THIS is How Landscaping Can Bring a City to LIFE! | Clearwater County 62
Hello everyone and welcome back to the City of Van Buren in Clearwater County! For the longest time, the capital complex has been left feeling incomplete. Today, we’re going to change that - adding a reflection pool in front of the state legislature building, a number of pedestrian paths and pedestrian roads, a botanical garden, and an amphitheater. We’re also going to extensively incorporate quay walls to make the entire area feel much more complete. LOTS of landscaping today - enjoy!

Input for pedestrian road types: Cobble stone should be used on the main thoroughfares that would have been the original roads when the capital was first established, horse and carriage feels. Then the other streets should be the blue stone, which would make them look like roads added in modern times as the city expanded giving more access and connectivity.

I think the lore of this capital though is that it’s a planned city and was created in the 21st century. So there wouldn’t be “original” roads. But I do think that they would like to manufacture some history for their city and I could definitely see the city getting cobblestone streets for some and bluestone/sandstone for the others

45:30 Please Phil hold your hatred of cliffs for just once, that cliffside would have been a wonderful place to put a nature reserve or small forested area amidst all the other open areas, much like the area around the coast in Ashland. It could have even provided a good windbreaker to stop the strong winds you'd expect from being on the coast of a lake like Superior.

Maybe I'm just missing the visual assets somehow, but it seems like there aren't a lot of places to sit or hang out in the new areas? Part of encouraging people to want to be in an area is to make it accessible and comfortable, so benches, tables, chairs etc instead of just wide open blank areas might be good?

Hey Phil - love the build, for the quay walls, you can get 90 degree corners with connected nodes using node controller. Connect all four corners, then set the offset of each corner on the quays with node controller to zero. This gives you harder 90 degree corners. This may help with the pedestrian dipping and you don’t need your surface networks.

I think the bluestone is the best looking for road congruence but the white really has an administrative center feel to it. Additionally, it is really odd to have large city administration buildings without statuary. Lastly, that close to the seaside people are going to appreciate trees more than bushes to break up the cold weather winds that will roll in off the seaside. ETA: The cobblestone evokes a historic feel to me - especially since where I live the "historic" section of town is all cobblestone road. I think it would be nice to see a marketplace kind of build using cobblestone - kind of like a plaza marketplace where holiday festivals might be held that isn't just 'more commercial buildings'.

This is quite possibly my favorite build of the series. The end product, imagine sitting in the fountain plaza on the point, and you can see the Capitol, the observatory of the SSU, pieces of Van Buren, on a nice day Ashland in the distance, and the whole of the lake if you turn the other direction. That would be the spot where weddings, high school dance photos, etc happen, where you capture the entire essence of Clearwater County. And the reflecting pool? Absolutely stunning, even with the part mentioned above the reflection pool is the best part of the best CWC build. Don't know if I've suggested this before but Van Buren really should look at expanding into the hills by SSU. Pittsburgh-style houses up there would look incredible and can you imagine how valuable homes would be there, a short drive from the State University, views of the Capitol and the city, and the lake? Not to mention it helps Van Buren get the density that it really should have.

Awesome! Few suggestions: The road stubs you left on the sides of the administration building for parking, maybe they could be turned into actual parking roads? Also, you often fully surround grassy park areas with enclosed hedges, blocking anyone's access there. People love to have picnics and play ball in grassy parks, and restricting access leaves them empty, lifeless and monumental. Maybe remove a few of the small bushes in some places to provide access points for people?

19:25 It's just leftovers of movie studios using that garage to shoot car chase scenes. Nothing to worry about! Also I'm voting for the Bluestone. Bluestone would match perfectly with the government offices around Monument Square. Cobblestone is for more of like a European Styled or a rustic area.

Love the continuation of Clear Water County and Van Buren. HOWEVER, 2 major things (for myself) that need to be addressed. 1, the paths leading to the water from the capitol building in the middle are NOT square. (Looking at it from the building towards the lake) the paths dive left. 2, looking from the same direction the lights you added to one of the outer paths on the right hand side are a ton brighter than the rest. Also, having a fountain or 2 (of you can get sequence ones) in the big feature bond thing, i think that would look pretty cool.

As you're landscaping in this episode, I'm seeing a distinct lack of coniferous trees. If this is meant to be northern MN/WI, it really seems there should be more conifers. And I think they'd look very dynamic around the capital. And perhaps Clearwater County is at the forefront of doing more native landscaping instead of non-native species (see the pink trees).

Is there a reason you went with "pedestrian area" instead of city park though, for all this? It’s a big area and the strictness and comformaty would be boring quickly as a pedestrian, I think. Opinions: 1. Road-type cobblestone (got it perfect) 2. The lake is too wide and could be made into a polygon following a direct line between the capitol loop roads to the monument roads, narrowing it in general to provide more greenspace. 2a. Maybe add some park benches around the lake to add some assets to the big slab of concrete 3. The Botanical garden roads are neither parallel or straight, if you line up your screen in a top down view with one of the monument crossing roads you'll find that the park roads are at a jaunty leftward angle. 4. Every capitol I've ever seen proudly flies it's flags in an open area in-front of the building not hidden away in the shadows directly flanking the doors. Like out by the plaza might be better 4a. You might be able to use "Move-It Mod" to take a State of Superior flag and stick it on top of the domes of either the capitol, monument or both. 5. You could use the spotlights to light up the capitol building at night because currently it's a dark mass 5a. on of the botanical garden paths is much brighter at night than the other paths.

Couple tips: you can square off the edges of the quay walls using node controller, you don't need to use the extra concrete network. Make sure the two sides are connected at one node at the corner, then use node controller to drag the offset as far as it will go. The result will be a perfect right angle. Also, when using the new prop line tool, hold 'control' while clicking and you can adjust the settings without having to open the menu. You have to click and drag the green circles that pop up to change rotation angle, spacing, length, etc. and it's a bit faster (and easier to get the look you want, in my opinion)

Love the Grant Park vibes, also the crooked paths on the park remind me of how in DC in Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and Capitol Building are not perfectly lined up. It's completely fine and realistic. Now you just need to get some museums and war memorials throughout. WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Korea, etc., would be cool along the shoreline, tourists could ponder the meaning against the backdrop of the lake or looking at the capital building.

After the last update I finally was able to get back into my main save, what a relief. Two things I appreciate about CP's builds are that they always feel natural, where mine feel like a planned city out of Dubai or something. And how much time I have to spend on traffic compared to CP and he does not even use the traffic manager mod!

Awesome work. It looks brilliant and I see the local residents love it for barbecues. 😂 The pool is really unusual and makes it distinct.

LOVE the capital, the landscaping and pedestrianism took it to a WHOLE 'nother level! I also prefer the character the cobblestone gives the area. Thank you, CPP, and take care!

The park behind the capitol building feels extremely sterile. It's so manicured, symmetrical and bushes tightly placed that it feels like something to look at not experience. Having a small park, plaza, amphitheater, history museum, monument would make a lot sense and liven the place up.

I wasn't sure about the huge cobblestone promenades, but once you upgraded them to having trees, I thought that fit wonderfully. My vote would be towards cobblestone streets for sure. I gotta say though I'm not sure about those modern lights on the pedestrian streets. I could see having them on the sandstone streets, but I think you should BOB them out of the cobblestone (or bluestone) and replace them with something that looks a bit more antique. I love using Geze's Old French Lamps for important/high-class areas. I think the yellow light they give off feels so much softer and warm.

FYI, you can use the Node Controller to make the rounded corners sharp corners on the Seawall Quay. No need to use individual walls and then the surface network. Juts thought you would like to know.

As always, tons of fun to watch your builds progress. So, thank you! As a fellow midwesterner and Wisconsinite, I feel like the new “park” area around the capitol building wouldn’t be green field but would be almost entirely trees. At least that’s what I’ve always noticed around Janesville. Keep it up, Phil!

I feel like I the back park behind the legislature (Clarification: the one situated most in the urban area) could be a great place to use the over the road glass plazas along that center road if you want to add more things like food trucks and such to service impromptu meetings and negotiations or a place to get a quick coffee before a the legislature session starts, maybe even adding some of the small coffee from organic and local produce. Overall the build looks amazing so far!
