Ahh I'm from Hobart! Completely caught me off guard seeing this lol, I can absolutely vouch for the 'MONA effect'. Festivals such as Dark Mofo relating to the museum have also completely changed the city; literally the entire season of winter has had a cultural shift
I lived there from 2013 to 2018 (for university) the state was very different when I left compared to when I arrived. Definitely MONA + Xi Jinping's visit after the G20 summit in Brisbane has completely changed the way outsiders / mainlanders view Tasmania.
I'm from Melbourne. This also caught me off-guard. Greatly enjoyed visiting MONA when I visited Hobart and surrounds. In general, I think Hobart still beats Melbourne on some other unique points, e.g. nicer harbour, Antarctica museum/museum exhibits, Sea Shepheard ships docking, Nant distillery, and 'cosier' feel. Conversely, Melbourne is much bigger in general, and more diverse. So I hope both places continue to develop. Being so close to one another, I think it will be great if we can encourage more culturally-interested tourists to visit both Melbourne and Hobart.
@@sloppynyuszi When did aboriginals stop being called "aboriginals"??? (And agree with you about the arts & culture. Pretentious art isn't really an Australian cultural thing. I'd rather go to pubs & clubs to meet locals if in Hobart, rather than visit some pretentious art museums/exhibits).
I live down the road from Mona, it's pretty cool. Dark MOFO is 100% the best thing to come out of it however, the festival gets all of Hobart involved and it's always an experience
Been to Mona once before, it's a sensory overload and stands on its own as an avant garde museum. NGV caters to a different audience and judging from the press photos, it will be more focused on hosting and promoting contemporary art and artists from around the globe. Another difference here is that Melbourne City is behind the arts in our city and the new NGV build and if it wasn't for David Walsh, not sure Tasmania today would have any attractions of that magnitude to speak of beside its nature. Also Tasmania and Melbourne aren't in a competition, I enjoy visiting Tasmania for it's beauty and quiet lifestyle and love being in Melbourne for its restaurants, culture, shopping and events that take place. Both have very different things to offer different people.
I'm a fan of both cities, so I agree: both are worth visiting. But I grew up in Sydney so everyone in both of those cities think I'm a wanker anyhow. 😏 (This is where I'd insert some smart-arse comment about ARL v. AFL, but I don't actually care about football.) (Oh shut up, Britain-that's soccer! 😉)
Im not sure if they feel threatened, its not like they are trying to run MONA into the ground here. 90% of the people visiting MONA are there specifically for that reason, whereas a location in the CBD of such a large city will expose a lot more people to the arts that may have never experienced it otherwise. Which in turn could lead more people to then travel to Tasmania and visit MONA
The video is slightly misleading in that Melbourne isn't building NGV Contemporary in response to MONA, it's building it as part of the upgrades happening to the Arts Precinct as well as the limited space available at the current NGV building. Melbourne has always been an Art focused city so a new gallery of this scale was pretty much inevitable.
“Threatened” is definitely sensationalistic, Melbourne has two arts/galleries, and other museums, and a handful of theatre and concert spaces in direct connection to the fox location
I live in Hobart for five years as MONA was taking off, it has had a massive effect on the state, especially the MONA FOMA (summer) and DARK MOFO (winter) festivals. Nowadays I am living in Melbourne, not far from where the new gallery will be built. I'm looking forward to it!
You missed the best bit...When that hotel plan was first floated, old mate Walshy made a thing of shortening Hotel MONA to just... "HoMo". Personally, I thought it was quite funny, but it upset a few people round these parts; can't imagine why...😂👍🇦🇺
Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! The world is quickly headed for destruction, and sooner or later you will have to sit at the judgement seat and give an account for your actions. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life! - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God tho. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc and you should get a response. Have a blessed day!
The ferry to MONA is optional. It's a short drive from the city centre. Also there is the big redevelopment of museums going on in Sydney. The Australian Museum just had a massive multi-year refurb, and the Powerhouse Museum is going to be multi-site across the city.
I haven't even heard about MONA until now but I'm now googling flights from Canada as we speak! Plus, not gonna lie, I love that millionaire's candor... "I'm a complete waste of space..." FINALLY! Someone says what almost 99% of the population was already thinking... ;-)
He was involved with the gambling industry, and specifically poker machines, which are very controversial across Australia. So he was just being honest about how the majority of the general public will feel about him.
Sounds a bit like our Denise Coates, she became one of the richest women in the world through her BetFred gambling site and now makes over 200 million a year in salary, she even earned a knighthood from the Queen. Not bad for a woman that is responsible for countless thousands of deaths and ruined lives. One more reason to despise our royal family if any Aussies still need one.
You’ll love Tassie - well worth a driving tour if you have the time. Also we have a few nice things up here in my small town - it’s called ‘Sydney’; you may have heard of it. Hope you can swing by.
@@yeetdeets Mona wasn't paid for by taxes. Walsh could easily have bought a $250m vanity yacht; instead, he spent the money in the the down trodden suburb he grew up in. Dark mofo next week too!
@@yeetdeets In my country? I pay my taxes and it is better they spend it on Museum Wars than they pocket it and build roads that will have potholes a week after they build it.
@@scorpioninpink I live in a rural area of one of these states (Victoria) and I would much rather they build some roads with my taxes - even if they do get potholes. We still have roads closed around my region from the fires that destroyed this area 2.5 years ago. But instead we spend Billions to build a bigger art gallery.
If you're going to illustrate a piece about Australian art with pop stars from Neighbours, you missed a huge trick - the perfect one to use was Craig McLachlan with "Hey MONA" 😆
I lived in hobart for a long time, this video only captures 1% of just how cool MONA is. It's basically like a really cool supervillan lair thats open to the public.
As a native Hobartian, I can attest to the huge positive impact MONA has had on our city. When Dark MoFo started (Winter Solstice art festival put on by MONA) the festival director told us to "suck it up, buy a puffer jacket, and embrace winter". And we have, the puffer jacket is now called a Tasmanian Tuxedo. $0.02
Before this video I couldn't place Hobart on the map and now I want to go there. It's a shame that architects, dreamers and billionaires don't all try to transform their cities for the better.
Hobart is a really lovely city full of tourist traps that you are very happy to be trapped in. My favourite is the 200 year old sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place that have been transformed into cafes and shops overlooking a park and the waterfront. Behind them looms a high mountain that is snowcapped in winter. I've been to plenty of cities in Europe that are the same size (around 250,000 people), but Hobart is nicer than any of them.

Went to MONA when i was there to perform at Dark Mofo a few years back. Best museum experience i've ever had. Felt like i was in a baddies lair from a Bond film
I visited Mona from Melbourne earlier this year, I have to say it the art wasn't for me but the highlight was the building and surrounds so incredible and well worth the visit.
@@michaelrmurphy2734 I live near it and we go to the grounds all the time without going in. It has cool facilities for the kids, live music and a few bars.
@@michaelrmurphy2734 No, anyone can hang out on the grounds for free and Tasmanians can enter the museum for free at any time so long as they have some ID.
Two amazing cities, both with amazing projects for the arts. As a Melburnian who visits Hobart monthly on business, I can’t wait to see how this goes!!!
Gotta say as guy who’s worked as a tower crane dogman/rigger in Melbourne for decades now that my hometown really punches above its weight on this channel! Love your content mate. Keep up the good work!
The new NGV in Melbourne is the tip of the iceberg, the tallest tower Aus is gonna be built pretty close to it and transform that neighbourhood!! Don’t need a ferry to get there ;)
Both of these major projects, the extant MONA in Hobart and The Fox NGV in Melbourne in the pipeline, have been designed by Greek Australian architects. Nonda Katsalidis completed MONA and has won prestigious awards for his design and Angelo Candalepas whose winning design for The Fox NGV will be constructed in Melbourne. Katsalidis and Candalepas have also designed many other significant buildings throughout Australia and have won awards for those as well. They are both just two of the many Greek Australians architects who have been involved with major building projects throughout Australia, in all the major cities as well as regional areas.
@@michaelrmurphy2734 It's still pretty blue collar and contains quite a lot of affordable housing for Hobart. There is a shortage statewide but you can't blame MONA. Developments still happen in this part of town while the rest of the state is dominated by NIMBYs
Fascinating watching this video as a lifelong Tasmanian resident. I don't think a single person here is aware that we have a construction rivalry with Melbourne :P

As a Melbourne resident and visitor to both museums, I cant attest to the amazing effect that these great institutions have on both cities. There is nothing more crucial to the liveability and viability of a city than its artistic endeavors, so kudos to both states for having the guts to see the value in the arts, we are all better for it.
I will say however, Hobart is an infrastructure nightmare. As a Tasmanian, you see it a lot. Older generations dont want any change what so ever, so all the roads are unequipped for the population growth, there is no decent public transport and we currently have a housing crisis. I cant wait to move out of Tasmania
Tasmania is Australia's best kept secret. To call it beautiful is a massive understatement. It is so lush and green. The nature and biodiversity cannot be understated. The southern lights of Aurora Australis is one of countless reasons to go there. Other reasons include the worlds freshest air, incredible food and convict architecture.
As an Australian and having spent two entire days at MOMA, I highly recommend that it be visited, and that an open mind be kept. There will be something for everyone. 🇦🇺
Every state capital has a gallery of contemporary art, even some of the regional hubs (like Bendigo) have surprisingly good collections. It's the beauty of Tasmania's wild places that makes it a truly _unique_ Australian destination. I could've visited MONA a decade ago, but it would've cost me a day's hiking... I don't regret my choice.
As a Melbournian its very exciting. It's quite a staggering project given the two existing NGV galleries are already immense, one of which adjoins the site of the new gallery
Dannii "I Begin to Wonder" Minogue... "I began to wonder myself... was my only global "hit" in 2003 enough to cement my reputation as an also ran in the pop game?" TLDR: It isn't... Need more songs! MORE INPUT STEFANIE! ;-)
As a Hobart resident who lived in Melbourne for 10 years, I have a lot of sympathy for my friends from "Melbs". Lockdown for them was brutal. At the same time, I'm happy to see Melbourne feel the pinch and be motivated to create their new precinct. In some respects Melbourne has been complacent with it's badge of the arts capital of Au. Hobart has always punched above its weight, Walshy made sure everyone knows this. I think this kind of competition is positive. For 10 years we have been those that host many visitors, give them the breath of fresh air and creative space to dream big and experience the "MONA Effect."
I’m pretty sure NGV Contemporary is being built to compete with the almost complete Sydney Modern, designed by SANAA. Surprised that didn’t get a mention.
