I watched From Dusk Till Dawn for the first time when I was six years old. My dad put it on for Halloween back in '96 and he was watching it alone in the dark while I hid in the hallway on my stomach. I remember it vividly. The view of the TV was slightly obscured on the bottom by the coffee table, because I was lying prone, and my dad would cough or shift positions sometimes and it would almost scare me into fleeing back to my room. But I eventually got lost in the movie and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Maybe it was because I was so far away from the television that it didn't seem as scary as it should've been to a six year old. Regardless, I told my friends at school that my dad let me watch From Dusk Till Dawn and they thought I was the witch's tit. That was the first time I got to describe a super violent movie to people. I felt like a goddamn king.

This movie is a bit of a "who's who" in genre history. The boys really went out of their way to get as many amazing faces involved as possible, a true nod to the history of horror and genre cinema. Michael Parks (was in a lot of old westerns, horror, and war films of the 60s-80s) Fred "The Hammer" Williamson (A classic Blacksploitation actor from Black Caesar, Boss N******, and The Inglorious Bastards (1978)), John Saxon (Enter the Dragon, Tenebrae, Nightmare on Elm Stree, Black Christmas) Tom Savini, Greg Nicotero, and Howard Berger (All worked on the special effects, but are also classic special effects masters of their time. Savini being Nicotero and Berger's mentor who worked on everything from Friday the 13th, to Dawn of the Dead, Maniac, and so many others. He even has his own special effects makeup school. Berger and Nicotero joined forced to create KNB EFX with Robert Kurtzman who all started on Day of the Dead and Evil Dead 2, they worked on the makeup for this film, and later many more. Nicotero has gone on to be a lead creator on shows like The Walking Dead and the Creepshow series) and I'm sure there are many others involved. This was a true love letter to the genre fans, which is why it's so many genres and plenty of absurdity mixed into one.

Hey for once it’s a GG review on a movie I know very well. It’s dated, it’s corny and I love it. One thing GG didn’t touch on is how badass Jacob is in this whole movie, he’s smart enough to not push Seth too far but he isn’t afraid to push back and it leads to some great interactions. I also wanna mention that hey, if you think you missed some foreshadowing that this would be a vampire movie there is none. It hits out of nowhere and creates amazing chaos. I just wanna shout out a few funny lines that GG couldn’t cover cus it would take all day. To finish off Carlos asking Seth if they were psychos. “Psychos don’t explode when sunlight hits them, I don’t care how fucking crazy they are.” When Seth discovers Jacob is Scott’s father. “How does that happen, you don’t look Japanese?” “Neither does he, he looks Chinese.” Finally when Danny Trejo is asked if they serve food in the Titty Twister. “The best in Mexico.” “Yeah, I kinda doubt that.” Danny’s face at this line is amazing. Go watch this movie, it’s fun. Watch with a friend and don’t mention vamps to see their face drop. It’s great, happy halloween folks.

My high school sweetheart asked me to take her to the new Clooney flick. I asked her what it was about. She said she didn’t know, but that she never questioned what my horror and sci-fi movies were about (she was right) so I agreed to take her. I figured it’d be some romcom or drama. Never have I been more surprised by a flick. I was immediately interested when I saw Clooney with a neck tattoo. The dialog was fast and funny, and the action was thoroughly enjoyable. Then all of a sudden…. VAMPIRES?!?!? That’s when she turned to me and asked if we could leave. I handed her my car keys and told her she could, but I wasn’t leaving. Never regretted that decision for a second. This remains one of my most favorite movies to this day.

Fun fact: Tom Savini(Sex Machine) did the special effects for this movie, that’s why they’re so amazing, especially for 1996. I’ve seen many Tom Savini horror movies but another one that stands out is Dawn of the Dead(1978). Though the movie is super outdated and kind of boring in my opinion, the special effects are really good for 1978. They aren’t spectacular or anything, but for 1978, that must’ve terrified people. And it did, because it’s rarely seen on tv, it was banned from being on television for 20+ years. Savini also has a small part as a biker in that movie lmao Edit: just wanted to clarify: a bunch of people are mentioning a lot of other Savini movies. Don’t worry, I’m fully aware he did those and he’s amazing in them. I was just trying to think of the oldest work I knew of :)

When my son was grown I showed him this movie. It blew his mind and he brought his fiancé to watch it for the same “wtf” factor. It’s so much fun telling people nothing about this movie before showing it to them. I might have lured my friend in by saying “it has a dick gun.” “…I’m intrigued, let’s go.”

I just saw a clip for this a couple days ago, the whole, "I don't believe in vampires, but I believe my own eyes, and what I saw was vampires," and put it to the top of my list. I've been wanting to see this one. 4:14 Thank you for regarding r••••• as a slur. Like it's certainly not the worst, but it is still stupidly common for RU-vidrs, grown ass men, to drop that one like they're still in middle school and they wanna look cool. It's extremely cringe. It's obviously worse when used in an actual ableist context, speaking of the developmentally disabled IRL, but casually using it as a synonym for anything you don't like (similar to "gay") still comes off as pretty uncool. And I'm not even trying to _necessarily_ criticize the movie, or the writers, or the actors, for using all the slurs they do. That can sometimes make sense in a work of fiction. Like you're not gonna see Sam L Jackson calling Leo DiCaprio racist for saying the n-word in Django Unchained. I just think it's important to be able to call things what they are. Like if this comment gets any attention, I'd bet anything that at least one dude will show up and tell me to stop censoring people. If you make any attempt at encouraging accountability and social progress on the internet (NOT canceling people), someone will be there quick to call you an easily-offended, snowflake, soyboy "libtard." That energy is ubiquitous. Honestly GG is an exemplar on how to have unabashed humor that's a little edgy without shitting on people for being different.

Some few movies get this greater than the sum of its parts elevation of a scene through a sort of difficult to express brief but perfect rhythm that developes between the music, movement, and dialog that just blow you away before suddenly dissipating as if it never happened in the first place. That bar scene is definitely one of them. The getting out of the car and picking up two aliens talking scene from the movie "Signs" (with Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, etc), is another.

You know what is odd but kinda funny to notice each of these Dusk Till Dawn movies start with what feels like the end of a different movie all together except for one of them so we have a ending of a brothers bank robbing flick and vampires show up at what is supposed to be the credits, a ending of western gang flick about about the same, and then you have a dollar store take on Oceans 11 actually beginning this time about half way in vampires
