Honestly, I took the 20fps over potato eye bleeding every time. Now that I'm an adult-child I don't need to make the choice. edit: although I am a bit salty about the general downgrades to graphics now that I can actually afford a system that can run the game on ultra.
@@Ometen IKR. If I was in charge this game would of been a hit, have much higher player counts, and the game would actually work and not be broken as fuck. But then again players like you like the game in its current state: Stripped-down, broken, and dwindling player count with a life support dev team.
It still rocks back and forth, especially if it's over a hill, small rock, or otherwise on uneven terrain. The recoil from that cannon is pretty noticeable on the vehicle.
Because people who can't afford computers, and who have to run things on there potatoes cried the loudest to make it run better on there crap tops. This is the result. They fucked it up for the rest of us.
@@stahl1624 You would think modern hardware that came out 3 years after the game launched should be able to easily run Planetside 2. Nope, I'm even running on hardware from 2017, that's 5 years after the game lauched and I still struggle to maintain 60fps.
The size of the playerbase has considerably dropped aswell, first couple months there were 5k people playing at any given point, nowadays its only about 1.5k
The problem is that the downgrade didn't help shit. Low-end PC was never able to play this game better. Something like GT630 or lower level. The CPU performance was a much larger issue, but these tweaks never helped much on the CPU. It was useless, they just wasted precious work and now the game looks ugly, especially for 2021 standard. I remember the first optimization updates "OMFG", the game didn't look much worse. When they started to merge the PC and console version it started to lose a lot of things. Shaders, texture quality, etc. And they made stupid artistic choices like removing colors from Hossin and Amerish. Looks worse for no reason. At the end, we have a game that looked better in 2012 which is hilarious.
If they'd bothered to keep and improve these, PS2 would be one of the best games ever made. As it is.. it's graphics these days are on par with Team Fortress..
This is litarely... liratrly why I go back every now and again to play ps2... and once I get in I realise it dosnt look like this anymore... I'll never forget running across an open area in the deserts at night and getting into a fire fight and the shots lighting up the ground as they went ...
@@frostbite3511 graphics got dumbed down so It could "run smoothly" (which kinda does now), at least now It runs above 50fps at all times. Also there was a patch which i nevera remember the name which was about 2014, and that broke most of the physics in the Game, like those C4 that you right click as soon as you swap from your weapon, and they just glide infinitely in a random direction, just as a example. Also Wrel (og PS2 RU-vidr), got ahold of the Game somehow and now all he does is Focus every single resource and time into vehicle battles, which some people do like, but for the vast majority, being spawncamped by 20 tanks maybe isn't the smartest idea of how to get the Game fun...anyways sorry for the Rumble, im mad passionate about this game
@@frostbite3511 frfr, idk if they can't revert Cuz of the dx11 patch and the console downgrade, but It would be nice to have and see how It performs with my current pc
It is a bummer the graphics are reduced drastically today but at the end of the day I run on mostly low settings with a beast rig to get consistent 130 fps :P
i miss those days, the game felt way more epic than it does now, imho they should stop all progress on any new plans and instead focus all effort on undoing the dreadful "operation make faster game". no matter how much stuff has been added over the years i'd trade it all in a heartbeat to get 2013 PS2 back.
@@XonTheOne it didn't run great on bad PCs back then so they had a thing called "operation make faster game" were they turned off everything that made PS2 looks amazing, and basically dumbed down the graphics across the board, render distance, tracers, animations, lighting, ambience, everything got pretty much ruined, and its a shame because i could run the game fine on high'ish' settings with my £600 pc back then, i now have a 2021 £3,500 PC and the game looks like ass, even at 2k with everything maxed.
I remember during this time they added Physx but then was soon removed right after. I wonder why though because it was cool to see. DX11 update optimized the game by making the renders in the background at a lower resolution from a distance and enemies at a certain distance (past 500m I think) render at half the framerate to increase performance. The game was still actually a graphical demanding game at that time, it's hard to believe that this game is still alive up to now. I'm also still playing it. But now with a better computer than when I was 13.
@@mypfpiswhatourphonesees4294 Physx is a particle fluild simulator. It adds more particle effects to the game. Like explosions and the 'nanites' movement in the air.
I miss some of the old bases. Abandon NS Offices was fun on off-peak times with smaller fights. Large zergs could be farmed directly from Mao Techplant.
"Huh? Lockdowns? Pandemic? What are you talking about? What is Coronavirus? Dude, come on! The Vanu are pushing back our frontline, get in the Sundy, let's go!"
Damn... First time I played this game was back in 2014 and occasionally played it again for few mohnts about 5 times since then, But I didn't notice this downgrade at all. Yeah sure, game runs smoother then ever, but there are things that feel better in this footage than other things in current Live version.
Indeed, the game looked good in those time, and I think in this footage not even ultra graphics (maybe not even high). I had a quite outdated PC in 2013 and I recall that in the mass battles I had fps drops below 30 ) I haven't played Planetsaide 2 from 2016 or so, maybe I should return in it some day...
@@randomgamerdude34 there was an upgrade from DirectX9 to DirectX11 back in 2019, plus new physical servers with more memory, capacity and better connectivity, so big battles 96 vs 96 are fairly between 40-50fps ultra settings, medium-large fights 60 vs 60 are above 60fps with GeForce 960M on 90Mbit/s connection.
the game looked so much better back then, and according to most of the threads i read on reddit and also most of the old benchmark videos of ps2 i saw on youtube it used to run better too lol. i have an i5 4590 and back in 2014 with this cpu you can get around 50-60 fps in big battles at high settings, but nowadays i play on mixture of medium and potato for a balanced gameplay (mostly favoring performance) and i still get dips to around 30 fps in big battles. Bruh
@@speedyazi5029 what CPU and GPU do you have? its most probably because you have a newer gen components, since the reason why they added that update was because they wanted the game to run better for future hardwares.
@@mypfpiswhatourphonesees4294 My GPU was new relative to PS2, it's a 1050 2GB vram and I have an ancient CPU i7 920 2.67Ghz. All I know is that me and many people got better frames and found the game way more enjoyable than it was before, despite it looking really pretty.
@@ItsMoorbinTime Planetside 2 isn't like your normal games. Its total warfare. If you WANT to camp on a mountain and snipe you can. Its total warfare. Its not COD
TheSHADESofReal I know mate I have 800hrs. I get PS2 is meant to be a sandbox and you should be able to do what you want (like camping), but all camping promotes is aiming and nothing else while preventing other players doing what they want. That teaches players a bad lesson about positioning and movement. Why go around in CQC or even medium range with good aim, movement and game sense when you can just sit and aim from 600m away. The kill cam means a sniper has to shoot and move, not shoot, shoot and shoot again (which is how it should be). I consider it still camping because you stay in the same area, but now you get punished if you are lazy and don't adjust your position (even slightly), so it takes more skill and I'm happy with that. It doesn't take much to move 30m to the left but at least it keeps gameplay interesting for the sniper and people trying to kill the sniper. Also, I think the kill cam help identify cheaters, it very rarely comes up but it helps me confirm if someone ischeating and not just good at the game.
Seriously though, the graphical downgrade aside the game in its current state is superior in every way. Don’t let people with nostalgia glasses trick you. I was there, and there were no alerts, the gun models were all the same, and the gun play was terrible because of the crazy weapon sway. There weren’t many people running the game at high settings like this, we were trying to stay above 20 FPS in a large fight even tho our computer met the required specs. Some crashes required a router and modem resets, and crashes were frequent. “I fell through the world” Most people would get a crash at least every other session. But we stuck through to bring planetside where it is today, and it’s in a great place, with an even grander future ahead of it.
@@Shiggy_ nVidia particle effects were removed because of crashes. Maybe the same with some of the shell effects etc, but I bet weather effects were removed because so many try hards complained that they did not like random negative aspects impact their stats. As in it being harder to see in a blizzard etc. Which is kinda BS, if you ask me.
@@Lobos222 All the graphical downgrades happened in a short span of time to allow for more player retention as there was a huge gap between people with top of the line computers and people with lower end ones. It was thought that this would keep the population up, while the tech caught up. It’s pretty much worked. And there was no large out cry of vets who wanted to get rid of weather effects because some dust got in their eyes. The game had serious problems back then that made the game sometimes unplayable. Though that’s starting to be the case again with the current state of the servers
back then there used to medium to longe range combat but ever since the updates u can basically only do small range combat like CoD because the gun damage decreases a lot over distance now
Idk about you, but I still get sniped by a dude with a AR at mid range. These types of cool battles still happen but not as much because well, it’s a pointless battle that achieves nothing for the faction.
They definitely have declined, there are other people who have commented on this video that explained exactly why, but the TL:DR was optimization. The game ran too poorly for people without NASA-grade computers and had a lot of the visual effects removed to compensate.
The game still looks like this, I think the only thing that really changed were some particle effects like explosions and bullet trails show up when you're directly being fired at. I dont think people run the game at these settings anymore cause its not really advantageous to do so now.
@@ObakuZenCenter I played since closed beta in 2012, I can't say the game looks too much different on ultra, the only thing that majorly changed was how certain effects were changed during the OMFG update.
I loved it but man, I'd rather play a stable 60 frames than in lag. No matter how great the game looks it will be a horrible experience when your frames are chopped up
@@durakeno5575 still it had one of the best implementation of physics to date and it still would hold up if we got back better textures, effects and physX... Together with the massive scale you can call it a next generation game. Not only graphics, but gameplay wise.
Which server was this on? I was on Mattherson originally as NC. Getting buried by TR zergs and then bitchslapped by the best squads all being VS...good times, man, good times. :)
Because they hardly have the dev team to do it and the code is so spaghettified that the few incompetent devs that are left dont dare touch it in fear of bricking the entire game. So the only thing they can really do is either delete and re-do, or add on. They cant modify or roll back.
God I miss such great attacks with heavy vehicle support. Galaxy drops, tank sieges, sunderer rushes... too many COD players whined about vehicle presence "ruining good infantry fights". Now you rarely you find anything like this. Thanks Wrel.
The greatest loss here is that bolt action animation lol. I'm a sucker for animations and a lot of them made it really difficult to enjoy this game, but none are as bad as the awful reach-around bolt action animation.
Nostalgia is great but the game can look just as good today if you have the settings high. The issue back then still remains, you need a quality PC which I didn’t when it first game out, if you want all the effects high.
@@sillybilly121212 I didn’t mean to imply effects hadn’t been nerfed, just the game can look great now as it did back then, if you have a good enough PC.
@@SethMace Then please do share this otherworldly knowledge of how to make it "look great now as it did back then" because turning everything up on ultra doesnt even come close.
@@TheHuffur “otherworldly knowledge”, what are you talking about? I’m not sure what the issue is here, my point is the game can still look good/great - you just need a decent PC to run it, as back in 2013.
@@SethMace The issue is: "Nostalgia is great but the game can look just as good today if you have the settings high." Because its not true, the game cant look just as good today if you have the settings high. Now you are saying the game can still look good/great and I guess it can, its more of a opinion though as some might not think it look good while others will think it looks really good, its quite a big difference between what you originally said though.
@@TheHuffur I don't see how there is such a big difference between my two statements? "the game can look just as good today if you have the settings high" Vs "the game can look great now as it did back then"? My (subjective) opinion is the game can still look good/great on ultra, if you've a good enough PC. I did not say the graphics haven't been nerfed or technically it's not an inferior product - I don't really care because honestly, when all hell is breaking the game is epic and looks great. Not that any of this matters for many players as they use potato settings anyway.
