approach. You lose elevation a lot more gradually than steeper, higher risk trails in the area.so it feel worth it. Overall it has optional and less built up features than most trails on the west side of Rocky Peak. Don't overlook it's blue rating on trailforks, I really do believe it's a "flow rock garden" all the way down if there is such a thing. It's great for getting comfortable with being light on your bike and thinking on your feet. I would call it a "natural trail" but it was formerly Johnson Motorway back in the 30s or something and was at least a partially paved mining road. There's a couple spots where there's still old ashplant holding rocks together and remnants of equipment. The trail descends into a gated community, never had a problem with the guard letting us out. It's best done with a friend who can park their car on Poema Pl off the Topanga exit of the 118, the exit right after Rocky Peak to shuttle back. Not a bad ride back if you can't shuttle, but it's a narrow road with drivers that don't pay attention to get back. Another good blue on Rocky Peak is Chumash, I used to ride it 3x a week. The top is slow speed slabby tech, but low exposure. As it descends it gets faster with more exposure interspersed with technical features and loose, rocky, fast, corners. There's lots of little offshoot line choices towards the bottom along with a fork offering different choices at the last 500ft. Once you descend all the way to Flanagan, you can climb (shortly) back up the paved water tower access road to the left and descending back down "Memorial" trail to quickly get back to where you parked. It feels like you get a lot for what you put in, it just takes will power to keep pedaling past the easier to get to, more popular trails. The views of the San Fernando, Simi and Conejo Valley's are totally worth it. On very clear days you can see a sliver of ocean over the mountains out towards Malibu and all the way to Oxnard to the North.
