If you remember in mansion he said "fear came into my house years ago, I let him in, he must have picked a room and got comfortable and settled in" and in this song he makes an extremely clear call back to that. Also in mansion he says "Is it me or the fear talking? I don't know anymore" and in this song fear says "Is it me or the fear talking? What a dumb question" making fun of Nate. To this day this is still one of his best songs, a whole masterpiece. I definitely recommend listening to it again with this new knowledge, you'll like it even more

You had an interesting take, and I could see how you would go to pain. His fear is a derivative of all of the abuse and emotional trauma that he experienced so in a way it is, but at this point he is still trying to process the base layer which is specifically the fear and anxieties. The lyrics are a conversation between fear and himself that slowly switches the dominant personality culminating in fear being buried. At least that is how I took it.
