I also recommend with KVM, to get one with EDID emulation. That will keep your PCs from thinking you are disconnecting and reconnecting monitors when you switch. I've had trouble with icons moving or resolutions getting changed when switching. Also makes switching faster generally.
I have had several 2 port KVM Switches for PS2 keyboards and mice for years to connect several computers together and I love that it cuts down on the keyboards and monitors... 2 years ago I bought a 4 HDMI/USB as everything is now HDMI/USB for the most part now days. I bought a TESmart it was $89 us and it works great. If I have a computer that I turned off and I'm on another computer screen, then I turn that computer on, it automatically switches the monitor/keyboard to that booting computer... Awesome. Not sure if the one you have works this way but if I hit 'Scroll Lock' 2 times it beeps and then I hit 1 or 2 or whatever computer I want to use or hit the button on the remote or on the switch... Bruce could not function without a KVM switch or 3. Lol I have a Mirabox Capture card/box and it works great. If I get another 4 port KVM Switch I will give Mirabox a look... Sure Live stream the U4 build, I like to watch the pitfalls and anguish... Lol Just kidding. I'm sure all will be ok... Thanks for the video and congrats on the Switch... LLAP
Nice video on a topic I was researching. Many people making the switch from Windows to Linux (like me) still need our Windows machine for work and still enjoy certain aspects of the OS. Having to set-up another monitor seems counterproductive. This solves the problem! Thanks!
Thanks for the video, it is really helpful. Can we get an updated version, if there are newer solutions or newer better KVMs? Also can we get something about having a PC in 1 room but being able to axxess it in another room as well, similar ro Linus' home setup, but maybe a bit of a cheaper solution using a HDMI extender or something similar? What about a solution for having 2PCs sharing a monitor, keyboard and mouse in room 1, so they could use a KVM, but them having one or both of those PCs accessible in other rooms on a totally different monitor, keyboard and mouse?
I worked up a slightly different solution. I have Devices that need to share keyboard and mouse via USB. The interesting thing for me is I have two older Acer monitors that have multiple HDMI or display port connections on them. So I grabbed a Uline USB switcher from Amazon and connected the keyboard and mouse to it. I then made a USB cable connection to each of the machines. The USB switcher will automatically change over to an input it detects. same thing with each of the two monitors I am using, So if I am using one machine at a time I am good. Everything automatically changes over. It's a bit of a cheap kludge but it works well enough for now
I use a smaller usb2 switch that I mounted underneath my desk so I can switch between my two computers, a laptop and desktop, without having a separate keyboard and mouse.
$119.00 usb 2.0 only. I need it but it cost more than my raspberry pi 3b+. A lot when I am on social security. I’ll keep looking. I wish companies donated used keyboards, mouse, old monitors. Or sell them cheap.
Does this work with consoles as well or only with pcs? Just asking because i would like to use the same monitor and peripherals for both my pc and xbox.
Several computers to one keyboard, mouse, and monitor? I have small space but use 5. SBC Linux computers. I cannot power but 1 at a time. I need to connect SBC NAS AS WELL. I HOPE YOU PUT LINK TO IT IN NOTES. I need to redesign “limited space” for room to run all computers, wiring, need used 24 port switch refurbished, need good used cat5 cable. Might need mini rack home made as racks cost to much.
Is there a particular reason you don't use the ultrawide as the primary display? I can see why for gaming as ultrawide isn't really supported but for productivity I can see it being helpful.
In his particular case, the ultrawide is 1080p (2560x1080) and the main monitor is 1440p. He would loose some pixels on the y axis if using the ultrawide one as his main. But I agree it's looks strange to see an ultrawide rotated like that 😆
my kvm has a remote, can switch sound and/or video, even has a multiview (4 inputs at once) the shown kvm removes the primary screen so all gets dumped on the vertical monitor, that is strange, using windows ?
I have not seen any for 2 monitors let alone 3. :-P Oh! I sure they are somewhere in the world, but at a Grand each or more... Lol I have 2 to monitors on mine one computer, The one monitor is static while the others changes to the other systems but that is ok. I just start a movie and have it on that monitor... LOL LLAP
