In this video I explain my process for being prepared for music production in every way possible. Whether I'm mixing, producing, recording or creating, I have put in the work to be ready. Probably a series on this topic and related things.

Thank you sir your videos always get me through the day on my 45 minute drive/commute to work. Wake up to a dose of inspiration and great ideology. Highly appreciate the videos and your perspectives! Keep them going! Also, do you have a contact I could possibly get your opinion on a mix or two? I’m an instrumental artist who makes laidback modern-ish beats out of Arizona.

Can you do an episode on monitoring, room acoustics, etc? Our perception of sound has a tremendous impact on what we create and how we mix. Are folks wasting their time trying to make critical decisions in less than ideal rooms? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts and how you personally feel your sonic environment affects you and your work.

Really great video, great reminder that crystralises this wisdom in a strait forward way and i need to remind myself more of this. In a world wear GAS (gear aquisition syndome) is rampantant due to the every fast paced landscaped of audio plugins , this is a reminder that its not now many tools you have, or even the quality of the tools, its have a deep understanding with them and developing your own intution and when they are appropiate for any given task. Hope this comment was lucid im high afff xD boutta spend some time learning a new cool i just got 💀

You’re right about this, I was working on a production & my creativity went, not because I was fishing for patches & effects, but because native instruments decided to make it difficult to add 3rd party libraries that I bought to kontakt. Having to sort through tutorials, forums, & technical support k!lled my vibe since it was more of a “corporate” decision & not the usual bugs or whatnot. I love the technological advancement of software/hardwares but if it’s gonna be like this then it’s tough luck for us all.

Spot on. Goes for producers as well.. experienced and well versed producers will at the very least have the bare bones for the beat they are going to do with artist or other prod if they are collabing. Proper preparation is super important. “Down time” when not in session or completing a composition is time more suited for experimenting and finding new sounds samples effects etc

Hey Tony, this is a late comment on the video, but I would be very down for you to tell us who to watch in terms of mixing and production! Thanks for all the great videos ❤

The biggest help I have found is using Komplete Kontrol and making my own NKI patches, so I have an audio preview of each sound, it has knobs mapped to dial in the sound and do automation, and it is tagged of course so I can find an R&B synth lead, or a Synthwave bass in a matter of seconds, just select two tags, then I can listen to my custom made audio previews. This is golden...

You always have to be ready. You have to make hard decisions quickly and stand on them firmly but not aggressively My only rule unless it's asked do i record and mix in the same night. Ive done it, but i don't like it

I had a couple shots of tequila and ended up recording somebody on the fly. I usually start dry, but I knew where it could have gone before everything

Getting people to record physically is one thing, getting clients online is pretty rough. I made a new rule to finish everything I start. Out of 140 beats this year maybe I didn't finish twenty?

One of the benefits of being an "experimental producer" is that you +do+ get to 'claim' that formalizing-yourself-with-your-tools time into your real output/product. Flipside of that, ofc, is that there is generally a difference between being an "experimental producer" and being a "working/professional producer", lol.

For me its about the ideas, creativity the art. The rest like using quality gear in a studio to get it all sounding pro will follow. If the song/beat is not good and is disliked even by your friends, it dont matter how many convertors, neve, ssl, SP1200, MPC,s etc you have. YOU CANT POLISH A TURD.

deliberate moves only i tell myself everytime. no accidental sounds. all sonics must be thought of and heard prior to practical production of them. lol i actually want my artist hat, producer, engineer hats seperate to wear to keep me in the very concept of tackling audio responsibly. it is hard to seperate these quite clinical jobs and get stuff built. i figure just the notion of the seperate hats might help that...not aspiring to work on other peoples music, just want the best i can do on my own. it just has to have method. and then the method equates to your sound.

Hello there Tony, was listening to E A Ski today and he said that we should check you out and so I did. I like what I am hearing so far. My name is Danielle, I am a part of the E a ski family and have learned a lot from him. I live in Albany, and would like to know whether you provide hands on teaching for someone wanting to produce their own music? Or if you could recommend anyone in the NY area?
