This is BETTER than Social Media for Artists

I stepped away from Facebook and Instagram some time ago, making a deliberate pivot in how I connect with my audience and share my art. This decision wasn't taken lightly but was informed by a desire to control my digital footprint and ensure my art business thrived on terms that respected both my values and my audience's privacy. My website and email list have become the cornerstones of my art business, much like how others might use social media platforms.

It's the future. Social media is going to be flooded with machine generated nonsense so we may as well go back to the old world. Social media is dead, long live the website.

Absolutely, embracing personal websites and newsletters over the clutter of social media does seem like a forward step back to meaningful digital interactions.

I hate social media and enjoy long-format writing, so I might just go this route. Thank you!

This is so refreshing to hear. I’ve been using Instagram and Facebook but never have received any commissions requests through them. I had been on Instagram for many years and yet I’m still below 100 Likes. Plus Facebook is getting to complicated to use. I will definitely go back to basics…to using email newsletter. Thanks for such thoughtful tips!

I'm so glad this resonated with you! Social media can definitely feel overwhelming, especially when it doesn't bring in the results you're hoping for. Going back to basics with email newsletters is such a solid approach-you have more control and direct connection with people who are genuinely interested. Wishing you all the best with it!

I just saw your video and WOW! I want to go thsis route. I dispise social media for not just for your definaition but also the toxicity as well as the overstimulation and addictive nature. I love this idea of yours. I love to be an artist and share my work. How do I set up something like this? I could use a personal website and email list. Especally that I still want to grow an audiance and make money off art but not deal with the mess that is social media

I'm thrilled you found the video inspiring! Setting up a personal website and email list is a fantastic start to share your art while building an audience away from the chaos of social media. I recommend platforms like WordPress or Squarespace for websites and Mailchimp or Convertkit for email newsletters. Keep creating!

Thanks. I got to figure this out. I really don't like social media and I feel like not using it will not only be better for my mental health but also my art would be better too as I am less distracted, exhusted and can truly work on my art. Thanks so much. Saving this video when I need to.@@ChrisWilsonStudio

I have been looking into newsletter for aw hile now. And what you said is def true. This year I have been having more disconnect with social media then ever before. Especially with the growing usage of AI, manipulated messages and whatnot. And what you are saying, reflect back upon the point of ownership. For bringing back the way artists had a direct connection with interested people of your work. Will begin the process of doing this before April. Need to give myself the time to switch it up. As its the same with my RU-vid. Still figuring out a way to properly have a system, to communicate ideas I want to talk about.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences! It's definitely a challenge navigating the digital landscape, especially with the rapid changes and the role of AI. You're right about the importance of ownership and maintaining that direct connection with your audience. Starting your newsletter is a great step towards building a more personal and meaningful engagement with your community. Take your time to set it up in a way that reflects your unique voice and vision. And when it comes to RU-vid, finding a system that works for you is key to effectively communicate your ideas. Remember, it's all a process, and every step forward is progress. Best of luck with your transition, and I'm here to support you along the way!

I’ve been hearing about the power of email and newsletters for a really long time now, but I’m just not sure how to get started. I feel like it would be an extra burden on top of trying to create content for RU-vid, Instagram, and maybe even a Patreon or shop in the future. Could you share any advice on how to start up a newsletter as an artist?
@ChrisWilsonStudio
@ChrisWilsonStudio 8 месяцев назад
Totally get the hesitation with balancing so much already! Diving into newsletters might seem like a big step, but it's actually a great way to form a deeper connection with your audience in a more personal space. Consider starting with an easy-to-use platform like Mailchimp or Substack, which offer free options. You don't have to commit to sending out emails too frequently; a simple monthly update can be very engaging. Think about sharing content that offers a peek behind the curtain, like behind-the-scenes glimpses, exclusive insights, or early access to your projects, making your newsletter a unique complement to your other channels. To make it less overwhelming, you can repurpose content you’ve already created for RU-vid or Instagram, reducing the need to create something new from scratch. And promoting your newsletter can be as easy as adding a call-to-action in your RU-vid videos or Instagram posts, inviting your followers to sign up. The key is to start small, stay true to your voice, and let it evolve naturally.

is there some sort of "cheap" paper type thats well-suited for ballpoint pen drawing? I've got some stacks of A4 printer paper for my pencil sketches/practice, but I'm not sure if it'll work that well with pens (unsure if it even works well with pencils to begin with frankly😅, just looking for cheap paper alternatives to buy in bulk for practice)
@ChrisWilsonStudio
@ChrisWilsonStudio 8 месяцев назад
For ballpoint pen drawing, you might want to consider using a slightly heavier paper than standard A4 printer paper, as it can handle the ink better without bleeding or showing through. Look for medium-weight drawing papers (around 90-110 gsm) that are still affordable and offer a smooth surface for your pen work. This type of paper will give you the durability and finish you need for detailed pen drawings without breaking the bank.

As someone who recently switched to self-hosting myself, can an artist benefit from focusing on email and a substack?
@ChrisWilsonStudio

Absolutely, there are many who are succeeding from paid newsletters such as Substack.
