The only reason people are negative on the idea is because they need to write it off so that they feel good about not considering it. They need to feel that there isn't any opportunity in it such that they feel comfortable "forgetting" about that particular idea.There are SO many ideas out there about "how to make money reselling" so it's no surprise that people desperately need a reason to THROW AWAY any ideas that they think aren't worth their time. They are frantically searching for something that might work for them and in that frantic search, they need to discard ideas ASAP. On the other side of things, your videos are there as a beacon of hope for people who actually want to sell books. Personally, I think it's wonderful. Books are magical items that are often underappreciated. I absolutely love that you have a passion for this and share it with others. I recently subscribed and looked forwarding to your content.

Hi Mel. You’re doing amazing and making great profits. ❤ In the UK the market is different because we have multiple booksellers on eBay that sell every book you can imagine for low prices with free shipping. So there is little money for the average bookseller to make with that competition. If we bundle books up the shipping price is high. So it’s difficult to find a balance. I’ve swapped to selling individual rarer books and niched down. Even our top end cookery books in the UK can be found on eBay supplied by ‘world of books’ for a few pounds with free shipping. The market is just different here. But your market is way better there so continue with your success 🎉you’re doing amazing. Just wanted to try to explain maybe where the differences come in. ❤

You are doing a great job , and more importantly, you're doing what you want to do and do it for you and your family. I have been doing eBay reselling for 18 years and let me tell you, people never want to understand, they just want to give their opinion without caring to see the work we put in behind the scenes. I stopped justifying what i do a long time ago. I make more money in a week than a lot of people (that tell me get a real job) do in a month for half the hours worked, but that's for me to know and them to overthink about and try to pull me down. I love what I do, and I can see you do also. I support, cheer on and am genuinely happy for anyone that pushes hard and has a supportive growth mindset. I am in Techs group and watch your zoom calls (not live yet) but I love hearing from people with the same mindset and desire to push hard doing what we love! Lets Go!!! Sam :)

Most retail shops are only making a 100% markup. Meaning buy for $10 sell for $20 or so. Retail selling new is usually a lower profit margin than reselling. Does anyone question someone opening a retail shop? Why does everyone think that just because it is reselling or selling 2nd hand that the profit are low? Keep going Mel, you are an inspiration for many sellers and many of us appreciate your information and enthusiasm. ❤❤❤❤

@BlissfulDee
@BlissfulDee 10 дней назад
As someone who worked in and managed retail stores in the US, I gotta tell you that it's been many years since markup was only double the cost. Most retail stores calculate it at 2.5 to 3 times the cost. HOWEVER, the overhead costs are usually so astronomical that the profit is nowhere near even making back 50% above cost.

Mel, first time commenter but long time watcher here! I am in Texas and I have noticed that books sell for quite a lot less in the US than in Australia. I Iooked up the Audels books wihile you were talking and they are selling from $25-35 here with one sold comp for $34. Everytime I comp a book thinking it will be a winner, nope. Very rarely able to find books that will bring in what you are able to sell them for. I imagine it would be very difficult in the US to have a book seller niche but I imagine it can be the reverse for other niches. I would love to sell more books. They just don't bring in the profit here.
@swtcaroline93
@swtcaroline93 День назад
I'm in TX too, and came to say something similar. Most books I comp are selling in the US for $2-10 by mega sellers. Also, I've looked at warehouse space in my area, and it's around $2k/mo. So I think people are just using the numbers they see in their area and it doesn't add up to what Mel is doing. I think it's awesome that it works for her. Also: I have almost every single Betty Neels book. 😁

Is that Thom prepping those discs ( surface cleaning/visual etc ) prior to dispatch and if so why are they not pre-sealed ready to go with all quality control checks already completed and picked off the stock bin locations! This way would eliminate the duplication of handling/checking time of the item perhaps. Unless the item has a reasonable high probability that it's not going to sell on it's own and may need to be re-sold into a large bundle format which could then mean that the early cleaning prepping process stage might work out being a less efficient way of doing things, given the high volume model approach to the business. Anyway just curious LOL. Thanks Mel for the video, you're doing very well and deserve all of your success!

Every place is different and I'm sure your viewers have different costs which cause them to be critical of your setup. You don't need to justify though you might think you do. Here in the US no way could you get a warehouse for less than several thousand. Books here in the US are not profitable the way they are in Australia, you are only going to make your kind of money with tremendous quantity or doing vintage/collectible books. I think people just like to be critical of others, especially those who are successful when they themselves are not. Kick 'em aside and you do you.

I dont think there is any issue with books - I think the "idea" from the no idea folk is reselling is not possible full time. The other thing people forget is anyone that is doing this fulltime with any PLANS to grow and build a long term business, there will be some heavy overheads and costs when getting the foundations in play (storage, rent, staff, materials, systems, processes, tools, and everything else). Overtime these should all pay dividends. Stuff the assumers Mel. I had a good rant about all of this the other week. The other thing to remember when people say "it isn't worth it for them" then thats a THEM issue. Youve got this and keep on keeping on. Keep kicking butt Mel.

It follows the very effective marketing of the major online bookstores in moving to digital. In fact you could argue all the online resellers/streaming services do it. Steam gaming sells you a digital version of a game. You can’t transfer ownership, once you’re dead those game licenses die with you. With media you guys sell, your encouraging people back to tangible ownership. There’s something really wonderful in opening a favourite book, sliding a CD into a player and listening to music and so on.

It may be that some of the comments about 'low profit' books come from viewers outside Australia. Looking around the world, Australia seems to enjoy much higher book values than elsewhere. Books you are selling at $30-40 I couldn't even cover the cost of shipping here in the UK. I try my hardest as a book lover to grow my book sales but find maybe 5 or 6 decent value books per year. I'm trying my hand with antiquarian books and having some success but, of course, sourcing is much harder and research is a lot slower without the advantage of barcodes! An indication of the price differentials UK/Australia is that I make fairly regular book sales to Australia. I'm told by my handful of returning customers that, even with shipping from the other side of the world, it is still cheaper to buy from me...

Books are low profit in the uk
@MrPaulMorris
@MrPaulMorris 10 дней назад
@@gwilliams1547And, as if to prove the point, when I returned to read your comment, what ad should pop up but Zifit--who offer pennies for the minority of books they'll actually take. Out of interest, I scanned a shelf of books from my own collection and, from 30, only 5 were 'acceptable' for a total of 75p. When bought the shelf cost me the thick end of £500! I've done price comparisons from time to time on books Mel sells for $30 and they come up on eBay UK for under £3 with free shipping. That's less than the cost of shipping for we smaller sellers who don't have the benefit of sweetheart volume desks from carriers.

@@gwilliams1547 which is what I was saying. As if to prove the point, when returning to read your comment, what ad pops up? Ziffit: we'll buy all your books for pennies and (help) destroy the second hand book market. Out of interest I once scanned a shelf of thirty books from my own collection. The 10 that were 'acceptable' to Ziffit rendered a total of 75p. Considering the total cover price when new was over £300 I decided to pass...

Last question, I noticed you have promotions turned on. What % are you paying?
@backfromburnout
@backfromburnout 8 дней назад
I do run promoted listings but my promoted rates change as I regularly change my promoted listing campaigns. I experiment often in my store on the promoted rates. I will promote anywhere between 4-10%. I experiment with flat fee and variable rates. I’m constantly watching my impressions and analytics to try and maintain sales levels. I do not believe the same promoted rates work for everyone. I think it’s very dependent on each store and everyone should be spending time in their own analytics and experimenting.

Free shipping within Australia and paid for international orders. Free shipping works out the same price though. I either charge $10 book + $10 post or $20 free shipping. Same same.

Huge thank you for your videos (love watching your take on selling & life in general) & talking about Technsports and the reseller group. I just joined today, and after listening to one old call, I've gone in and changed all of my listing titles. Could never understand why some of these things never sold. Wishing you all the success, please know that you are valued. ☺

Until you know the postage, weight, size limitations, ebay 15% fees - you can't work out the profit of a combination of book titles. We're lucky in Australia knowing all the satchel/padded mailer/box combinations have 5kg max weight allowance. So a set of scales and the packaging to see what fits before listing something is handy.

I sell on eBay but what kills books off for me is the postage it’s around £4 just to send a small book in the post as it has to go as a small parcel rate and people can go to 2nd hand shops and buy a book for £1 the uk postage is far too high but it will only get more expensive as time goes by ,all the best to you from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hello Mel from Michigan! I found your channel yesterday and can't stop watching! Do you ship to the states? How much is it or does it depend on the bundle? I love your channel. Keep 'em coming!
@backfromburnout
@backfromburnout 8 дней назад
I do ship internationally, my international post is set quite high as I don’t have the weights of all the books and bundles in the system and some of them are very heavy. If international buyers message me about discounts on shipping rates normally they will pay for the order and the shipping and then I can refund additional shipping costs if there was any.

Mel, I'm interested as to how you do your postage. At what point do you weigh the books with the envelope to work out the cost. From your videos it looks like you take the book off the shelf and then package it without weighing. Considering you only use padded envelopes would 5 kg satchels save you money ?
@backfromburnout
@backfromburnout 10 дней назад
I use flat rate padded mailers so they all have 5kg weight limits. I only have to weigh them if they’re multi orders that are heavy or international
@Scoutarella5168
@Scoutarella5168 10 дней назад
Hi didn't realise that the Australia Post padded mailers were up to 5 kg and were fixed price the same as satchels and boxes. So when do you work out what size envelope the books go in as this would before you print the labels?

It might be because people are looking at it from where they live. Like here in Canada, books wouldn't sell for that much and there is a lesser demand for them here. Also, to ship a book will cost a minimum of $15 within Canada. To rent a warehouse in Canada, it would not be anywhere near $300. I would guess a few thousand for that. For $300 you might get a very tiny closet storage locker. So maybe, people are looking at it from their perspective costs. When you said $300 for your warehouse I nearly fainted... haha Regardless, what you do takes a lot of work, not everyone can do it. I am always frustrated by friends saying I am lucky I don't have to work (I am also a reseller) That is what bothers me!

Perhaps that comment came from a person in the US, I have noticed here in the US that there are VERY LOW priced book sellers, we are talking like $3 or $4 with FREE SHIPPING! How do they do it? VOLUME! There are also a lot of US booksellers (and other media, too, like CDs and DVDs) that always have a sale going like buy 3 get one free with FREE SHIPPING! So perhaps that is why that comment has been made and continues to pop up for you occasionally Mel. It is near to impossible to compete with the volume sellers like that with those prices. But I do actually find some books that are worth more (I think books worth $20 or more are worth my time to list, if I get them cheap enough) and I do sell a good amount of books. I have also learned from YOU to bundle like authors or genres and make money off those deals. I remember you telling us years ago that you make far more profit in AUS that we do here in the US with book sales! Keep up the good work and much continued success to you & Tom! 🥰

Oh no books are a big deal, well at least to me they are . I will pay up if I have to. There's so much more knowledge which is not available on the Internet. I refuse to limit my education to just the Internet. Books offer more than just education or entertainment. Education is extremely valuable and books fall right into that category. I don't doubt you make a good living from selling people an education. Whether it's a cook book, love novel, DIY, self help, comics, coin collector, bible, poems, childrens book or a vintage jewelry identification book. Books will always have a spot in the market because we have people like you who keep them alive for people like us who love to read as an escape and to expand their knowledge. You are in a very good niche for sure.

No one making those comments has watched your videos. You regulary show good profit sales and large quantities of sales. OF COURSE, my book sales are pathetic since I don't know books, don't bundle what I have and CDs are the same for me, but obviously you and Thom do very well with your sales. So, book selling is terrible and cannot support a warehouse (for me) LOL

I just don't think people understand profit or business economics, and if it is even the worth of a small profit (which it isn't your case either). Like I always ask people, what is more profitable... Marvel and Star War brand with movies, figures, books, etc or the Candy Crush app company selling things at $0.99? Candy Crush is worth $8 Billion and combined Marvel and Star Wars is a $7 Billion business. People take their 9-to-5 job lifestyle and apply it to business, but they never understand that the businesses they work for spend on their employment and the increased profit made from that investment. And also for the viewer... I wouldn't want to store this large of a business in my house or rent/buy a large house at a higher per square foot then a warehouse to run the business. The correct place is in a warehouse space, especially at $300 a month.

Your reply to the comment you highlighted first I think you mistook the question. It I think is just an honest question as people wish to know. Being self employed is indeed tough, and you are obviously a success at it. These kinds of questions will be something people are curious about.
