To see Ringo Starr on drums @ 80 with Robbie Robertson from the BAND check out PLAYING FOR CHANGE PROJECT "THE WIEGHT" They also have cover of John Lennon's "IMAGINE". Both featuring musicians from around the world, so amazing.
Regarding Amber's comment on the keyboard, that's Billy Preston, an American that was called the 5th Beatle by many. He was involved in much of the studio work, and also this famous roof top concert.
My Mum was in London (at work) when she heard their music reverberating from the heavens, she - and many others, including their supervisors just walked out of offices and started to follow the music coming from Savile Row. She said they were like moths to moonlight, mesmerised and spellbound. A crowd gathered at the base of the Apple building as local bobby's (police) tried to figure out what to do... she and many others just stared upwards. Those times! Must have been magical.
When my mum was a girl she saw the beatles making a video for penny lane in East London riding horses she was behind a wall as they come riding through never liked John lennon after that cos he was scared of horse lol
Nobody that did not live through the Beatles years really have any idea just how highly they were regarded - actually, almost worshiped. That rooftop concert was like drawing moths to a flame. Can you even imagine the ticket prices they could have commanded had they done a final concert??
@@richardpare3538 I went to their last concert in Candlestick Park, still have the ticket stub, $6.50 was all it cost way back then. The roof top concert would have been price less.
This was their last concert as The Beatles. They got together on the roof of Apple Records for this last, memorable concert. It was eventually broken up by the police.
Because people were stopping on the sidewalks and cars were stopping on the road and blocking traffic. This was not a planned concert. It was awesome and their last. Great and heartbreaking at the same time.
“Heeeeeeeeeeee Heee!!!!” I didn’t think it was possible to enjoy someone else’s reaction to a musical moment more than you enjoy the moment yourself. It is.
It was all just chance that got Billy to record this album and perform this concert with the Beetles. The documentary Get Back shows them working out the recordings and song writing for this album.
This always brings tears to my eyes knowing that this was the last time I'll ever see them together. I first heard them in 1964 on the radio. The killing of John devastated me, I could not understand how someone could do that to him. The Beatles will live on forever.
They did this whole album in 22 days. from beginning to end. Incredible. This is literally their last group recording song together. Their last performance in front of people as a group. Very historical.
It's not hard to believe it only took 22days if you consider the massive number of people working for them and the low quality of songs like this. There's hardly a pro band in America who couldn't do at least as well as produce something as good (bad) as this song. The song's only value is stylistically. Otherwise, there is nothing above average about the lyrics, arrangement, or vocals.
@@merlball8520 for a nothin' bunch of jokers from Liddypool they did pretty good for themselves. Many, many, many of those professional musicians/ bands were inspired by and driven into music by these four rag tag teddy boys. Amazingly The Beatles actually lead the way in helping to change music, the appearance of everything around us and our mindset. I've lived on both sides of the British invasion and know what it was like before it happened and know how its been since. Final thought, with the assassination of JFK the people of the United States was hurting. It was a depressing time and a depressing place. The Beatles happened to be in the right place at the right time. Think about it, it could have been you.
Billy Preston not only a tremendous musician,a great singer and a huge showman with mesmerizing stage presence. He came up as a17 yr old in Ray Charles band. Billy was so good on organ that Ray made him the full time organ player. Saw Billy twice in concert with Ringo Starr and man was he awesome!! Ill never forget seeing him perform! A legend without doubt!!
What a contribution from Billy Preston on this song. I think his playing really gave this song its signature sound. His presence, as requested by George Harrison, definitely eased the tension during those recording sessions. I believe John and George wanted Billy to join the band but Paul was opposed and said “it’s bad enough with 4.” In a demo of this, after the last chorus, John yells “take it, Bill!” Billy would play on the solo records of John, George and Ringo. He was an incredible musician and well respected by the popular artists. He wrote You Are So Beautiful even though Joe Cocker’s version is probably the most popular.
You guys have to watch the Peter Jackson documentary on the Beatles, "Get Back" that just came out last year. The footage on this last impromptu, unannounced concert on the roof with people gathering in the streets below is beautiful. Best band ever, no contest.
They didn't know this was the last time they would perform as The Beatles...no ego, just 4 mates playing having fun. This little gift they gave us. Shout out to 5th Beatle Billy Preston. John Lennon forever!!
@@relevantbrother8964 "Fifth Beatle" claim originated in January 1969 when Harrison invited him to join them for recording sessions in order to defuse tensions in the band.
It was freezing cold outside the day they performed this concert. The fact they played so good is amazing. Anyone knows when you trying to play the guitar with cold hands it's almost impossible. Incredible band!!! The best ever!!!
Yep.. literally as they broke up as a group... they climbed on top of the roof of their studio, 🍎 Apple Studio, and gave a blistering, soulful final Free concert for the people. When it was over, they opened the back door and signed autographs, passed out handfuls of records and memorabilia to the people. The Beatles. One of the Greatest Rock and Roll Bands that Ever Was. Was No More...
They were debating right up to the last minute whether they were going to do this show or not. Literally standing in the stairway up to the roof. It was finally John who said, "Let's just do it."
It was the HQ of their Apple label on Savile Row, so no studio but otherwise right on. There was also the Apple Boutique on Baker Street; both were in central London.
@@mgonzales56 Ah, Abbey Road, a glorious medley of brilliant half-finished songs... Part of the tragic beauty of that album is definitely that you can simultaneously hear they are done while there's still so much potential to go on...
That Piano is being played by the great Billy Preston, who happened to be in London at the same time The Beatles were rehearsing these songs for the LET IT BE album. They needed someone to play the keyboard for the live performance, and well, the rest is history! For a real "shocker", try "Helter Skelter". It's considered by many as the first true heavy metal song!☮
When I watch the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show that Sunday night in 1964 with my brother it changed the life of us and every other young person who saw that show. In four short years they had their fairwell rooftop concert in 1969 and left an almost endless number of great songs. The Beatles were the greatest band and the trendsetters.
That fateful Sunday night, I actually shushed my dad for the first and last time in my life. We played Beatles instrumentals at his memorial service...I know that Daddy was laughing. ♥
@@Russ-gy7tx We watched it at my Grandparent's house. My Grandpa was astounded at the screaming, and encouraged 10 year old me to scream too. I was too shy.
@@rubyswaim1441 My sister and I tried to play it cool that we're not like those crazy🤪 fans. We sat in front of the TV ho-hum about the whole thing. But from the first second they started playing we went total Beatlemania🤪!!! Our grumpy, strict old Dad came into the room to see what the hoopla was about. Uh-oh, we thought he was going to turn it off and we were gonna have to tackle him because this was serious. But surprisingly he sat down without a word and watched with us. My sister and I looked at each other like👀 Sometime later he admitted he liked them. My Dad was a classical violinist and grumbled that everything else was just noise. So it was total and complete confirmation that if our Dad liked the Beatles they had to be the greatest band ever
@@Xcris_crosX , my dad finally came around after Chet Atkins recorded an album of their music. He idolized Chet Atkins, so if Chet liked them they couldn't be all that bad. 😉
I have been a Beatles fanatic ever since I heard “I Saw Her Standing There” in 1963 (I was11 years old) It’s hard to understand unless you were there just how much they changed music and culture. Love seeing you guys explore more of their songs and love your reactions!! You can’t go wrong with any of their songs. Thanks for making me smile!!!❤️
I was 3 in 1965 when my Dad got me to listen to them on the radio. My first popular music experience. Apparently, I was dancing and screeching with delight. Also, I didn't understand a word they were singing, as we lived in Uruguay, but it didn't matter. The music and energy was infectious
John's voice in this song is heartbreaking...he had one of the best r&r voices -- and Sir Paul, of course, accompanies him... seamlessly. You can feel the love...
Indeed, John's voice was so soulful. George Martin said that when John's voice came in on "A Day in the life" for the first time it sent shivers up and down his spine.
Billy Preston’s keyboard playing is so perfect for these tracks. He was a legend in his own right, and gave so much to this session of songs he played on. Th4 documentary on Disney+ is a must for anyone who if fascinated by the band.
It was a full concert on the rooftop. This is from the Wikipedia article: On 30 January 1969, the Beatles performed an unannounced concert from the rooftop of their Apple Corps headquarters at 3 Savile Row, within central London's office and fashion district. Joined by keyboardist Billy Preston, the band played a 42-minute set before the Metropolitan Police asked them to reduce the volume. It was the final public performance of their career. Although the concert was conceived just days before, the Beatles were planning a return to live performances throughout the early sessions for their album Let It Be (1970). They performed nine takes of five songs as crowds of onlookers, many of whom were on their lunch break, congregated in the streets and on the roofs of local buildings. The concert ended with the conclusion of "Get Back", with John Lennon joking, "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we've passed the audition." Footage from the performance was used in the 1970 documentary film Let It Be and the 2021 documentary series The Beatles: Get Back. The first performance of "I've Got a Feeling" and single takes of "One After 909" and "Dig a Pony" were also featured on the accompanying album. On 28 January 2022, the audio of the full rooftop performance was released to streaming services under the title Get Back - The Rooftop Performance. In February 2022, Disney released the entire concert sequence as presented in The Beatles: Get Back in IMAX as The Beatles: Get Back - The Rooftop Concert. It had a limited theatrical engagement.
Without a doubt, the greatest RnR band ever. Only John can flub lines, and it still sounds right. It will never happen again. RIP John n George - still sadly missed.
George is still one of the most underappreciated guitarists of all time -- because he's playing some fabulously subtle things here, as always. There's an often overlooked reason he and Clapton were best friends -- mutual respect.
@JC SKI If the survey was amongst top guitarists, that makes sense. But non-guitarists rarely notice cool, subtle playing -- the stuff that makes a song without bringing attention to itself -- like much of George's playing.
@Mark Helms I learned to play slide guitar . I was talking to a guy at music store about great Guitarists . I asked “ You know who is one of the best slide Guitarists of all time “ of course he replied “ Duane Allman “ I said yes but another great one who is underrated is George Harrison . He agreed and told me that wasn’t the first time he heard that.
Billy Preston on the keyboard is really the fifth Beatle (or sixth after George Martin). He brought so much heart and soul to the Let It Be recording sessions.
The Beatles were hammering out this song in the studio when Billy Preston dropped by and they asked him to sit in. As soon as he added his melodic keyboard, the entire song gelled around that.
Thank You for this one! By far one of my favorites! Unfortunately this was the last time the Beatles ever performed together. They were truly one of the most influential bands... Ever!
Some Beatle suggestions: - Revolution (Single version) - While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Yesterday - A Day in the Life - I Am The Walrus - Strawberry Fields - Blackbird - In My Life
I've heard them when I was 7 and didn't understand English, I'm 40 now and they are still my favourite band ever, bring me back to life every time I hear them when I'm sad or feeling exhausted. I think that's a true sign of really good music - when child loves it without understanding words and deep meanings.
What I love about this song and video is how they loved performing live together. They were hanging by a thread at this point, but the love of performing shows through.
This One's A Favorite,, But It Also Makes Me Sad Hearing It & Knowing That It Would Be Their Very Last Time Playing Together..R.I.P. George,, John & Billy🙏 ❤ Thanks For All You Gave Us.
The Beatles are THE BEATLES for a reason!! 💗 Have you checked out their solo work too? John Lennon "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)" and McCartney with MJ "Say Say Say" and George Harrison "When We Was Fab" and Ringo's "Photograph" are some of my faves of theirs. Keep smiling!! 😎😎😎
And #9 Dream by Lennon. IMHO his very best solo song. Oddly enough, the woman singing in it is not Yoko but May Pang, Yoko's close friend that John had an affair with while he and Yoko were separated. Yoko knew and was okay with it. That's what I understand anyway.
@ mike kling “Photograph” is one of my absolute favorite songs. Imagine my surprise when I found the 45 mph in mint condition at my grandparents house when they passed. I still have it and I can’t believe it was just there, accidentally left behind.
The Beatles have an iconic sound where when you hear a song of theirs you can tell it is them; while at the same they never wrote the same song twice!!!
I heard that this was the last video they made together, a free concert, on the roof top. I maybe wrong but heard that was the last time The Beatles ever played together. Such an awesome group! Love them!
I've watched a few of your reaction videos about the Beatles and it's amusing that 30 seconds into each clip your pause the video and say that "this is my favorite Beatles song". I'm 70 and grew up listening to the Beatles at every opportunity and I just love their work. Some people today struggle to understand the impact they had (and are still having) but you had to be alive in the late 50s, early 60s to know the kind of music that was being played at that time. Yes, there were some rockers but you also had Sinatra, Como, Belafonte and others who were crooners. Suddenly The Beatles were there with their very different sound that captured the world. There will never be another band to influence music as much as The Beatles. Always was and always will be number 1.
The Beatles went through a bunch of different musical periods. Amber I think you’d love their psychedelic period. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Strawberry Fields Forever or With a Little Help from my Friends…
All of those mentioned so far, plus "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" and "A Day in the Life". Also from that era, although not so 'psychedelic', are "Penny Lane", "All You Need Is Love", "The Fool on the Hill", plus what John called 'granny music', "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Your Mother Should Know".
This was January of 1969 and was their last public performance. They recorded their magnificent Abbey Road album later in the summer of 69. Some people, including me, think it was their best album.
This song was recorded during the Get Back sessions at the end of the band's career and during some testing times in their relationship with each other. George brought their old mate Billy Preston in on keyboards and it really lifted them. His organ fills are superb.
You've got to understand that the Beatles weren't just any other band. They were and are so much more. Nobody comes close. They're in a class by themselves as far as pop bands are concerned.
I'm 65, can't believe how the time has flown and the Beatles have been a constant. My son grew up on a steady Beatles diet and has done his own deep dive into their music - all he keeps saying is he can't believe how fresh their music sounds - he's 28 now and we still rock out together on the Beatles - so blessed....
She says... "I love John Lennon". She's right on time. He was the realest artist to date. Flawed, for sure, but honest. Honesty is the most honorable trait. Nothing else honorable follows without it.
The Beatles wanted to prove that they were still one of the best live bands in the world (after only making studio albums for years) and they made... This. The whole rooftop performance is 1000% worth watching. It's not perfect... But it's perfectly "human". Like John's voice.
Billy Preston's keyboards are so integral to the vibe of this song. The Beatles first met him very early in their career, in Hamburg, and kept up a friendship through the 1960s. He happened to be in London during the Let It Be sessions and was invited to join them in the studio and his contribution became so important to those sessions, and to them getting their groove back after being somewhat disheartened at that point in their working and personal relationship. Truly one of the "fifth" Beatles (Brian Epstein, George Martin, Stu Sutcliffe, Pete Best....)
I bought the Get Back single in 1969 and discoverd Don't Let Me Down as I always played the B-sides first. To this day it still gives me goosebumps. Pure brilliance.
She’s leaving home is one of the most poignant and beautiful songs (imho). The Beatles are a treasure-trove of beautiful songs. Eleanor rigby is another. Beautiful songs that will have you crying.
One of my favorites as well. My brother and I are both musicians and She's Leaving Home is one of our favorites to play when we get together because it's such an easy song and the harmonies sound so good.
Yes, “She’s Leaving Home” is so poignant, that it’s actually painful to hear. Seriously, your heart will hurt during and after you hear it. And I bet as soon as you finish it, you are going to have to listen to it again… immediately.
The Beatles forever changed music, the recording industry, radio, culture, and life as it was known before. What a beautiful way to end their collaboration. Each being a phenomenal artist in their own right.
If you watch the last episode of the four part series Get Back, you'll see them play this awesome song live! You should check out Back In the USSR from the White Album. A straight rock powerhouse you both will appreciate
They did that as a free roof top concert for the people in the streets of England. I am glad they filmed it. (There was a huge mob down on the street.)
There has never been a musical group in history with the magnetic pull of the Beatles. They were a vortex channelling the unfettered power of the gods. Their impact on popular music is immeasurable. They pulled crowds so big around their touring hotels, the traffic had to be diverted. Elvis never did that. I remember watching a replay of a live recording of Hey Jude that ran past the allocated time just before the national news. Ordinary, the show would be cut off, right? No, not for the Beatles. A new world entered the lexicon: Beatlemania. Never before, and never again.

Love it! Lennon's voice is the best. If you haven't already, please react to The Beatles singing TWIST AND SHOUT live on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. Electric.
I'm still stunned by Lennon's murder. I was 20 now 61 and remember the day. That day I came to understand my aunt's reaction to the death of Elvis. A part of you dies as well. I still can't fathom that he has now been gone longer than he was here.

That is Billy Preston on keyboards. He used to be on shindig. He was the first black guy I saw with a beatle haircut. He loved the Beatles. Since you mentioned it that is known as the rooftop concert and it was the last time the Beatles ever played in public together. It is featured on the new get back DVD and if you don't have that you need to get it. It is the entire creative process with the Beatles doing 13 new songs in 13 days. Not bad for a performance on a rooftop. In winter. One thing that blows me away about the Let It Be sessions is that at this point, John and Ringo are 29. Paul is 27 and George is only 25. And this is the end of their career. You definitely need to watch Peter Jackson’s documentary. The story leading up to the rooftop show is legend.
This was one of my favorite Beatle songs. It was the flip side of “Get Back”, which was one of their biggest hits, hitting #1 on the Hot 100 billboard charts.
Oh bruh, did you hit the nail on the head! They listen to the Beatles, express their amazement, and then go on to some grunge crap or whatever. Makes no sense.
