I wish you would have mentioned that it was actually Chan who brought the members together to create the group rather than JYP

I watched the National Geographic video doc about a Kpop several years ago when SKZ was nothing but a dream for Bang Chan. I was wondering if that cute boy got accepted. As it turned out, Cube didn’t accept him. JYP didn’t accept him either. LeeKnow said in one of his vlogs that he didn’t hear back from JYP so he went back to the dance troupe and school, continuing his dancing and finishing schooling. JYP called him out of the blue a few months before the survival show asking him if he’d be interested as a new JYP trainee. He was surprised but said of course. HAN recalled seeing him on JYP building the 5th floor. He was awestruck by LeeKnow’s beauty (conceding to the fact that he’s not the best looking trainee in the building). Because he has been dancing professionally, he easily passed the standard JYP dance exam in 2 weeks. When Chan looked for male trainees to be SKZ members, other than 3racha, jyp male trainees at the time were not ready or too green (see Hyunjin Felix and IN in survival show). JYP management revisited audition archive to find a good dancer (LeeKnow). They also found out about Kim Woojin not debuting with NCT. Although Chan persuaded JYP into buying his SKZ vision, he conceded the fact that SKZ needed a more ready vocal and a good dancer. 3racha are all rounders that could debut as a trio. However that wasn’t Chan’s ambition. He wanted a bigger group to be more commercialized. He was confident about the 4 trainees he handpicked, seeing their work ethics, character, and potential first hand. But he agreed with JYP that to take off SKZ needed more members. LeeKnow and Woojin were parachuted into the survival show with minimum JYP training time. LeeKnow was eliminated simply by not having enough time to train in singing and rapping. Felix’s lack of Korean langauge skill and his short amount of training sank him, too. Felix was a risky pick imo. He’s one redeeming quality was his super distinctive low bass voice. Chan was banking on that to give SKZ a trademark and a selling point. His gamble paid off. Felix became a big SKZ draw when casual listeners heard of his voice and saw his angelic face. To be honest, when SKZ first debuted, they were green and like babies. 3racha carried the weight mostly. Thankfully Chan did pick the right members. Hyunjin, Seungmin, and Felix improved so much in a short 2 years. Now IN is catching up, too. LeeKnow is also a good company choice. He’s different than SKZ kids due to his experience as a working dancer therefore he’s not sheltered. His personality is also a marked contrast with fetus SKZ members (until Seungmin revealed to be just as cunning and people smart, despite his goody two shoe image). Woojin turned out an odd man out. He’s been a nomad trainee cycling thru several agencies. He’s older and not so innocent. Although the exact cause of his dismissal is unclear at this time (I hope Chan will write a memoir one day in his old age to tell us all about his life and experiences prior to SKZ, during SKZ, and post SKZ), I find that SKZ became a tighter and better group after his departure. Kids grew up and stepped up nicely. Lee Know took his role as HAN protector seriously (HAN being happy to have LeeKnow close by is easy to see). At the moment, IN is not done finding his adult voice and confidence fully yet but it is around the corner. SKZ will only become better and tighter. I seriously am keeping a close watch on this group because it is thrilling to join SKZ ride.
