Aside from the obvious marketing angle, the Powgs were created because the island they were filming on had puffins everywhere, and it was easier to digitally change them than to remove them.

It's funny when you say Poe and Rey didn't meet when at the end of TFA they were literally standing next to each other in the same room Lol.

To clear some questions you had: (tried my best not to spoil anything for the next movie) lot of symbolism in this movie and yes these are a reskin of the old movies that´s a reason why people don´t like it. Lea is the daughter of ANIKIN SKYWALKER. more in the next movie The "upside down" hole is a similar place where Luke went on Dagobah. He as well saw himself, just as Vader. best scene in the Movie is with Yoda. Yes, that´s a "burden" a teacher must bear. "turned" on like a light switch :) I feel some shaming on Snoke ... he was born this way .... .... .... the Phasma character got thrown down the garbage shoot twice, in the movie and from the script yes cool visual and a callback to Hoth Luke force projected himself (hinted with the salt). That´s a crazy feet. Took all he had, that´s why he died. "lifting rocks" is easy to say but not to do Luke had difficulty to lift pebbles and said to lifting a X-Wing "impossible" She just did that, with no difficulty at all. AND no training. That "was" crazy. - point of this movie The boy isn´t important to the story till now. He was just symbolism. yes the dice weren´t there further question pls comment :)

Oooo fun fact on the Porgs, because I just got to the part where you met them for the first time, the Porgs were a creative solution to a production issue. The island where they filmed was full of puffins, but they had to starwars them so all the puffins became porgs!

I love this film. If you study film or work in film, you can pick out these beautiful gems of ideas and techniques that Rian sprinkles through. Most people Dont get or appreciate it, but the true film people see exactly what going on and that has sparked more than a few filmmakers imaginations.

I'm still heart broken that Carrie fisher died in the production of these reboots. I feel like such a baby lol. At least with Iron Man and Black Widow, they controlled the write-off and made it tear jerking. But they just didn't handle Carrie fishers death right in these films right.

I personally really like this movie, but i understand why others don’t! I’m just ready for the discourse to stop being toxic. I don’t understand why it’s so heated, especially 6 years later. I think we just need to accept some people like it and some don’t. Everyone being at each other’s throats makes being a Star Wars fan exhausting

This was my favorite of the sequels. There are so many details in this movie that can be easily missed or overlooked. It took me three viewings to catch them all. The main theme of the movie is failure. Poe fails, Kylo fails, Luke fails, Finn fails. But by the end they come around and win the day.

This one has seriously grown on me. Everything with Rey and Kylo is really good. Other than the casino side mission, I like the story

This is like the show "whose line is it anyway?" Where anything goes and the points don't matter. I tried to write a short comment but ended up ranting for a couple pages, so here's my second attempt. Rey is the biggest Mary Sue I've ever seen. Snoke being a throwaway character was moronic. Finn being a clown is a complete waste of a character. His and Rose's adventure was a waste of screen time, with no change to the outcome of the movie. Luke was written like a fanfic writer, not an actual professional writer. Yoda's line about failure being the best teacher was pretty damn good though. Not even trying because you're afraid to fail means you've already failed. Do your best, learn from the experience, success or failure. Killing off Luke was a bad idea. It should have been Luke vs Snoke and Rey vs Ben in the big fight. If you have to kill off Luke, make it mean something, like taking a blow for Ben and saying he should have been there for him, then Ben and Rey vs a tired Snoke. But set the fight after Rey has had enough time to actually learn how to use the Force. For that matter, give Finn the Force as well, then have Luke train both of them.

Luke's plotline is the only thing I like about this movie. That and the obvious (music, call backs to the original trilogy, some of the fight choreography, Laura Dern if not her character).

I used to dislike this movie, but 7 years later I have finally watched it again and found that I liked it. Does it have flaws? Sure. But, accepting it for what it is, I think there's a lot to like. I've also found that a lot of my original criticisms of the movie are not entirely fair and were never really that specific. I was 15 when I first watched this and still relatively new to Star Wars. I didn't totally understand the universe because I hadn't seen things like the Clone Wars or Rebels. I was also just young and kids don't always pick up on everything. I think parts of this movie confused me and I wasn't able to make certain connections, and with the hate that I saw this movie was getting, I knew I didn't like it and others didn't so I never went back to check it out because I thought it would be a waste of time. Thus, my opinion was based on what I remembered as a teenage boy.

I am one with mixed feelings about this episode. There are things I loved about it and things I didn’t care for. I didn’t love the humor in this one, and I usually like the comedic lines it usually has but with Poe’s antics I don’t think it worked. Some of my favorite sequel scenes are with the red guards and snoke. I love Rey, Kylo and The Force Awakens so I went into it with high hopes. The least effective for me was Rose and Finn in Casino world. It just was a good chunk of time and they failed. Sure characters can fail but instead of all that time why not have us look at some of the reasons that Luke left. It’s hard to believe that he would give up on his nephew. His guilt in the situation could have led to him making attempts to bring him back and failing. He had hope with Darth Vader who was horrible. Maybe show us his hope leading to despair and eventual self exile. Then we may have brought grumpy old man Luke more. I did appreciate Finn and his confrontation with phasma and would have liked more of them but trim that mission or come up with something better so he could have his personal issues with stormtroopers worked out.

Luke Skywalker, a guy with a pretty well established light-side character, a guy who - instead of fighting and trying to kill - the most horrible and dark person in the entire galaxy (Darth Vader), went all out to bring him back to the light side. Now he is scared of a dream or vison and goes for a sad disgracing kill? No, that doesn't make any sense, unless you ignore who Luke was and what his character arc meant.

This would have been better as a stand alone movie with non canonical characters or an animated movie.

This movie isn't terrible. But it isn't amazing. It just is. I'm not overly attached to the franchise, so it's just like solid sci-fi to me. It's kind of funny watching Star Wars fans from the outside as a Trekkie myself. The two fandoms feel differently to me. Trekkies will get into heated discussions, but they very rarely seem to devolve into people getting legit upset like Star Wars fans. For better or worse, you gotta love the passion involved. FYI: Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie.

I know that you watched this a long time ago (but I just discovered you!), but I thought I would respond to your inquiry about why they used the word 'turn'--even though you likely won't see this (: I'm (ahem) older, so saw the original movies back when they were released. I remember an interview with George Lucas who talked about the religious language surrounding the Jedi and I think the word choice for turn relates to that. In Christianity, the word 'repent' means to turn again... sort of the idea that turning to dark is the first 'wrong' turn. So to repent is to turn again, back to who you were meant to be. Anywho... love your content!

Honestly, I am happy you enjoyed this. I just can't enjoy this no matter how hard I try. The writing of this movie is astoundingly bad. Finn and Luke were ruined, Leia was an incompetent leader who surrounded herself with idiots, Canto Bight arc was terrible, First Order make no sense, etc. etc. TFA was pretty good when it came out. Rogue One was amazing. But this movie forever ruined Disney's reputation with most of the Star Wars Fanbase.

When you are done with the Skywalker Saga, how about some reactions to the different Star Wars Documentarys out there. Have not seen any reaction to those.

I love your intro in this... moral of the story: it's a lot easier to get along with people if we just let them enjoy what they enjoy without trying to convince them that they shouldn't. I also appreciate Kylo Ren too. I know that's kind of a hot take or whatever but I think it makes him feel believable that he has this internal conflict with the light side and also that he's kind of an annoying and delusional brat at times.

According to the people in charge of disney they do not make movies just for entertainment. They make movies to push their ideology, this is what people who made these movies say, actors , directors, CEOs.

I doubt you caught it, but the kid at the end actually used the force to call the broom to himself.

There were 3 major plot decisions in this film that I really, really didn't like. 1. Luke even considering for a moment that killing HIS NEPHEW in his sleep because he seemed kinda bad was the right thing to do. Just utterly ridiculous for the character Luke is. 2. Snoke being killed so easily and without any explanation of who he was or where he came from. You can't just introduce super powerful, important characters that have no reason for existing. 3. Kylo immediately going back to "let's be bad guys together". These first two films are clearly setting up that there's still something good in him, and this could've been an opportunity to go in a different direction with the story. Instead he's just the new big bad guy.

In short, it seems to be because of J.J. Abrams' highest value in storytelling. If you saw Abrams' series Lost, you will have seen this. He gave a TED Talk on his concept that he uses for everything called "The Mystery Box". It's basically to keep teasing an audience with some mysterious unknown thing just a little out of reach that they haven't figured out, and if possible to just keep that going forever. Some hints and story threads were laid down in episode 7, but then why were they just abandoned or left to be dead ends? There was so much speculation from fans, that some of the guesses were apparently correct. This would infuriate J.J. Abrams, who would willingly change the story midstream just to prove to the fans that their guesses weren't correct after all, and it was this other weird thing no one expected, and the surprise moment was intact, even if it didn't make sense.

The last great Star Wars movie we will ever get. Second only to Empire, which i saw in theaters at 9. The original release. After this fandom reaction doomed us to fan service

I liked this movie. In my opinion, Luke just barely got away with destroying the first Death Star, he was lucky cause he had basically no Jedi training, and in empire strikes back, Luke got his hand cut off and Vader would have killed him if Vader wanted him dead(so Luke got lucky again) and in return of the Jedi, Vader and the emperor had him dead to rights if it were not for Vader stepping in… so to me Luke was too inexperienced and very lucky… and I think he grew up more and learned just how lucky he got and was then afraid of kylo messing everything up again. And him going into exile I feel would have been a natural reaction to getting older and realizing his mistakes.

My main complaint about this episode is that the ending seemed to drag on. There were several times I thought the movie would end, only to have something else occur.

Then it would have been attacked and Leia would pull out her lightsaber and use the force to shield everyone. All of this was seen in filming, though it was all scrapped in the end. - In Legends, immediately ROTJ, Luke trained Leia to become a Jedi, and she made it all the way to Knight, and kept on being a Jedi for a long time. 12:30 People always underestimate the janitors. There's basically nowhere they don't have access to. 17:01 That's Billie Lourd, Carrie Fisher's daughter. 21:47 Notice they went the puppet route instead of prequel CGI Yoda. Also that scene shortly before was Luke re-connecting himself to the Force. That's why Yoda was able to appear to Luke again. 22:36 YUP! Also recognize how the Jedi and Sith both say this, but mean it in different ways. On that note, the Order of the Sith Lords is gone in Disney's timeline. Vader and Sidious were the last Sith. But in Legends, Han and Leia's son (Jacen) adopts the name Darth Caedus, continuing the Order of the Sith Lords. 27:03 It's Benicio Del Toro. You should have seen this coming. 32:42 Even in Legends, the Millennium Falcon was the most wanted ship in the Galaxy. 35:00 First clue that the Luke that showed up wasn't real. The Skywalker Lightsaber was destroyed just before this. 36:30 That force power actually existed in Legends. Force Doppelganger. Except Luke has god-level force power and was able to project himself literal lightyears away for a significant period of time. 37:00 If you didn't notice, this shot parallel's Anakin's march on the Jedi Temple. 37:20 Correct. And Leia realized Luke was an illusion the moment he put the dice in her hands. She realized they weren't really there. 37:52 Actually, there's an Episode X in production right now. 38:10 Did you not notice the kid with the broom use the force to pull the broom to him?

I can understand what Rian Johnson wanted to do with this movie. He clearly wants to subvert expectations. And because Star Wars comes with very lofty expectations, that can be extremely restrictive when you're writing a story. Kylo Ren saying "Let the past die, kill it if you must" is Rian Johnson basically telling the audience to let go of their nostalgic connection to the franchise and any overblown expectations that have sprung from that nostalgia. But Johnson also tells the audience not to expect any meaningful answers to the questions that the previous film set up. No audience wants to be told that the things they've been led to be emotionally invested in are pointless and no resolutions are coming. It makes them feel like they're wasting their time. So yeah, Johnson's approach ended up backfiring on him. The movie pissed off A LOT of people and did A LOT of damage to the brand. When you watch the next one, you'll see just how desperately frantic that movie is to try to fix all the damage that The Last Jedi did.

To this day, I have nothing but hatred for this movie. This movie broke my love for the franchise that I was engaged with for 2 decades. The writing is absolutely nonsensical, and the next movie doesn't improve things.

Honestly, my two problems with the sequel trilogy are in the first when Han hyperspeeds the Millennium Falcon out of the hanger, and it didn’t do it’s own “Holdover Maneuver” to the hanger; and just the fact that no matter what the Resistance blows up at the end of one movie, at the start of the next they are still the underdogs and the Empire/First Order have millions of more troops and ships and some bigger, worse death machine just materialize and threaten everyone.

I think the sequels get a bad rap, but I’ve gotta say I hate how Rose saved Finn! Finn started out being kind of cowardly and selfish, him sacrificing himself for the Resistance would’ve showed HUGE change in his character. Regardless of that scene too I wish he got more character development, maybe a bit more of his life as a Stormtrooper.

As someone else commented. It is alot of different views on this movie. This was the movie that split the fanbase in two. Like or dislike. I do not care what anyone think of the movie. You like it, good. You dislike it, good. What I care about is that people understand why fans are passionate about star wars. Yes, fans can go to far in their treatment of actors like Jake Lloyd and Ahmed Best, but it is coming from a place of love for the franchise. I need to wait to give my full response to what I think of this movie until after 9, because it is impossible for me to do without giving spoilers.

Rian Johnson showed what he could do with a Star Wars movie and one could only imagine if he was given all three and was able to tell a complete three story arc. Honestly, Abrams was awful and while I know this movie was very controversial for Star Wars, it did show how much better Johnson is in story telling.

For Star Wars, these movies were a double edged sword Disney brought many new fans to the franchise with the shows like Mando but the story and little things are just trash, just watch a Vid what could´ve happened. People hate cause hate comes from Loving smth :) And these could be great movies and they are on the very top of their outer appearance, but not deeper down . sorry if this doesnt make very much sens my english is failing me rn :) Like look at Rogue One, FANTASTIC Movie. they had no idea where to go with their own story and wtf is "I am rey ...." So just saying they ARE good movies, for the normal not die hard fan They are NOT for the franchise Emme said it her self these are "goofy" little brother of the OG´s , like 38:05 this shouldn´t be and people didn´t like the Prequals at first so I am going to watch the new Rey ... film, cause Daisy did a great job with a horrendous script big hopes for the Future, in Dave we trust lets see what the mouse brings us next

I don't hate the Sequel series, because there's still some good stuff in there including the characters. I don't think the storyline's are good, but I love the music and characters.

The movie that completely ruined the sequel trilogy as well as multiple ot characters, rise of Palpatine was even worse, force awakens not perfect was a solid start for the new trilogy but this completely ruined it and episode 9 made it even worse the actors where visibly frustrated with it, as well as many Disney executives

watching some videos online we learn that Rey actually died in this imperial guard fight. but via the magic of editing we saved her life! lol. when shes fighting the dual wielding guard she blocks his right hand while his left hand crosses her stomach which would have been a fatal wound. so we see the weapon as it crosses in front of her body but when the hand shows up on the other side of her they just painted the weapon out so it wasnt so obvious she just got her stomach sliced/melted or whatever these things do. i would say the big problem with this trilogy is that it wasnt thought of as a trilogy from the start. they kinda went in with no plan other than having old actors do cameos. the speeder scene seemed pointless as they didnt really do anything. it wasnt even a stall tactic. it was visually cool but that was about it. they added a scene to mock fans where the guy tastes the white power and says its salt.... because a lot of people said episode7 was just a remake of episode4.... which it wasnt it was more like a mix of 4-6 imo because yea was had star killer base which was like the death star in 4 but we flew inside it to blow it up like the death star in episode 6. yea it starts on a desert planet blah blah. so basically in this movie they wanted to be like "no its not snow, no this isnt ripping off Hoth at the start of episode5..... and yet it was because it had no purpose in being there lol. to me i thought this could have been a decent side movie but shouldnt have been part of what was supposed to be a trilogy. they really needed 1 complete grand story to tell over 3 movies instead i feel like we had a decent start a bad middle and without spoiling anything you will see the final movie imo is just scrambling to try and salvage the trilogy. honestly in the same way they added episode 4 to a new hope after the fact i feel disney could go back and in the very least remove this episode from the trilogy and replace it with something more fitting. rename this to be a side quest. though carrie fisher is no longer with us so... i feel like the disney+ shows are trying to do a lot of leg work to make this trilogy make more sense.

Chocolate chip cookies would have been considered a rare delicacy, as cocoa beans were rare and found only in the same part of the galaxy as the planet Anakura. Also, Luke did give Leia the dice. Remember that a point was made to see that Kylo Ren's hand was wet with rain from Rey's environment, meaning that the force allows the transfer of certain things, like water or dice.

I don't think is controversial that the younger generation tends to like the sequel trilogy. It was made for the younger generation (GenZ, younger millenials). Older folks like me favor the original Lucas produced movies that we grew up with and Disney deviated from his vision greatly so that is mainly why we give the sequel trilogy poor ratings.

This movie is polarizing, which means theres a 50/50 shot you'll really like it. Episode IX isn't polarizing, people don't like it.

In the final battle, Luke did a doppelganger. That´s a jedi trick to project him in the universe, without to be phisically.

Hi Emme!😊 If you take a close look at Luke as a projection he looks younger, and has no gray. The only part of this I felt did not belong was the casino scene. It seemed unnecessary. They could have found the code breaker anywhere else. Great reaction to the second Star Wars sequel, Emme!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

The scenes of the Island Luke was on were filmed on Skellig Micheal in Ireland. The native bird on that island is the Puffin, that's what they based the Porgs on. I'm glad you enjoyed this movie and I really liked what you said at the beginning of the video about keep the comments civil. Such a weird movie. The humour feels a bit more MCU goofy than Star wars, which has humour, but usually it’s a bit more dry. The bad guys all go down really easily. Hux, Snoke, Phasma, Kylo. Star Wars usually had dominant villains. No explanation as to who Snoke even was, or at least a good one…cough. Even though it’s a middle trilogy movie (and penultimate saga movie), it’s doesn’t leave much plot momentum going into the final episode. Like how Empire Strikes Back, Infinity War or Two Towers left you so excited as to what would happen next. Finn’s completely pointless side story. He went from a core character to a bit of comedy relief. Apparently the actor was really upset about this because he felt black representation was only used for marketing. That near final scene with the kid pretending to be a Jedi feels like a scene from a very final episode rather than an ending to a movie where non of the main characters have a resolution.

I felt like Luke’s character was assassinated. It’s one of the worst character assassinations in movie history. Even Mark Hamill hated how Luke was portrayed, I can’t say I blame him.

Yeah this movie is where the powersplit within disney happened and the Filoniverse started taking a much deeper course. I sometimes wonder if it wouldnt have been better for the series to come first to fill the void so they could have made movies with more backround material. But I dont know, maybe it would have been worse, who knows.

She’s literally watched EVERYTHING Star Wars in chronological order. She’s finally reached the sequels & particularly this movie. As somebody who’s only gotten into Star Wars in the last 10 years, this movie still makes me tilt my head with confusion over the story choices made here. Also, now I have to worry about fuel?!

I will be honest when I watched it in theatres I didn’t like The Last Jedi. I thought the heroes lost way too much in it. But to be fair I did think the same way when I first watched episode 5 “the emperor strikes back”. But after some time apart I started to appreciate it more. I think Johnson had a difficult task since the end of the force awakens set up Luke to have left in presumably bad terms which Johnson used to explain Luke rejecting the Jedi (or at least the old Jedi way) I find it ironic after the prequels people were screaming about corrupt the Jedi were but when Luke says it in the “Last Jedi” people are like “how could like say that?” Or “how could puke give up”? I mean when the truth that the people you looked up to we’re not as great as you were lead to believe wouldn’t you lose at least some faith?

This is my favorite Star Wars movie ever

For me this movie had this weird vibe that all men are evil assholes or idiotic morons while all female characters are amazing people with no faults. This alone didn’t sit right with me. The rest of the films issues just piled on.

I had to sit with this movie after first watch but I must say a came to love this movie. While not perfect, it’s highly underrated and misunderstood. It subverts all expectations, has the goofy Star Wars humor of the OG trilogy, has some great action pieces and really digs into Force lore and what it means to be a hero.

I love Luke so much in this, might be my favorite SW movie

Unfortunately, while Rian Johnson is a fantastic writer/director of his own material, his style gets very muddled when working in someone else's universe.

The thing that makes most of us hate this movie is Luke because he tried to kill Ben just for having a bad dream without thinking twice but he has no problem in redeeming Vader despite everything he’s done, even Mark Hamill himself said that this was out of Luke’s character

Whether you like it or not, there is no denying that this is the film that divided the fanbase. JJ Abrams had set up so much (while also borrowing so much), then Rian Johnson came in, ignored everything Abrams set up, and did his own thing while pandering to a minority of fans (if even they were fans) and calling the rest of the fanbase racist or sexist for not liking his film. All that being said, there are a few things I still like about the film: •The "your mama" joke •The Porgs •When Rey literally reaches out and Luke tickles her before hitting her with a leaf. •Yoda appearing to Luke (especially the same Yoda from the Original Trilogy) •Luke brushing off the walker's blaster fire. •How Luke died (not that he was killed off, but him becoming one with the force while staring at a binary sunset)
