Always appreciate your "rants" definitely makes it feel like a closer more realistic connection with your audience as consumers. The whole tech industry is absolutely insane right now and this is a great video that showcases it. The amount of available products is absolutely insane and when you factor in the cost of everything it's mind blowing. I'm in the predicament of wanting to upgrade, but the whole cpu/mobo/ram issues make me worry, I just want to wait it out a bit longer until more of these odd issues are straightened out. Also factor in a new gen GPU costs slightly less than what I built my entire PC for.....

Glad to hear the nod to motherboards as the other half of the "paralysis by indecision" issue. I personally find pairing a good MB with my choice of CPU and GPU far more challenging than picking out the CPU and GPU in the first place.

Thank you Jay! I run a local computer business. I have been feeling the same frustrations as you. Trying to communicate all of these things quickly and easily to a customer can be frustrating. Developing new ways of approaching build philosophy has been my goal. I finally found my way of doing it. By figuring out what monitor they have and budget. If they are aiming for 1080p 144Hz, then it isn't difficult. If they want to run something with higher resolution or refresh rate, then I adjust my target accordingly. It simplifies it for them but still complicates it for me. Finding the right balance. Keep up the "boomer rants" because it makes me not feel alone in this.

I think another issue not addressed in the video (at least up to 20:20) is that modern games seem to be so terribly optimised that going overkill on specs is a way to try and counter it

On one hand Jay amazing talker knows his stuff scriped well segways are perfect and on the other hand Phil with his amazing editing knowing exactly were to cut stuff keeps the video moving. Both together makes an incredible team! Keep it up!

This is why I'm in favor of future proofing. I got a 5900x and I have no plans to upgrade for the next 5 years at least. I might even skip the entire AM5 platform.

There's a bunch to know, to say it gets confusing at times is an understatement! No worries about timing of videos, family health is most important here.This video talking about health hit close to home for me. Long story as short as possible: While researching possible build parts and upgrade paths for my desktop I came across your channel. I'm rocking a cyberpower PC with FX6300, 8GB, and a FX580 8GB 2048. I'm blessed to have this PC that allows me to play some great games, but its starting to show its age playing newer demanding games. My wife, who got into gaming this past year, is using a i7 8550, 8Gb, and GTX 1050 4gb notebook.This notebook is starting to show its age with newer games also. We just took her notebook apart for its 1st cleaning & thermal paste CPU & GPU applications. Good time we had. Now we're both playing on 1080p monitors, so we don't need monster PC's that can run 1440P & 4K. We know all this because of people, like you, who share your wealth of knowledge/experience. Thanks again! That knowledge is helping us narrow down our choices while weighing options. We' can't afford mistakes on a very limited budget (I'm sure many understand this). My wife's desktop will be our 1st build and watching her enticement from videos like yours brings a smile to my face. This may be cheezy to some, but after she became wheelchair bound, she's retreated from the world. She barley leaves house because its to painful to do so. Anytime something sparks a light in her, I take notice because everyone needs a spark to keep their spirits up. Watching PC videos and gaming has been a sweet spark for her. The only reason I haven't lost my mind among the myriad SKUs we have right now is because I've been watching tech channels for years, otherwise it'd confuse me way more than it did when I built my first PC. And then every time people ask me about PC building and I gave them some recommendations, they would be back with more questions I wouldn't expect at all. I can't even imagine being in Jayz's position and reading a bunch of emails about that every day lol

I can totally relate to this. I was running a Ryzen 3600, 16gb DDR4, X570 motherboard and had a temp 1660 Super while I waited for the GPU chaos to end. The new lines dropped and just added so many new lines for seemingly no real reason, so I just upgraded to a 5800X3D, 6800XT and doubled my ram all on sale or in auctions. Suits all my 1440p needs, saved a ton of money and beyond 4K absolute peak specs, I'm not sure who needs all the confusing latest stuff lol

The good news is all these variations provide mountains of content for creators like you guys I also like how your advice boils down to "pick a reasonable budget and buy whatever's in stock and you're gonna have a good CPU"

Hi Jay, hope you are all doing well. Have been a long time viewer and have built 5 systems since watching one of your earlier pc build vids. I have 3 of them currently, my latest is an intel 12900K on a Z690 platform, I undervolted both cpu and my 3080 12gig based on your earlier vids. I guess what I am saying here is that we rely on your reviews and honest output so we don't have to stand in front of a shelf full of parts to see what buy, we generally have it boiled down due to watching countless comparisons and reviews. BTW I am from Australia and live 180 klms from the nearest city, all of my parts are purchased online so your reviews etc are most appreciated. Cejay

I love that you made this video, i mean my 8th gen i5 is still putting in the work on a bunch of modern games and still providing an enjoyable and playable experience, I may end up upgrading to a 9th gen i7 and a 2080ti and call it a day on the 1440p beast

My 2017 custom-built PC finally crapped out 3 weeks ago and I thought okay just get another one based on my needs. Yeah, it was way more complicated than 5 years ago. I caved and got the Mac Studio Max. My first Mac after all Windows-based PCs since the 90s. Not a fan of the Mac OS but the little thing is fast and efficient. I wanted HDMI 2.1 and a few other upgrades but the Max was on sale for $1500 at Costco with a 90 day return policy. Custom build PCs were coming in at $3k - $3800. Does anyone have some Ideas on a comparable PC build would be? HDMI 2.1, Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a 2.5 G ethernet port. I want to edit 4k 120fps work on a nice 32" 4k display. I'm coming from an AMD Ryzen 7 1800x on an MSI B350M Gaming Pro, GTX 1060, 32 GB Ram. SATA SSD.

Jay's community service! Super valid information as usual! I for example recently upgraded from R5 2600 to R7 5700x. I am using a B450 motherboard so going 5800 or 5900 wouldn't be a great idea probably. Also I realize that the R5 5600 would have gotten me about 98% of the performance for gaming but the price difference was small and I play around with virtualization so I can appreciate the extra cores. With that being said, it took me a week or so researching to make sure this is the proper way for me to go. When you put the new sockets in the equation is becomes Hell! I am really sad for people that are not technical because, a lot of them will end up paying a hefty premium for stuff that they don't use, but I guess that is marketing. Anyway, at least with the competition we get some pretty great CPU-s for not a whole lot of money!

I just switched over to PC a few months ago with a prebuilt and I'm already looking into changing parts out and making it more my own and I've got to say, I really appreciate your channels and others for sifting through all the marketing bs and laying it out there for us. If it wasn't for you and others like you I'd of definitely been way too overwhelmed to make the switch.

Hi, Jay. I just wanted to thank you and your team for the content you make. I'm a completely fresh newbie to this PC-building world since the last month when I decided that I wanted to make a PC that could fullfil my average gaming needs and I've been trying to understand as best as I can what parts do I need without exaggeranting, the names, technologies, terminologies, tiers and all that stuff. In that process, I've seen dozens of channels and videos and yours is truly one of the best I've found so far. I love how consumer-oriented you guys are in your reviews, how blunt and honest you guys are when saying things like "If you're just gonna do X in your PC, then you don't need Y super high-end stuff. In fact, almost nobody needs it, a Z component is gonna be more than enough". I also like how clear and straight to the point you guys are. You guys have been a life-saver for me this past month when trying to understand how PC building works and in understanding what things I really need and what others, despite being a plus, might not be worth the extra money or would be excessive for my needs. Also, your humor is catchy, made me laugh a couple of times. So it's really relieving to hear that even you experts are starting to have problems with how overly complicated PC parts categories are getting. Sometimes I found myself wondering if this was really convoluted or maybe I was jus "too dumb" because of how much I was struggling to understand what parts I should pair with what parts in order to get the most out of my build for the right price and without wasting potential or overinvesting in things that are overkill for what I need. So, yeah, thanks a ton guys for your clear advices and, most of all, for your bluntness and your honesty, always putting the consumer first and trying to make things easier to understand for everybody while saving us from this greedy companies. Hopefully health issues have cleared up for you guys! You guys taking the time to talk about it in this manner is really helpful. It ties in very well with how I go about helping friends pick out parts. I usually direct them towards the mid-to-high end of the mid-grade (5600x or 5800x as Ryzen CPU examples), and then from there make changes based on workload, how much time they want before upgrading, etc. I also try to keep them in the middle ground of motherboards. Like yeah you can buy the $400 motherboard like I did, or save $200 to put towards a bigger SSD and a step up on the GPU side from a 4070 to a 4080.

Thank you for this video. It was very helpful and time to do research about this stuff. Please make more videos like this for motherboards with details like the CPU sockets and what type of rams it can take and how much power it needs to support all other perriferals etc. and maybe in the future another video about GPUs. Keep up the good work you are doing for all of us :)

Yup I stayed with the Ryzen 5000 series. I've got 5800X3D paired with the 6800XT and I do a lot of PC/VR games and it's a beast of a combo. Thanks for giving out the advice cause that helped me out a lot.

You've perfectly described my frustrations with shopping for a new system. I'm finally upgrading my ageing 4690k platform that I've been sat on since 2014. I came to the conclusion that it was pointless and far too expensive trying to buy anything current gen and have decided to get either a 5600 or 12400F platform as the price of last gen CPUs are much more reasonable and either of them will be a monster upgrade over what I have

I'm glad you're talking about this because honestly I didn't really know where to start with my personal rig? I just got the ryzen 7 5700X and called it good. As for Intel...looking at all of them really confuses me so hearing you break it down helped a lot.

As a person who's going to build his first gaming PC next week, decision paralysis was definitely a big issue for me, especially when choosing a motherboard, I was so horribly confused on which mobo to get (I went with a B660 Steel Legend on sale that was cheaper and had more features than the one I had picked out). I know I definitely overspent on a few things, and that was after a friend was trying to encourage I get a nicer system with a 3060 Ti and an i5-13600K saying that I needed it (I settled with an RX 6650 XT and a i5-12400F). I was surprised when learning, generally speaking, that "X part is better than Y part" does not mean that X part is bad, and is perfectly suitable for most games. This is coming from a guy with a shitty laptop with a GTX 1060 in it and an i7-8750h that runs at like 170 degrees (F) on any game made in the last 15 years (the GPU isn't as bad, but that CPU really holds it back because of those temps), but I can still play even modern games, granted I turn basically all the settings down. Even now, before I build my system, I have that nagging feeling in the back of my mind of "did I really choose the right parts?", even if i've soaked in a lot of reviews and comparisons and benchmark videos to see that it's not really a huge deal, and basically anything will be a big step up from what I have. tldr; I'm an inexperienced little baby when it comes to PC building, but you really don't need the best of the best unless you're an enthusiast with a big budget. Especially if you do your research and learn how you can get the most out of your parts, even if that tinkering may be frustrating at first. (also Jay if you see this you're a lifesaver for making a video on my SSD, the Samsung 980 Pro, so I know to immediately check and update it if I got the bad model. No wonder it was on sale when i was gifted it lmao)

Great in-depth video on all the different CPU's out there. Jayz video's, however, are primarilly focussed on gamers and I wouldn't mind seeing some info on how to select parts for someone who doesn't just game on their computer. For example, getting some info on selecting parts for building a PC for someone who games and does creative things on their computer like photo editing, video editing, auto cad, audio engineering, etc would be awesome as well.

I went with the 7950X about a month ago and it does everything that I need. I'm not changing it until it becomes outdated.

Thanks Jay, this is exactly the kind of video I needed now. I've been using a i7-4790K, that has served me VERY well, since I build my computer in 2015. It was so much easier back then, as the PC market was a bit less confusing, with less CPU's to choose from. I'm gonna pick a i5-12600K, 16gb (or maybe 32gb) DDR4 ram, and hope it will be good for many years to come, just like my old build. 😁👍

Having a 5950x I see no need to upgrade for another 5 years. However I have changed motherboards and added 64gig of system memory it does more than I need it to. I could have used a 5600x and would have been just as happy. My daughter has that one. Great Video Jay.

Dude, I feel the same way. I started really diving into world of PC building about a year ago. Now I'm diving into home labs and I recently got a promotion at work (that I am DEFINITELY not qualified for) that puts me (mostly) in charge of upgrading the workstation computers from 7 years ago. So not only do I get to deal with "Which gaming CPU do I want?", I also deal with "Do I want a server CPU for my NAS?", "Which motherboard chipset is best and offers the features I care about?", and "Is it better for us to upgrade to an Intel Xeon e5-2695 v4 or buy new computers with the i5-11500 for five times the price (or more)?". I am DROWNING.

This confusion is one of the reasons I haven't upgraded my system yet, still running a i9-9900k and a gtx 1080ti and it's totally fine for most games at 1440p and even some video editing. I initially wanted to build a new pc with a 4090, but when I saw the prices of the nvidia gpus that never happened. So I guess I'm keeping my current system until something breaks down or I can buy a better system at a reasonable price.

Yeah my 5900x is a beast (does all my 3d renders & anything else i throw at it) I am happy how it is, very keen to see how things go in the future for these x3d CPU's.

Just upgraded from a i7 7700 to a AMD 7600(non x). took me about 10hours to make a decision on what cpu/mobo/ram I want to buy to fit with me 7900xtx. I understand what you're saying with this many option to choose

Being a Micro Center employee in Marietta GA, I completely agree. Lately, it has been more complicated to find the right components for customers wanting to build a new computer. CPU's and motherboards are the main components that make this difficult. Not to mention ATX 3.0 PSU's coming with or without the 600 watt direct cable variant for 40 series GPU's. I love the stuff that is coming out but its only adding more to the confusion of "what do I go with for a new system" like you mentioned.

I finally upgraded my fx8350 and rx480 at the end of last year when prices for the "old" stuff was low to a 5700x and a 6700xt. It's an unfathomable difference and even seeing the the performance gains of the newest gens of cpus and gpus I don't see any reason I will need to get anything new in the next 3-5 years. I'm happy playing games at relatively high settings and fps with my midrange stuff. I don't need a video card and cpu that makes me need to buy a whole new monitor to keep up, 1440p at 144 is good enough for me.

Was getting hooked into going for "future-proofing" but thinking about it, my ryzen 5 3600, b450 mobo, and rtx 3070 is enough for my maxed 1440p gaming. I just keep telling myself, "you have enough... you are good!" Thank you Jay for the explanation. It's a headache to choose to upgrade nowadays, but competition is sooooo good now. It's crazy also figuring out the bottlenecking stuff between GPU and CPU.

Thanks Jay, I find myself shopping at the top like you said. I know what I'm doing and I find myself comparing and recomparing. My cart for 4 parts ended up at 2k recently and I found myself making excuses like...well the prices are going up. Your video was a nice reality check and exactly what I needed. I've been researching building my first computer for a little bit. I remember watching this video previously but didn't really think much about it at this time. Now that I'm ready to pull the trigger, I'm seriously going back and forth on what I want to do. Re-watching this video gave me my answer. I want to use the system for a little of everything. I will probably focus on creator type stuff and start playing with 3D models (CAD type models). I originally was going to go 7950x... but I think now I'm probably going to go with a 7700x due to the GPU landscape. I think my goal this time around is going to be more of getting a work system going, then figure out what exactly is holding me back. Once I've done that, then as I can afford it and better things come out, I'll upgrade the parts I feel I need to. If nothing else, this video has led me to believe that if it's your first system, you probably should just choose AMD vs Intel for CPU and AMD vs NVIDA for GPU and just go with entry level, best value for parts, until you personally understand what it is these parts are doing to your system... unless you have unlimited budget, then he'll go ham!

So .... I use a single pc setup. Me and a buddy tested streaming on my 7950X3D. The 8 none 3D V-cache we use for the streaming software while the 8 3D V-cache cores run the game. Works awesome ngl.

This could create a situation for someone called "decision paralysis", this actually happens and IS a (growing) problem.

Totally agree! Thanks for raising this up. I've had my previous PC for 10 years. Now the time has come to get a new one and it's chore to pick CPU+MB+RAM+SSD+Case. The number of options combination when you factor everything in is easily in the millions range... I'm not having as much fun as I used to have, quite frankly... It reminds me of an amazing book : The Paradox of Choice, by Barry Schwartz. He also did a great TED Talk. Must read, must watch...

Well, after Hardware Unboxed's review, I'm pretty locked onto the 7800X3D as the heart of my new build. If only I could get my hands on one. You guys have it so good in the US. Never take it for granted. 👍

I'm rolling with 5700x (staying in the 65w envelope) of the previous AMD platform. When the current platform reaches maturity, I will upgrade then, being able to pick from the best of the platform.

00:00 Exactly my view of the whole thing over the last 5 years regarding PC chips. It's a shame that we don't have games that are well optimized and use the performance of those graphics and processors.

I literally had this problem a day ago and Jayz already has a video posted about it, insane.

I just built my first PC last year. I dive headfirst into every video about every part I needed. I was overwhelmed with my CPU choice along with a MB, case, cooler, ram, power supply I mean for someone who has no idea & has to learn everything like I did most would probably give up because it is 100% overwhelming. If I could go back I’d buy a different CPU. I bought an i9-11900k which at the time was newer cuz the 12900 I believe just released but I didn’t do enough research on it so I wasted money but it works (for now)

To make things easier, I usually choose the motherboard first. How many processors it can support for future upgrade which won't break the bank account; how many NVMe drives it can support; how many slots of ram did it have (preferably 4); what graphic card that can take advantages on it's designs and features. And then just compare the prices with similar specs for different brand. Afterward, just search reviews on how the board performs and did it have any weakness like manufacturers faulty design or what's not.

As a PC builder things began to get confusing for me when you were able to build computers with either DDR4 ram or DDR5 ram, its not that bad but its an entire other variable to consider as well. When I first started i was also confused about the different between windows 10 and windows 10 pro or home.

I love how Jay just slaps us with the facts. Whenever I watch these vids, I feel like my system isn't underspecced... Which is different from when I watch all the new stuff come out...

Hugely applaud your attempt at shaving down confusion here. What I would've appreciated even more would be some figures or tables with the different CPU's in them to get the actual overview. Probably just a question of personal preference, but anyway - just some feedback. I'm still on my 6700k and a 2080Ti running sim racing 3x 1920x1200, so your take on older tier hardware is bang on 👍🏻 Hope all is well and you'll get better. Best to you and your family.

I got myself an order in for a 7800X3D. With that efficiency and the insane gaming performance while being more than enough for my hobbyist production stuff sold me on it. I plan to keep the system I'm building right now running for quite a while with maybe a GPU upgrade in 2-3 gens and if necessary some more RAM. Part selection was hard but I'm really happy now. 😁

More options in this case are certainly not better, it just makes it all more convoluted and adds more work for reviewers and customers alike.

You don't at all have to apologize, I hope you and your family are blessed with good health. I love the rant, thanks for shedding some light on this subject! Personally I've been really happy with my ryzen 2600 and when I upgraded to the newer 5600 I literally didn't notice anything, but I do appreciate that the 5600 uses next to no power at all and can easily utilize the stock cooler which is very economical and quiet as well. When paired with my 6700 xt, there hasn't been a situation where my cpu usage is getting high, it's like 30-40%, whereas the gpu usage is always at 99%. I might have been just fine with the 2600 but it was fun to buy and install a new part, so no regrets. Glad that I didn't spend more money on a cpu, and everything brought up in this video made me feel a little better about not really paying any attention to the cpu race. I couldn't keep up with all the models, but I do appreciate that someone out there is willing to decode it for smooth brains like mine.

This issue is real. It took me 3 weeks to select my new CPU, and I was only picking between AM5 CPUs. Thanks for all your coverage of AM5 over the last year, it was invaluable. I picked a Ryzen 7 7700, went with the non-X because power bills are real rough where I'm at and the system doesn't draw much more than the FM2+ system it's replacing. I'm sure that when the RX6750XT comes in to replace the GTX660 that will change by about 100 watts.

5800x3d is probably the best value on the market, with some good B550 boards falling under $200 now. It's still a top tier gaming cpu-- not as great for any productivity, but if your primary task is gaming, it's still right up there.

I am looking to build a new system soon and although I have a lot of knowledge on building pc's I also found myself stumped when trying to find a motherboard. It's absolutely insane how many models ASUS alone are making and the price differences are also quite insane from entry to top tier. I can luckily wait a little longer to do some more research since theres no way I'm paying for a current gen GPU at the prices they are at where I live.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I do not really follow the new tech that closely and really only upgrade my computer when I start to feel it struggling on a new game. Usually that's when I realize I have not upgraded in the last 6 years. The other week I built my mom a new computer and I once again found myself digging through which processor to buy for an hour. I always end up buying Intel because That's what I know and I'm too overwhelmed to try and figure out if AMD would be a better deal for my wants and needs needs.

I just built my very first PC and picking a CPU was a real struggle for me. I know I didn't pick the best one, but it will work for me for now. It was a budget build and I am new to gaming. I went in knowing I would upgrade in the future.

I'm always confused since there isn't a masterlist from the manufacturer itself that explains and breaks down all the differences between the CPUs. I need golden retrievers level language to explain it to me

I have been thinking about 7600 but I'm wondering is it going to be a bottle neck for a 7900 XTX as it is close to 4080 in performance? I noticed in benchmarks there are big differences with the CPU performance but all those benchmarks are done with a 4090 and when you go higher in resolution the less of a difference there is in performance.

When I do a build I narrow it down with a set budget and look at what's available here in Canada. Our prices are higher than the US for example I saw a 5800x3d selling for $459. I'm currently running a 5600x, Aorus Master, and a 3080. So the 5800x3d will likely be my only upgrade this time around.

i am so glad i waited for the 7800x3d, i knew why AMD was doing this, launching it so late. going from a 3900x to this will be crazy, ppl report a gaming load from around 40-50watts on the 7800x3d. this is insane

Thanks for a great video. I am working on doing a build for my wife. She is not a gamer, but she needs a lot more speed (she hates waiting for the computer to finish something). The last 2 computers I bought were prebuilt gaming computers to get her more speed and ram. I just didn't have the time to build her another computer over the last 7 years or so. The biggest issue I have with CPU's is that I do not understand intel's numbering system I know that the first 2 digits are processor family, but what do the last 3 digits mean? This video gave me a little more information on what the letters stand for. At least now I know which of those I may want. Thanks again for bringing some sense of organization and knowledge with this video. BTW, I am a boomer too :D

Excellent topic Jay. Thank you. The sheer number of desktop CPU skus is absurd. As a result, I have chosen to spend my money elsewhere, i.e., on other longer-lived upgrades, while continuing to wait for attrition to meaningfully thin out the market.

I don't think the F variant has QuickSync either since there's no iGPU. That might matter to some people if they are doing video encoding.

I am hoping AMD comes out either this gen or next gen with a CPU with a full iGPU in it, would be great for a small form factor with low power draw.
