There is a real bridge that looks like this, and it's in London! This time our world tour is visiting the most complicated build I have attempted so far in Poly Bridge 2, trying to recreate London's Rolling Bridge.
One of the developers has been kind enough to donate some Poly Bridge 2 steam keys, and I have hidden TWO of them within this video! Be sure to keep your eye's peeled throughout if you want a chance of winning! If you do happen to find one and redeems it successfully, please let us know in the comments and use a timestamp so others can see what to look for next time! Yes, there will be a next time!
As always, if you enjoy the video please give it a LIKE and subscribe to the Real Civil Engineer channel and enable notifications so you can be the first to know when I post future videos! Thanks!!

POLY BRIDGE 2 GIVEAWAY!!! The amazing guys at Dry Cactus have generously given me a handful of Steam codes for this game to give away! The first TWO of which are hidden somewhere in this video! Good luck to whoever finds and redeems them first, if you're not lucky enough this time keep an eye out for my next two Poly Bridge 2 videos- I will add a comment similar to this one so you know whether to look for them or not! Peace, Love and Bridges!

As a suggestion, maybe make the other codes not matter on when your people can view and make them an actual drawing or something. Hiding them as codes in the video makes it a seem a bit unfair to those who can't be watching RU-vid waiting for the video upload. My suggestion would be a drawing based on comments a phrase or something within the first 24 or 48 hours after posting. That gives more of your community a chance to enter, not just the few who are 'first'. None the less, continue with the good work. The algorithm seems to be in your favor and your subscriber count is growing rapidly. Love the videos and considering buying the game to see if a mechanical engineer can beat your scores without being cheesey.

@ladyalicent705

He forgot that what was a thing?
@scorinth
@scorinth 2 года назад
@@ladyalicent705 Uhhh... boy, it's been a while since since I took those classes, so I'd probably get an exact definition wrong. But it's a position of your thing where the usual math you'd use to analyze the forces on and motion of the object break down and suddenly it can move in unexpected ways. Forces and/or movements tend to get *really* big around these points. When the bars in a truss that are supposed to form a triangle or square collapse down to form straight lines, the truss suddenly gets really floppy and falls down. This is a big part of mechanical engineering because we're trained to make things that move, so we always have to think about these singularities and deal with them. Civil engineers typically *don't* have to deal with them (because if your bridge can move enough to cause one to happen, it's already well beyond "broken"), and this video shows it. :D

Man, I've been watching your videos and it's been interesting to see the struggles of a Civil Eng in certain applications which I would consider second nature as a Mech/Aero Eng. This bridge for example. I immediately knew how you needed to solve the problem, but it took a long time for you to solve it. You make me want to try out this game myself since I'm coming from a totally different style of Engineering.

Dude, your channel is growing so incredibly fast! For your bridge world tour, I can recommend the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam as it's incredibly iconic to people in our country. If you want to test your patience: the Zeeland bridge will quite test it. Oh, and perhaps the Muntbridge in Utrecht would be fun, but I don't think hydraulics work that way.

at 13:30, I think the reason the real bridge has that shape is to provide a mechanical lock that increases the load capacity of the bridge in the event of hydraulic failure. Basically a load in the center of the bridge will try to compress the already fully compressed hydraulic, while a small bend in the other direction would tend to put the hydraulic in tension. Basically when the bridge is down you're supporting the bridge from both ends passively. The motion would work just as well if it was a straight line, just make the hydraulic not expand enough to make the linkages overlap. Maybe even better, because the loose end wouldn't try to dip below the ground as the bridge starts to lift up.

@outragedgamer1410
@outragedgamer1410 3 года назад
When two pieces of material over-lap, they form a mechanical lock and they are unable to unlock by the games standards. Hence why your first couple designs did not work. The hydraulics pushed the two pieces of steel so much that they over-lapped, locking themselves in place, and unable to un-lock.

Very cool, the problem you were having and eventually fixed by keeping the 'triangle' with the pistons was that you were creating an indeterminate geometry. By putting everything in a straight line, you gave the short pieces three options when the piston contracted: rotate left together, rotate right together, or split and return to their original position. The last option was made even less likely by the creation of the joint upon closing. Allowing those two arms to not become coincident (keeping the triangle shape) made sure the geometry was determinate and it would return to its original position.

Its still hard to do, but his main issue was that when his bridge was rolled up, his piston was in line with the pivoting bars in the bridge. When he went to push it back over, one linkage would rotate outward instead of inward and this makes the bridge try to roll up even more. Hard to write it out. Easier to draw.
