It has been a while since I have done any sort of scrap wood project and since it's spring now, I figured what better time to share with y'all one of my favorite things to turn using it. So I picked out five decent pieces from my new scrap wood shelf and show you from start to finish how I turn one of my favorite items to make using just a few small pieces of scrap wood.

Wow - your “small” scrap wood is bigger than most of my biggest turning blanks! ✌🏻🎨☕️

I love them all, but the live edge with all that spalting going on is my favorite! Thanks Andrew!

That's a great way to use scrap wood. Beautiful planters! And thanks for all the tips, especially the one with epoxy inside of the planters. Cheers!

That live edge one is my favorite as well! Since I have made this video, I have been trying to keep all my live edge scraps for future planters now lol

You taught an old guy a new trick. I had no idea you could use epoxy on the inside of planters like that. I thought the chemicals might leech when exposed to water for long periods of time. Shows what I know. lol. Brilliant as usual my friend.

Im glad I could help! I will say, I typically would wait until full curing though before really using them or selling them but at the end of the day, I have never had a single issue with the epoxy. I made my dad a larger version of this idea for one of his plants a few years ago and its one of best growing plants he has. Maybe plants like the epoxy! haha

Andrew, great video. My two favorite pots were the short ones. Both because of how well they showed off the spalting and the natural edge feature. I tuned into this video for ideas regarding how to finish the inside of a planter. Thanks for the suggestions and demonstration.

Andrew, another great video friend! I had a couple laughs and a cringe. I am sure as being a wood turner, you know the cringe part because we work so hard not to make funnels ! Still very cool! I am always making a project and realize I'm out of something I need to complete it! Obviously, my favorite pot is the spalted natural edge. I have thought about using that nanotechnology wax for water protection over the resin on the inside. That stuff is so expensive though. I look forward to that outboard coring video! Thank you so much for sharing with us! I really like your content!!

Excellent video and great looking pieces. I had thought about trying some pots like this for all the succulents we have. (South Africa is succulent heaven) I think you could probably get away with using cheap 5min epoxy to line the inside of the pots.

As a wood turner and avid gardener the more calabash shaped bowls are my preference. The cylinders wouldn’t really work for most plants because they need more horizontal rooting area than depth. Nice idea.
@andrewmccarn
@andrewmccarn Месяц назад
I appreciate the feedback! Would they work better with something like a small cactus like I have here?
@nemoemanon6679
@nemoemanon6679 Месяц назад
@@andrewmccarnYes, most house plants need more horizontal space than vertical depth. That’s why most plant pots are almost as wide as they are deep. House cactus plants usually don’t get large so the shape isn’t as important.

I have a bowl waiting to be completed that just looks like it should be a planter/pot. I never even thought to use epoxy on the inside, I was wondering what I was going to use. I might have to give the epoxy route a try. Great video!

Go for it! It seems to work really well for lower maintenance plants like succulents but I would like to see how well it holds up to something that needs more consistent care. Let me know how it works out for you if you decide to try it out yourself!

I like the shorter pots best, spalted and natural edge. Don't care for music in turning videos.
