Put a long sleeve shirt on, or a jacket, but leave your arms out of the sleeves. Put your arms across your chest, inside the jacket. Now, simulate a golf swing. The only way to sling those empty sleeves through, to a full finish, is to do what he’s describing in this video. You’ll notice that the sleeves lag behind, but go through with tons of speed. THIS is the “feeling” that he’s describing! Now, hit a ball with this feeling. The actual “hit” will feel delayed, just as he said, but the speed will feel effortless. You’ll also not even feel your divot, because the club is now accelerating through the hitting area, as it should. This is the same “sequencing” that pitchers use. They step towards the plate first, then turn the hips, then the torso, and chest, then the arm lags behind, and lastly the wrist releases. You can pretty much use any sport as an example, where speed, and power is needed. Throwing a football, hitting a forehand, hitting a baseball, etc. Golfers are afraid to be athletic, because the ball, and club face leave very little room for error. You have to get out of that, and learn to trust yourself.

After 50 years of theoretical & practical study of the golf swing & observing the teaching methods & reading the books of all of the great instructors, I rate this demonstration/explanation as the best ever analysis of the fundamental motions of the golf swing. This simplification/demonstration of proper golf swing body movement is definitely an “AH HA” golden nougat for every beginning golfer, and should accelerate the development of a better golf swing for every golfer. Thanks for making golf more fun.

Steve, I just got back from holiday and I have been keen to try your light bulb moment. Trying to get hips correct and not early release plus always being a sweeper your thought of being in a side on position was magic. I certainly need more work at it but everything seems to get into position without even thinking about it. To also hit ball turf was a bonus. Probably the BEST tip I have not only got from RU-vid but from the many coaches I have seen over many years. A big thanks !!

To fix hip stall, do chops with the cable machine at your gym. If you're materially wealthy, you can install a $2,000 Keiser Performance Trainer cable machine in your man cave but it requires an air compressor as it's air pressure resistance cable machine. It saves a ton of space, though.

However, when turning my hips on the downswing, I had a hard time keeping my eyes over the ball. They wanted to turn as well and I was hitting the ball (somewhat fairly well though) with my eyes already looking down the fairway. I would assume it's important to keep your eyes/head over the ball while turning your hips though? Any tips or suggestions on that?

Steve, Well tried this on the course today without going to the range first. I swung about 80% and was more accurate than i ever was and getting solid compression right off the first tee. With the driver on the downswing 1) pressure to the lead foot keeping hands back then turning the shoulder and being conscious of the side of the body inline with the arms at impact. I feel less effort, my lower back feels fine and it requires no small manipulation moves and these are big muscle moves for improved consistency. The difference i found between irons, hybrids and fairway woods compared with driver is my trail hand pushing through impact is delayed while keeping my hands inline with the "side" of my trail leg/body. With all other clubs i found when i tried to delay the hands at the side of my body I pulled my shots so I focused on turning lead hip and pushing with trail hand sooner in the downswing only and my strikes were straight and solid. Steve do you find your students pull shots with irons and fairway woods when trying to mimic what you do with driver?

my lightbulb moment was learning to let gravity control clubhead speed pitches and chips and just bringing club back further for longer shots. Hit 3000 practice chips. The lightbulb part was gravity controlling clubhead speed ensures the clubhead accelerates through the bottom of the swing every single time producing the exact same carry distance every time.
