I just purchased the ser5 version of Beelink. I got it for writing, some light video editing, and overall internet perusing. I was surprised by the fact it could handle my games, although not as good as the GTR6 version I've seen reviewed. It has also been great at grinding out Orthos for my XPlane behemoth box that sits below my desk. I was shocked at this mini device's performance. I have been into computers since the early 1980s. So, to see such a small form factor actually perform well is exciting. As to your question at the end. I think we'll all be going mini and/or thin notebooks in five years or less. AMD and Intel are at the point they can integrate GPU tech that games well and computes great. NVidia coming out and announcing they are essentially focused on the high end market is a good indicator they see it is coming soon. I'm sure they saw it when they tried to purchase ARM. Now, they need to focus on compute power for big data corporate centers and engineering programs. There will always be the small enthusiast segment that will build the PC that can run War scenarios and costs more than their house. I'm a retired software and computer engineer, so I get it. However, I think we're quickly approaching the less is more paradigm and it will be glorious.

I have always defended the traditional Desktop from people who say it's dying - it won't be dead for a very very long time but man, am I impressed with these small form factor machines and the GPD pocket laptop style ones. I am blown away by their specs and their ability to not melt and I can deffo see myself tinkering inside these small boxes just the same as I do now with my big desktop machine. I guess just because they are getting smaller doesn't mean it takes away the DIY ability, just changes it. Noctua best get making some even smaller brown fans so I can get paranoid about the placement of them in my 6 inch gaming powerhouse!

Sticking with ATX motherboard form factor. More flexibility, easier to repurpose and easier to work on to replace individual components. With room for multiple expansion cards, more can be done with it. I don't mind the towers. Mini-pc's are very limited in what they can do but I see the need for them.

I like ATX and uATX because indeed the easy to fiddle with factor. And you can overclock CPU's on them best (I love the extreme all core overclocks while the PC is still not loud with 14cm fans). All these mini PC's have no room for cooling down much so processors on heavy tasks quickly go back in speed when too hot.

For what it's worth, I recently replaced my Ryzen 3600 desktop with a Morefine S600 from AliExpress - it's brilliant. Power ceiling of ~90W, so no more space heater in my little office, and the i7-1270p is more than capable of everything I need to do with it. Even better, the experience in Linux (I'm a developer) is _much_ smoother - all of the desktop environments render with far fewer stutters than the previous machine, even though it had a GTX 970 in it. The only downside is the fan; it whines a lot more when the machine's under load, which is something I plan to fix by printing a 120mm fan shroud to replace the bottom panel, possibly even removing the CPU fan and ducting it over the heatsink. Under normal circumstances, though, it's absolutely silent.

So good I had work by the U59 model with more ram and storage to replace the 10 1/2 year old AMD Six Core FX machine as the office PC. It looks very much like an All-in-One concept but with the computer part detachable from the monitor part so you can upgrade the computer without as much fear of breaking the monitor when it is mounted to the back of said monitor. My main question will be how does it effect the monitor when mounted to the back of it when it is running at 100% for lets say a rendering task?

Dude! SAME! I have been using a GTR5 w 5900HX 16-thread mini-box as a "temporary" PC after needing to move for an unexpected medical emergency several months ago (my daughter has a failing liver and needs a transplant). I didn't want to carry the water-cooled PC on the airplane for that first trip, so I packed a laptop and a Beelink that I was using as a Linux box. I swapped the NVMEs, loaded up Windows, and it has been my daily-driver ever since. Once I signed a lease and landed in the new town semi-permanently, I was able to have my desktop shipped over to me. However, I find that I really only used it for heavy gaming or heavy video editing. And ... that's maybe 10% of what I use my PC for in any given week. So, I have ended up streaming via Steamlink most of my games, and I only play it natively when I edit video or play a detailed FPS-perspective game (I had a recent fling with Tiny Tina's that was best directly on-the-box). This has meant that I could also "declutter" both my "work box" (the Beelink, now) and my "game box" to the better performance of each. I've been super-impressed. It isn't a world-beating PC by any stretch, but for what I paid for it? Total bargain.

Mini desktops will rule the corporate IT world, but at home we're all gonna be using laptops with single USB docks. We're already seeing that world somewhat, but we're still limited by bandwidth limitations of USB-C and thunderbolt, but the next generation should help that shift. I pretty much already use this setup, but I have to use multiple cables because I don't have enough bandwidth on my dock to power G-Sync with the resolution and refresh rate that I'm running, but honestly if you're running a light load then there's docks that do power delivery, 4k/60hz, 2.5g networking, multiple USBs over a single USB-C connection to the host machine. Desktops will only be for the hardcore users like they are right now.

If either performance, cooling power or both are of the utmost priorities, desktops will always rule over the mini-PCs and laptop markets. Yes, every segment will get faster, but there will be limitations on how much a laptop and mini-pc will cool down for reliability whenever top performance is desired.
@bitwize
@bitwize Год назад
No. It's the same principle of how soldered-in RAM is faster than DIMM RAM. Ultimately, performance will have to be traded off against upgradeability, and as powerful mini PCs get cheaper, upgradeability will lose as you can just swap out your mini PC for new, for less than it would cost to uograde your tower's parts, and get a machine that's faster than your tower in the process.
@jediknightdiscomike22
@jediknightdiscomike22 Год назад
@@bitwize I disagree with the statement about upgradability and performance. Desktop cpu and gpu will always outperform a laptop, even if the desktop top cpu/gpu is two to three generations behind the latest laptop / mini pc cpu/gpu. There will always be a market for upgrading parts when it comes to performance for the desktop market. There will always be a market for portability - laptops and mini pcs. All three designs do have a purpose. Laptops and mini pcs are not designed to be as fast as the desktop top tier or second top tier cpu gpu combo. The cooling performance and dissipation of hot air is just not there for the mini versions when it goes against a desktop. The laptop and mini pcs generally use the mobile cpu and a mobile version of a gpu (for those laptops and mini pc's having a dedicated gpu). You can go and try this experiment yourself. I have a laptop with dedicated gpu and top of the line cpu, and a desktop that has a top cpu in the same gen as the laptop, but the gpu is 3 to 4 generation behind the laptop gpu. There is no comparison. Desktop with a top cpu in the same generation family as the mobile laptop cpu and generations behind stand alone gpu in the dekstop beats the laptop. You can see this when opening up a new window. Everything is just instantaneous with the desktop. Laptop has performance but it does not keep pace with a desktop cpu gpu combo.
@jediknightdiscomike22
@jediknightdiscomike22 Год назад
@@bitwize but two things I do agree with you you on. Laptops and mini pcs will get faster, which I had mentioned in my statement. But they will only take you so far when performance and cooling power is concerned. And soldered-on Ram is faster than dimm. But this is regulated to laptops and mini pcs when compared to dimm Ram. Desktop dimm is another story though. I would not compare laptop ram whether soldered on or dimm Ram versus desktop Ram. I would give the advantage to desktop ram. Remember if things get too hot in a laptop or mini pc, the solution is to throttle back performance. Same with desktop, but it is to a different degree.
@jediknightdiscomike22

You can squeeze out more preformance with boosting up the TDP, your gaming section shows a mhz around 2000mhz when it should be 2400mhz but it can't deliver more when it set to 35 or 45w, at 65w it will be maxed out without the cpu taking a preformance hit since the igpu and cpu share power.

So not to replace my desktop pc but to cover just about everything that does not need a dedicated GPU. When not gaming I put the main rig to sleep and wake up the Beelink. Or if I want to just search something like a map for a game or a walk through. Oh I forgot to say I also run 3x 32" 1440p monitors with multiple inputs on each. So I can have a map up on one and the walk through on another without taking focus or resources from the main rig.

Totally agree - heat is a MAJOR FACTOR when comparing laptop/mini pc compared to the desktop. See my comments in this thread somewhere.

@@jediknightdiscomike22 The industry is trying to make things break so then you have to do call trade it in and buy another piece of crap... Example. Apple selling these m1 computers. Telling yah. You can take an old intel 2011 iMac and change out the video card from a only gaming PC laptop. Then flash it and use opencore legacy patcher and then have a fully working up to date Mac with Monterey os. So the solution is for these companies is to force a product cycle with actually making the stuff break. Pathetic. The older computers are literally better because you can upgrade and or be able to fix them. You can't fix these Little boxes. But if all you need is a few years then ok. But I ain't buying a non upgradable over heated box for like 1500 bucks. This one seemed reasonably priced for what you get. Under 700 would be doable for having the right specs and say last for 3 maybe 5 years. On the other hand. The only school box last forever.. literally. You can change the power supply and change parts. Is what it is. Depends on what your needs are and what you are willing to pay imo.

I just received my Beelink GTR6 yesterday! I'm planning to replace my tower desktop with this unit. So far I've just watched some videos but I'm impressed with the performance and small form factor. I'll be replacing Windows with Linux after I test the box on Windows for a few days. I haven't upgraded or modified any of my towers for several years now. So moving to the mini-pc form factor won't be an issue. I'm not a power user.

I'm all for the new form factor with one caveat - external PCIe for a video card in its own enclosure. The USB 4 thunderbolt external GPU enclosures aren't going to cut it with modern gaming GPUs. Just give me 8 PCIe lanes - not even asking for a full 16... just 8, and I'm sold. I can run a simple PCIe ribbon cable extender and build my own enclosure for my card if I have to. lol.

These mini PCs are almost there. A little bit more power or a little less price and they will be replacing towers and laptops for many people, myself included. For now budget gaming laptops seem to make the most sense to me. They cost basically the same but perform better and come with a display, a battery, and input devices.
@itsdaddymagic
@itsdaddymagic Год назад
nah the price is about the same but u lose about 10-30% performance that being said being able to game on a train or plane or just grab my laptop and go is way more important to me than the perfomance loss
@jayjayhooksch1
@jayjayhooksch1 Год назад
@@itsdaddymagic That's certainly not the case in my country, Canada, or in the US from what I can tell. Budget gaming laptops perform moderately better than these mini PCs with integrated GPUs, for roughly the same price. For example, my laptop is a 5600h with a 3050 and it performs better than this mini PC for gaming. My laptop was also within 50$ of the price range of this mini PC.

i think it really depends on what kind of user you are. an every day user who goes in for the office applications, web browsing and casual gaming; yeah this format of pc's 100% has you covered. your warzone 2 footage unfortunately had tearing from the recording of your monitor which kind of gives the impression the gr6 isn't quite up to the task of running warzone... rest assured, it is. i have the minisforum hx90, which has the ryzen 9 5900hx (a less performant apu), and it can comfortably handle warzone 2. and the mw2 campaign for that matter. i was considering the gr6 when i was shopping, btw. i went with the minisforum hx90 because it has 2 display port connections and 2 hdmi. though if you really want additional displays, it's much better to go in for some portable usb displays. and while the price isn't always low, the power consumption is - and that's an increasingly important priority. and final tangent, if you really want low power computing, go for one of the current generation of arm sbc's like khadas or rockpi. i recommend the khadas edge 2 pro. when pressed (i tested mine by simultaneously running multiple live cctv streams, multiple server software instances, and playing eve online in the web browser), it only draws ~9w. cool video, man. thanks!

I don't think that those will replace full sized desktops, where expandability is their main feature(as size of the case will grow either way if you need to add more drives or an expansion card), However I can see those absolutely crushing mini-itx builds(thought they may still have their last laugh with socketed APU's and desktop ram slots) and basic gaming PC's in the near future.

If a Mini PC and a external GPU could could attach to each other through PCIE slot like a cartridge into a game console, instead of using a thunderbolt connection then everyone would buy a Mini PC. Imagine a small portable PC that you can carry everywhere, and that quickly can attach a powerful graphics card when it needs to perform like a desktop PC.

As much as I like Mini pc's my only reservation is the serviceability. With my desktop PC I can easily replace component parts like the PSU or Graphics card should either go faulty. All-in-on units usually mean that you have to return the entire unit for replacement/repair.
