Its not just offenses. Defenses have clearly taken a step back. The Jazz have a better offense than the 2017 warriors with KD and Curry on paper. Yeah that isn't just because "better shooting now" and "offensive schemes" lets be real. Lauri Markannan is not leading a better offense than the 2017 Warriors with this Jazz team *IN* 2017. Only in 2023
@hektor7798

And the argument this guy uses against defenses not being worse is dumb. Especially the foul argument. If a team literally breaks the opposite players arm every time they get the ball and the other team doesn't even touch their opponents does this mean refs are softer when it comes to the first team? You can't just bring up FTA per game to make this argument because its about WHICH calls are made not how many. The other argument he made was the open shots thing. First of all he shows there is a difference so already there u can see the difference. It's a difference of about 4 shots per game when you look at how many shots teams are putting up in 2016 vs 2024. When you add the higher amount of slightly open, slightly contested, heavily contested etc it slowly starts to show.

The league is insanely talented, and also they allow 3 and 4 steps, moving screens everywhere, carrying, and offensive players can just bulldoze into defenders to get calls. Without how smart and proficient the league is, let's allow them to play a little defense, too. It'll make that talent even more exciting as overcoming a challenge is way more entertaining than overcoming nothing
@ogmusik2549

Why is the talent only on offense do players just not try on defense or is it the rules. It must be one or the other. Or are players just getting worse defensively

People who say the league allows traveling are mainly saying that because most of you don’t understand the rules. And that’s NOT me saying traveling calls aren’t missed, it’s just not happening at the level you all like to say it is. Just yesterday, on twitter, I saw an unbelievable number of people call a Jalen Brunson one foot Step-Through, a travel…a move that has been legal at ALL LEVELS of Basketball for decades. This take is getting ridiculous.
@jlui21
@jlui21 4 месяца назад
@@traybaldwin -- If you ever watch footage of the 1960s or 80s, the game was called wayyyy different. I've seen Lebron take 4 and 5 steps with a no call. Moving screen as OP noted happens all the time. I saw a travel on Kareem and Magic, and it was a pivot foot maybe that moved 1/4 inch. lol. By the 90s, the crossover got laxed with Iverson who pushed the envelope. All crossovers up until that point were tight, inside the body. Iverson went pterodactyl with his, and it was awesome. The biggest thing? Watch USA basketball in the international game. We struggle b/c the game is way more physical. It's also why Jokic and Luka said it is easier to score in the NBA. I will say that playoff basketball is great -- intense and again, way more physical. Those regular season 120-130ppg don't happen that often, and DEN vs MIA? It was 104 ppg vs 96.7ppg. Same rules, different physicality.

A re-defining and cracking down of the travel rule would pull offense back immediately. I understand the concept of the gather step, but technicalities and arguments about the semantics of it all has led to offensive players basically getting 3 steps AND the ability to draw a whistle by running INTO a defense and then flailing about. If the offensive player initiated the contact, the defense should never be called for the foul.

It feels like basketball shares the same problem with football in that defenders essentially just aren't allowed to do anything. Fouls exist for a reason obviously but its such a drag on the excitement when the games themselves takes a back seat for 30 FT attempts per game (or a game warping roughing the passer/PI call in footballs case)

Over the years, the talent among non-stars or role players has been getting better too. Guys like Derrick White, Aaron Gordon, Anunoby, McCollum, Coby White, etc. could be all-star level in the 90's or 00's (maybe). Even players below their level can have a big impact by just being a capable 3-point shooter. Defensively it's so difficult to pack the paint or focus on one player nowadays unlike before.

I think personally, its worth looking at hand checking and how many steps for a travel. Hand checking as you explained was to create more offense and would allow mor defensive physically. Traveling rules were modified during the Jordan eras to allow more dunks. This is why many players who play in the Olympics talk about the adjustment they need to make when playing international ball. If we have the best athletes that we ever had, i think preventing 2.5 steps and bringing back to 1.5 would also be in interesting change to give both sides more of an equal playing field.

The giant elephant in the room....officiating. If you try to defend a 3 and you breath on the shooter. It's a foul. If you somehow manage to not even breath on the shooter, he crumbles to the ground and the refs blow the whistle. Guys are basically shooting 3's like they are playing a game of horse. There is no fear of getting their shot blocked because they know that the refs are going to blow the whistle. So as long as a player is open enough to get a shot off, they let it fly. There is no fear of missing, or even being defended. The sad thing is, the way that teams have adjusted is actually good for the game. If the refs just called the game the way that they used to 10 years ago, scoring would go down, but games would be in the low 100's and not the mid 80's.

They play a sort of dice roll defense, where they track player movement but based on who is the worst shooter in specific areas of the court and then leave them for the shot. Numbers dont matter really.. getting 20 pts when league avg for a game is 80-90 is equivalent of getting 35 when your team scores 140. Only it was much harder to get the 20 than the 35. No hand check? Ok. Can carry and palm now? Ok. Can travel at will? Ok. It's actually pretty sad there's no one that can average 50. Can we have 19-18 scores again for the entire game?

I don’t like this NBA. Where everyone scores like 120 a game. I miss the 105-100 games. No defense all offense. Scoring is supposed to be hard not easy. Would be like in football the score is always 40-35. Would be like wow it’s so easy to score why can’t they score all the time?

Is the NBA really more popular than ever? I feel like 20-30 years ago, even casuals here in Europe could at least name MJ, Kobe or Shaq as active players. I have had multiple instances where people didn't know who LeBron was, or Steph... Many people who watched the game back then have long stopped following. The NBA has become an absolute niche product, even the freaking NFL is more popular in Germany when nobody actually plays American Football. The NBA definitely peaked with MJ over here.

they need to make new rules that makes the game fair for defense and offense. it’s incredibly boring if they make scoring look easy

Feel like your 6’3” guard is slowly going away guards are getting bigger. Eventually the day will come where the entire league is Chets vs Wembys. Anyone under 6’10” might have to find their own league, but who knows I’m high.

0:25 That's what I am talking about when people say Pistons are simply bad. The team can be eight seed if it is a few years back. It just the evolution of basketball is too rapid.

Let's be real now. Since the offense explosion is insane and disgusting to watch this season and teams are so "talented and better" right? Let's see if this theory holds up. Let's go back to mid to late 2000s era. You expect me to believe that the 2024 Pacers, Pistons, Nets, Kings, Thunder etc are competing for the best records and for a championship with this style of play that's plaguing the NBA? ESPECIALLY in the 2000s West?? If you can look at your phone, computer, tablet etc reading this with a straight face and tell me that teams are as elite as what we grew up with from the 2000s-2010s then I've lost all faith in humanity.

Video title should be renamed, this video only having 50K views is a CRIMINAL. Title should be "2023-44 Pistons are better than 2015-6 elite teams like Warriors (73-9) and Spurs (67-15) ------------ Evolution is crazy man, NBA players really too good these days. Everyone saying there's no defense nowadays not realizing that even while guarding their 5th man, you close up and it's a backdoor BUT if you slack off just a little it's a 3.. And that's from their 5th man. Previous eras you'll hide your stars on defense guarding their 3rd man or something (which usually just stand still at the 3pt or in the 2 area). A lot of ways to conserve energy but now.. The "worse" team is as efficient as the 73-9 Warriors.. I don't wanna hear they don't play defense no more BS. Offense is just way too good now.

It's completely obvious that people don't play defense anymore, especially when people like Marcus smart, win defensive player of the year and it was obvious I watched the entire video to make sure that you're going to say the opposite as so many people are trying to imply but defenses is dead

I mean, also nowadays, the NBA referees have been officiating really badly and also really poorly at times I mean Jalen Brunson literally gets hit in the face so many times and they don’t even bother calling it on the other team and it’s absolutely baffling. And how the officiating has been this season

6:05 This is the one and only statement that I disagree with. They were all great players. That Chicago Bulls team(s) from the GM to the role players were perfect. I don't think T-Mac, VC, or even AI got that kinda help.

I don’t mind the offensive explosion. The league could tone back on defensive rules though. Just let the game develop itself, laissez-faire.

I liked how in the video you weren’t biased towards one side. You showed stats and insights into why scoring has gotten so high. And well the regular season has always had players more relaxed, especially before the halfway. The game is still entertaining, and the there is so much parity in the league that we don’t know for certain who even the finals teams will be
