Hope each day is gets a little better. I lost my Dad a few years ago. Lost grandparent in 1983-85 and 1992. I’ve been near death or maybe better said death has been a part of my life since my earliest memories. For years it was just people I didn’t know or who I had met but never got close to. However when my mothers parents died in 1992, I was living with them and much closer to them than my parents. I still miss them. A very important part of my life was gone all in a 3 month span. My grandfather and I made scale models together. The very first one we made was a 1:72 Sopwitb Camel fighter plane. It’s memories of doing things together that are most important when loved ones pass on. I still remember sitting in my grandfathers lap at his desk in Riverside California 1972.

My PC is at least $2500, and its 5 years 1 month old. 2017 everything was expensive, RGB ram, Ryzen 1700, Vega56. Kinda like DDR5 now, x670, Ryzen 7000, Rtx4000 soon.

For the average pc gamer anything built with modern gen parts will last years before you have to upgrade. Granted you dont get the bare minimum at the start. Spending a bit more on parts at the start will save you in the long run since you wont have to upgrade to maybe a new cpu or graphics card.

i have a ancient i5 4460 4c/4t and was looking for upgrade,right? Thats 4th gen cpu,and i was looking for 8 gen upgrade,maan,just waste of skin..they have same core count and base frequency but costs 10x more,like..why to pay more and still have the same? And just sheere amount of different intel cpu-s w 2% more capability in between hits the prices up high..way to high..thats not tech,its just clever marketing and fraud to bunch of who doesn't know much of this stuff..

I had an Intel 7400 and a Gtx 760 till a couple years back. Now, 12700 and a 3060ti with a 1440p panel. Just so much better.

I switched to Windows 10 only bc I was dumb enough not to read the specs of the new motherboard that I bought, which required at least Windows 10 to run. I wanted to use Windows 7 :(

Well, I'm broke AF so it isn't a choice for me but I'm really looking forward to upgrading from my 2008's Intel Pentium E5200 in the future 😆

Dude same! But last month i decided i held off for too long on my main rig and bit the i9 bullet.

Sanity is worth a lot more than money. I'd rather buy the current thing now and know it's gonna work smoothly than have the absolute best super new tech and have to bash my head against the inevitable early adopter problems and bugs. I want my computer to just work. Not have to fight it day in day out just to have the ability to brag I've got the best thing out there.

Until my 11700K/3080 system I'm on now I almost never upgraded CPU and RAM, I ran a Core 2 Quad Q6600 until 2016 then picked up an i7-2600 plus motherboard and RAM for dirt cheap. All I'd do is plop in a new GPU every 3 years or so and keep on going, 2-3 generation old GPUs don't cost much at all--from 2008 to 2021 I think I spent under a grand on my gaming PC.

@Ar Kay QATech The 1080 Ti hangs with the 3060 Ti, as long as you don't care about ray tracing or 4K I'd stick with that card until the market chills out some more

@Ar Kay QATech I hear ya, honestly I think ray tracing is great for stills but if you're moving around and doing things you hardly notice. Certainly not worth the performance hit. My old eyes don't see things like they used to, I'll rock my hardware until people question how I get by before upgrading.

I apply this same philosophy to buying consoles. I got my ps4 in 2018 (found out about red dead 2 while looking up a guide on rdr 1 and that did it for me) not long before ps5 came out and the slim model had none of the lauch model hardware issues (although, the ps4 probably had the best launch in terms of overall quality but I digress).

For a home build. A 3060ti, 5600x, 650watt psu, any b450 mobo, 3000 generic ram, sata ssd, and you have a pretty solid build for under 1000 bucks that you can game on in high fps in 1080, and for photo editing and it will do a fantastic job (overkill actually) but you'll be set for a very long time.

You most likely spent 1.5x more on the laptop than you would have needed to on a tower lol

Now that you have a gaming PC, it opens the doors for being able to play new games you couldn't run before, and sooner or later you'll end up buying 1.5k in components lmao

I am going to be honest. Branching out really into building servers is really not worth it other then a video every once in a great while because the hardware and design are not the same. When you start talking about true servers like a dl380 (I remember the gen 1 and 2s back when they were Compaq. I loved those boxes. So much better the the HP monsters and the IBM Xservers back then. Amazing how quickly both changes their design to match them), you are talking about a different level in computing. Building a home server with desktop equipment is cheap and easy. There is no special requirements to build a system to run as a nas or a home server. You just need to have the power for it to do what you want it to do. Building a server to match a backend system like the dl380 or a 3650/3850 (lenovo servers on that level) is on a different price level and outside of the vast majority of home user's wants or needs.

Technically you can get the cheap ass version of the steam deck. Or shop around on the used market.

Walmart has an HP Pavilion with a 3060 for $650 right now with mouse and keyboard included. There's not many options for future upgrades but just the graphics card alone cost $400 and you're getting everything but a monitor. I just built my 1st pc and here are the specs. 5600 CPU, Intel m.2 1Tb ssd Hd, 550 Pro motherboard, 3060 Gpu, case, 3 fans, 16gb 3200 hz ram, 750 watt PS and a new 24" 144 FPS gaming monitor for around $1200 and it has no problem keeping up with whatever I want to play. Mainly play Apex and I probably average 130-140 FPS and that is with OBS streaming and a couple of other programs running. I couldn't be happier with what I chose. Hope this helps!

Thank you all for your responses. I will consider the advice given. $650 doesn't sound bad. I will definitely look into something like that once I can afford it again. For now, my living expenses have been prioritized over this kind of purchase right now. As soon I get back to making an income and accumulate the funds, I will be joining the pc community. friendly advice ddr5 on intel z690 is really bad unstable big stability and memory errors, I hope x670 will have learned from intel but until people start reviewing and posting about how ddr5 works on it I would not look at a ddr5 system, its complete beta test currently it would not survive military testing ;)

I'm putting together a budget 1080p gaming system this week around the i3-12100F, my GPU choice is the RX6600. If you're playing in 1080p, and on a budget, this card can be had for $250 USD or less, and offers really good 1080p performance. It's also very power efficient. I'm upgrading from a AMD FX-4300 based system, so this is going to be massive for me. I think the FX-4300 came out around 2012... so basically a potato nowadays. Waiting for my PSU, and then I'm off to the races. I built my first system over 20 years ago, and have built many systems for friends/family, and the sense of accomplishment when you're done never gets old! Happy building! Enjoy your new rig!

That comment did not age well. Intel never said anything of the sort, and now for 13/14 both DDR4 and DDR5 are compatible. Do you also know that 12, 13 and 14 are fully compatible with Win 10?

I got the PSU, Case, and RAMs, and honestly, I think RM1000x might not be enough to run an RTX 3080/7900 XT. Though, I'd be going 1440P 144Hz, so I guess even a 4070/7700 XT should suffice. Case is TD500 Crystal. Rams are DDR4 3600 MT/s CL18 Viper RGB by Patriot. Plan is to go 12/13 700k cooled with a Deepcool LS720. That should last for 10 years, give or take.

@@roenie I agree @ code. GTA5 has been out for almost a decade, but I've watched tests max out at ~90fps even with the nVidia 80s+ series. Mainly only competition games can hit the 144fps+ range or the rare game that was optimize amazingly. However, your setup may not be limited by your CPU, but it is limited by the ram speed; that's your current bottleneck.

@@roenie Staying at higher resolutions is the key to not having to upgrade your cpu as much for sure.

@@roenie My 4790k was still good at running modern games but the 1% lows started to get a bit more noticeable, even if the CPU isn't at 100%. Not every game is perfectly optimized, sure, but the faster DDR4 RAM and newer core architectures definitely make a difference.

You are correct sir! When I built my first PC the hardest thing for me to shop for was the simplest; the case. There are so many companies making them, each having several models. I narrowed it to gaming cases with good air flow. Take your time and do your homework. It will be worth it.

Just don't fall into the hype and over spend on things.. choose what resolution you want, choose what games you like to play or will play, think about what you want your pc to be, games and browsing or hard core video editing software. Then get a budget lined up and stick to it! Pick team amd or intel, you do not need a smoking hot CPU for just gaming, anything new from intel or amd will be more then enough and don't get hyped up thinking you need some 12900 or 5900 to game at 1440p or even 4k. Get a motherboard thst you like and has good audio and usbs and at least 3 m.2. Pick a GPU that fits your budget and what you need it to do, brands don't matter much here and get cheaper one or think about cheaping out of fans or a cooler or case and put the saved money into a next tier up GPU.. get a 19 dollar cooler that will fit your MB and cpu, don't pee away all you money on a liquid cooler unless you have money to burn! pick memory 16 gigs min at 3200 cl14 or 3600 cl16, I saw a kit for 57 bucks, don't spend too much as saved money here can be put into more storage space and that's more important imo.. look for cheaper storage M.2 gen 3 only, 1 tb should be about 78 to 95 bucks, don't fall for the hype of gen 4 or anything. Then pick a case rated on gamer nexus channel for air flow and quality and once again, get a cheapy one now if that will help pay for better gpu, cpu, storage! Add up how many watts the system will pull and look at a psu, you will see them rated for quality on some fourm, I forget the name. Do not over spend on it, you can get colored cables for 20 bucks, you do not need anything better then gold rated.. pc parts seem complicated when starting out, but once you learn a bit it's easy and you don't want to learn you built a POS pc. Lol. I recommend a channel called PC builder, he just put together a nice vid of a few cheaper, but nice pc builds from 600 to 1500 bucks. He also goes over the don't and do's to build a pc. Good luck and don't get screwed to the tech hype!

It's like my pc which doesn't really need an upgrade for 1080p because I currently have got r5 5600x, 16gb ram 3600MHz CL17 dual channel kit and msi rtx 2060 super gp oc and I play in 1080p on 1080p 144Hz 1ms monitor. There are only two games I play which are hard to run, cyberpunk 2077 on high settings and ray tracing and warzone in loading screens where it sometimes stays a lot because of the 15.5-15.7gb occupied from 16. My pc has got only ssds, kingston a2000 500gb and patriot burst 960gb. It's true I play on the highest settings, dxr and dlss balanced, but there are no stutters or fps drops in the match. The next upgrade will be 32gb dual channel kit from corsair and the reason for this brand is icue. Now I'm waiting for corsair icue h115i elite capellix and 3 sp140. The case is be quiet pure base 500dx which will be connected to the commander core with an adapter cable because it will be exactly like an argb led strip.

I forgot to mention those 3 fans are sp140 rgb elite performance which have got pwm, not like the first ones

I am actually still using a 7200rpm Western Digital Black from back when 1TB was sort of considered excessive by most gamers... I use it for storage, mostly, but I do still run a few games off of it, and it ...still works... so something like 2012? I also have a working Seagate Barricuda 500GB drive from 2009... that's probably the most ancient part I still occasionally access. It's impressive, really... the drive from 2008 or whenever does make a bit of noise, though. Just enough to make me think it's capable of bursting into flames. Probably a good idea to lay them to rest some time before that happens....

Hope you learned a valuable lesson. The 13 was a good leap over a 12, and both a 13 and 14 will run DDR4 and DDR5. Intel never stated otherwise. Never listen to the rumour mill. You missed out on a good CPU because of rumours.

Just get a good cooler and OC the 8700k. Don't waste your money, especially if you game at 1440p or higher.

Fair warning: 1) New CPU architecture (also new socket for AMD) 2) New chipset 3) New DDR5 standard 4) New PCIe5 standard People forging ahead usually forget that it's only 1 and 2 most of the time. This generation will be 1, 2, 3, and 4. There will be BIOS problems, there will be driver problems, it will take time to fix them. That's months, or even over a year. Know the spaghetti blame game that hardware vendors will be tossing around. Know you will definitely need to flash new BIOS, maybe to the GPU also. If you're willing to do battle then do the build. If not then wait till 2024 for Zen5, or Intel's first chiplet based CPU, 14th gen. Additionally special ATX 3.0 power connectors that offer extra communication cables and plugs are just about to become the new standard as well.

@@Mr.Morden Im sorry what? PCIe5 won't be causing any issues. PCIe 4 didn't when it came out, i don't see why 5 would. Also DDR5 is already in use and is not causing any problems either. A new socket (for AMD) won't be causing any issues either. And if you think chipsets and CPu issues will plague 13th gen intel as well as zen4 then the same issues will happen for 14th gen intel and zen5. So i don't get why waiting for 14th gen and zen5 is better here with your thought process.

@@leruty Yes, I know that but there were other benefits I didn’t mention. Switching to a desktop cleaned up my setup, had *significantly* better thermals, and gave me a reasonable upgrade path. I was rarely bottlenecked by the i7 or the i5 with what I was playing anyway.

What's nice in having a good case is it lasts literally years. Especially anything in the past 2 years with a mesh front will last a long time. So you save that money and on fans when you upgrade.

^^^This! Just ordered a 850w Super Flower PSU (manufacturer of some popular EVGA PSU, great deal) because I didn't go big enough to begin with. Initially was running a Ryzen 3600 and GTX 1650 (all I could find new at the beginning of the GPU shortage) so bought a 500w PSU. Then I upgraded to a water cooled 1080 ti with eyes toward 30xx or 6xx0 series GPUs. Gonna need a WHOLE lot more power than 500w just to overclock what I'm currently running. Buy enough PSU from the start and it'll last a loooooong time

@@mysweetshadow747 I used to recommend around 500-600w for medium range build ($800-1000), but now things are starting to require a lot more power. PCPartPicker has a feature that gives an estimation of how much your minimum wattage should be for your build. It doesn't account for any overclocking and possible upgrades. So, I still say, if you can afford it, give yourself plenty of room. If you're system only needs 500w, it's only going to pull that much even if you have a 850w PSU. So you're not pulling/wasting that extra 200-300w. It's just a good buffer to have.

Not necessarily for overhead for upgrading, but also so that you can take advantage of its 80Plus efficiency. Last thing you want is to upgrade two or three gens up and all of a sudden your power efficiency gets pegged, even if you aren't necessarily capping on your PSU wattage.

I’m building my second system. The first one I built was for my wife, 5600x and a 3080 10gb. My system will be a 6800xt with a 5700x. I was this 🤏🏻close to going am5 but the last Gen stuff was too cheap to pass up iMO… especially after waiting almost 3 years to build one.

You're bottlenecking that RTX 3070, not a lot but you should pick up a cheap 5600x/5800x sometime later.

@@owlmostdead9492 primary Ethernet and WiFi for generalised internet, secondary Ethernet bridged with WiFi second channel for a routed lan that I can connect both WiFi and Ethernet devices to for debugging and localised comms - embedded is fun sometimes :D Sure, I could do much the same with a managed switch and an access point, but I don't have one at the moment and don't particularly want to get them when my computer can do it all by itself

I was about to suggest a managed switch but I wasn't sure if it was applicable to your workflow, honestly just get one. Good ones are like 50 bucks and trust me they are way more reliable than random Windows updates F'ing up settings and configs, in fields like pentesting you'd be risking your home network with that kind of setup since it's not 'properly' isolated.

3070 and any decent ryzen cpu will max 1440p. I have 3070 and 3700x and it runs everything in 1440p great, but you might start to restrict yourself on ram if you only have 16. Id definitely go with 32.

Mid tower is min recommended size...screw SFF. Everything is more and you gotta screw around with how tall is memory...will CPU cooler fit, will pwr fit, GPU fit? Unless you wanna pine over every detail go midtower. Remember...if you want to use SFF case in future... you're looking at same bullshit Tetris game fitting it all in. But, if u ready to send some parts back...hlgo for it.

A month from now we will have benchmarks for the new Ryzen7000 CPUs and the NVIDIA 40-series will officially be unveiled. _ASSUMING THE PEFORMANCE IS TRUE TO THE CURRENT LEAKS, AND WITH A $2400 BUDGET:_ The 12-core Ryzen9 7900x and (probably) an Nvidia RTX 4080 with 64GB DDR5 and a nice, fast pcie gen4 nvme SSD (probaly 2TB). That's your "high-end" option, with top-tier video editing AND gaming performance. Your GAMING FOCUSED option would changing the CPU to an 8-core Ryzen7 7700x and reduce the system to 32GB RAM. Your cost-saving option would be to go with a 7700x, 32GB RAM and step the GPU down also, to an RTX 4070 which will be MORE than sufficient for 1440p gaming. That would probably reduce your cost by $5-600, depending on how these new NVIDIA cards are priced. Hell with the money you saved there go out and buy yourself a PS5 for the exclusives that don't come over to PC.

@@ChadWatkins smallest non compromise is the o11 mini. Smaller than that you will need to do a decent amount of research which for some like me, is the joy of building a sff. To tinker with stuff to finally get things work together in a nr200 is a lot of fun as well as headaching if you are not careful. Though the dan a4 h2o (11l which I can fit in my backpack) is a tiny case that is actually pretty straightforward in the PC part picking as it can hold the vast majority of gpu besides the huge high end 80ti or higher and you only have 240 aio to pick. Though building is a pain if it's your first build. As the previous comment said, if you want a done and dusted build stick with mid tower at smallest the o11 mini or torrent compact. If you consider the building part fun then try dabble with sff. Though I highly advise not going lower than 11l since at that point you lose so much performance for a meh decrease in size Nonetheless, if you can wait wait until the next gen gpu is out since you can live with and 5000 or 12th Gen but a 4080 / 7800xt is gonna smoke their predecessor and also has the biggest impact unless you do cpu heavy workload

I totally agree. I do NOT PLAY GAMES. I do graphic design and scrapbooking. I use Photoshop and MS Paint. The only major game I have on my (now very) old system is Rocket League!! If I upgrade, i will need to spend more on storage to hold all the scrapbooking graphics that I purchase, than the CPU/speed/graphics - although a good graphics card is still required. A PC build Video for a NON GAMING PC would be very Helpful!!!!

@@francescathomas3502 Photoshop need good CPU .. and ram .. i just jump from 2700x to 5950x .. like 5 mc ago .. and it is a blast .. 32gb 3200cl14 .. 6900xt .. x570s master aorus Mobo 2 TB in nvme pcie 3 and 4 .. but still i would like to hear what jay has to say about build not focused around games only

I mean for anything like that pretty much just swap out the gaming GPU for a workstation GPU (better for rendering, etc.) and you should be fine lol (might want to lean towards a slightly better CPU than you would for most games too)
