This is a Disaster! My BIG Mistake! Montana Farming
In today's video, we start out filling the seed and fertilizer tanks to begin seeding. When we check the boots and shanks we find that some of them are plugged up! This is a disaster! Dad shows me how to get in and unplug them. Uncle Chris comes to help. I made a big mistake when I turned to start the next seeding row because I thought the drills were out of the ground but they weren't. My dad explains what I did wrong and that he and Uncle Chris have all made the same mistake. We get the drills unplugged and then we have a seed geyser when a hose disconnects. We all have to go into the rows to figure out where the drill stopped seeding so we can re-seed that part. I have learned a valuable lesson and I will try not to make that mistake again!!! My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

He or she who never makes mistakes probably isn't doing much worthwhile. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. How you handle the situation and what you learn from it is paramount. I am sure your dad also had to dig out a boot or two in his day and may well have to do it again. From what I see here you handled it like a pro and did not try to blame anything on anyone or anything else. Well done girl, you're a trooper. Cheers.

We all make mistakes, Kate. No- one gets up in the morning and thinks let's make a big stuff up. We made a mistake on our farm today, do not think we have ever done it before, it cost us real money. We dairy, the wash water got pumped into the milk vat with the milk. We had to dump all the milk. We learn from mistakes, in this day and age there does not seem to be much forgiveness. Always have problems to overcome.

I recently bought 3 half gallons of milk where I think this happened. It was very watery but enough milk you had to really look for the color difference. Had to dump all, very disappointing

To anyone except a farm kid or farmer, your Dad might seem a bit harsh in his constructive criticism. For the viewers that have never seen how little mistakes 'grow' thru the season and possibly even years later. The sections of the field that didn't get seed because of the plug not only will there be no crop to harvest, no crop allows weeds to flourish and spread as you know. This not only costs more in input $$ for weed control for this year but easily can keep popping up for years, just for starters. But I know with your background and upbringing you know all this and that he just wants you to learn from his mistakes and be a better farmer than him by the time you've farmed as long as he has, keep the faith 🙏👍🇺🇸

Hi Mr. McAvoy you are totally correct. This mistake may seem small but is cost us about $6000. That is a lot to me and I felt terrible about it. I have learned a lot and I don't want to do that again. Thank you for your great comment and kind words!!!!

Love the real world presentation in this video. No sugar coating. Nothing like learning at the school of hard knocks. And making a video while stressing out doubles the stress. Mistakes are meant to be make its what you learn from your mistakes, the way I think I see it you are its not going happen again because your a good student I've been a farmer and rancher all my life and your kind is very rare. As usual, I learned a lot of little details from your explanations. I like how your dad has you help when things go wrong, as it will help you remember, I know that it would help me remember. I also like how your dad logically went through identifying the problem and getting it fixed and backtracking to find when in the field the seeding stopped. I have made many, many mistakes. You showed very strong character how you responded when things didn't go as planned.

I love how your Dad expressed the seriousness of the situation, but also tried to reassure you that it could have, and probably has happened to every equipment operator at one time or another. I’m sure it isn’t easy for your father to be a boss, and a teacher, and most importantly, a dad. I think he balances all three titles very nicely.

OOPS !!! Things happen to all of us . I've commented before that your dad seems tough on you ,but if you really watch him and listen to his words ,people should understand he's a softy at heart . He wants you to learn and it's good that he holds you responsible for the mistakes that occur AND also get down and dirty in the field and equipment to repair the mistakes. Knowing the equipment and how it functions ( or doesn't when broken ) ,will be valuable for all your future farming endeavors . This happens to the best of us Kate! You have a great attitude towards learning from this. I highly recommend blockage monitors on your seed boots. They are bit pricey but they pick up blocks instantly and save having to go back trying to work out where it didn’t seed. We were hesitant to put these on our drill but since doing it was the best thing we ever did! Keep up the good work!

Your dad is like my dad used to be. Gets frustrated, thinks about it, then calms down and goes into education mode. It's because he knows what he's doing while you're learning what to do and he forgets that for a few minutes. Keep on plugging young lady, everyday is an education about something.

Wow - I´ve never seen your dad this upset before. I can understand the frustration though, these things are hard to figure out - but you´re also allowed one miss like this, just not every year ;). Remember that the only person who never made any mistakes, was the one who did nothing at all. Shake if off, remember the lesson and keep on farming - you´re doing great!

Hang In There Kate! Life happens and you are dealing with problems with a most understanding nature with your father! Beside, I never in my life (city person who loves the country) the complex nature of the machinery that Farmers have to handle. You and other farmers (on RU-vid as well) provide an in more depth of what needs to been done, to provide for a Nation. I agree. We love to grow flowers and that is great, but in the past during the 2nd World War (I am not that old. though) there use to be victory garden's which supplied the basic's. There are however, Urban Gardens which teach Urban children how to grow basic items. But I feel that Urban society fails to understand the great and intense work farmers have to go through everyday (even in the winter) to maintain incredible machinery, the changes in nature on a large scale and having to deal with the market and foreign growers.

Kate, don't be too hard on yourself, I'm 70+ years old and I still make mistakes. You are brave enough to admit your error and take responsibility for it. Also my experience is I often learned as much or more by the mistakes I made than when everything went smoothly. No one was hurt or injured so its a correctable with additional effort.

Hang in there Kate ! You are still WAY AHEAD of a lot of your peer group !!! You are out there learning as you are doing, and contributing to your family, farm, society in general ! You are admirable, as many young women would have refused to get their hands dirty, would have NOT accepted any criticisms and definitely would have run off crying because they’re feelings were hurt ! I love your videos, I also love how well you take criticism and use it to help you learn and improve. Too many young people today do not take criticism well and fall apart at the first sign of it. Hi Kate,great video,I used to operate a similar rig in Australia years ago (Steiger Tiger, with a 65 ft seeder on,no such thing as auto steer back then either), there's a lot going on with something that size and easy to make a mistake.Love how some people think your Dad is grumpy,mine was too but years later I realised what a great job he'd done getting me to be the best I could be,wish more parents would stop trying to be friends with their kids and just be parents,seem's like he's already raised a good daughter,you'll go far. We use to hire small little people and they lived in the seed drill to keep things running. Once in awhile one would get planted but that was good we would have more little people next year. Have a great day.

These things happen from time to time in farming. You are learning every time you make a mistake so don’t be too hard on yourself. Farmers are constantly learning better ways to do things and mistakes happen. You’re doing a great job, and you are lightening the work load for your family. Have a great thanksgiving!

Hi Miss Kate! Once again a great video! I love the way you stand up and take responsibly for your mistakes. Life is sometimes tough and none of up are perfect! We all make mistakes. that is a part of the learning process. I loved your Fathers attitude about the situation. He could have put down on you and taken you off of the tractor, but instead, He just helped you fix the problem and you learned a valuable lesson. I like the way hi handed you a tool and said " Here get down there and clean it. It might have seemed like he was being hard, but you learn better when you fix your own mistakes. There's an old saying: If a man can say he never made a mistake, it's because you can bet he was never put in charge of anything important. I work on x-ray machines. The first time I had to replace an x-ray tube, I mis-wired it, and it was ruined on the very first test shot I tried to make. I called my boss, told him how I messed up, and asked him if he wanted my resignation. He said, "Heck no! I just spent $15,000.00 bucks teaching you what not to do! Just don't ever do it again." And I haven't. Because of that mistake all those years ago, I check those darn wires five times over before I ever turn the system back on. The people who keep making the same mistake over and over, who never learn from their mistakes, those are the ones you have to watch out for. Props to your Dad, too. He told you what you did wrong, the extent of the mistake, and how to keep it from happening again. That's how you do it.

Some people operate the GPS system to follow every second row line to make turns easier, just a suggestion that may work for your seeding. Kate, my grandfather always told me its better to go forward and stumble than stand still and grumble, only a person who never does any work doesn't screw up, it's not a big deal just fix the mess up and keep moving, look as long as you wake up every morning and hit the floor running to work NOBODY can ever hold you down, your dad loves you very much and he wants to see you make him proud!!

Hello Kate don't worry, what happened is not as serious as you think, but it's normal because we all make mistakes and considering that in less than a mounth you have pratically learned how to run a very expensive equipment is a lot. Probably if I had been in your place I don't know if I had obtained the excellent results you have achieved so far.
