That was the first DC clip on insta about the CW shows that didn't make ne cringe. It just felt so Superman and I love how Tyler can capture the character without looking just like him. In my opinion Tyler is the Superman the modern day deserves.

I think in every version but idiot Snyder's version Clark's mom made the suit. In Lois and Clark he also said his mom made the suit.

The 1978 movie didn’t really get Superman though. In those movies, he’s just a guy who saves people and smiles at them. No depth or struggle whatsoever. To make matters worse, he gave up his powers for selfish reasons in the sequel. Who is this? Superman in the show is almost entirely like the comics; he’s a sympathetic Everyman who has actual moral values, not a wisecracking Mary Sue that just preaches about the safety of transportation. Superman in the show is what Zack Snyder’s Superman would’ve become if Zack had finished his five-movie arc for him.

That last line "that it does not occur to him" sums up Clark/Superman completely. That's why people love him.

What I love so much about Superman and Lois's Superman, though, is the clear line dividing Superman the hero and Clark the dad, and the simultaneous perfectly clear comprehensibility for that division. As Superman, he's massive, iconic; he's smiling, almost joyous, almost innocent, moral, helpful, strong, certain, and wholly undivided in his purpose. He is a *superhero* in the very best sense. And then he goes home and becomes Clark the dad...and though his love and devotion to his family is immediately apparent, he's also uncertain, not totally able to connect with his children, with imperfect judgment, occasionally being too harsh, occasionally too filled with worry to think clearly, though ultimately just as undivided in his purpose to be the best father and husband he can be. It should feel like some fake private vs real personal character split, but it comes across as equally sincere--and that sincerity is the ultimate emotion the actor must portray. Superman's awesome sincerity must always shine through, and Tyler Hoechlin absolutely nails that aspect.

The uploader made a great point about Superman being an alien that holds a mirror so humanity can examine themselves. That's what Superman should always be. Superman is not about the powers, it's about the person.

If everything goes what I think they are doing in The Batman, I hope Robert Pattinson can capture that feeling off Batman in the future. That look Bruce gives to Mitchells son during the funereal and SPOLIERS IF YOU STILL HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET the fact that Batman realized that his methods might actually make make Gotham worse and need to change his ways shows that they might gives us the Batman that will console a crying child. And I hope there is someone who can do the same for Superman too

Henry Cavill being himself is more Superman than when he's playing Superman. Snyder sucked the Superman out of Henry.

Yeah his characterisation in those early episodes is why I stopped watching the show while drunk because it was getting halfway good.

As much as I like Kill Bill, they got Superman wrong in there. Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy, is just an act; now Clark Kent, the boy scout from Kansas, that's who Superman really is.

We have seen how cw shows failed before but seeing the production the crew behind it all, I feel hopeful that the series could end up being better than some of the best things the cw has produced such as smallville and arrow.

Season 2 really got into its stride.

I LOVE that last line, it showcases what superman really is.

I loved that show and that line in the 90’s as a teenager… Until I grew up and it wasn’t the cheesy 90’s anymore and realised the opposite is the case. Clark Kent is how he hides by blending in with the regular people by pretending to be a shy, weak, kind of useless and pretty much a Canadian sad sack. Superman is who he is when he isn’t pretending to be a beta klutz, a kind of bumbling nice guys finish last, and is that way to fit in because that’s how he views humans. If he thought average humans were gym rats, and powerlifting jock bros Clark Kent would be a protein shake drinking meat head who spends his time discussing leg day, his squat PR and checking out the ladies.

@@Nevyn515 this comment sounds like someone who has never once seen or read a single thing about or including Superman. Clark is absolutely who he truly is, in every single depiction shown. Clark is not at all a costume or an act. He grew up for 20+ years as Clark Kent. Superman is always the costume. Bruce Wayne is more of who you've described, and that's because the real Bruce died in Crime Alley with his parents. This is even shown directly in the comics when they both meet Wonder Woman and she has them all introduce themselves with the Lasso of Truth. Superman introduces himself as Clark Kent, Batman introduces himself as Batman.

One of my favorite episodes was when Lois ends up with Clark's powers. She goes to him upset, saying she is a failure because she saved a crashing plane and as a result was too late to save a village from an avalanche. Clark tells her she didn't fail - it is what he experiences daily.

I was going into watching the first episode of Superman and Lois thinking that I would like it if it was going to be better than supergirl but I was pleasantly surprised by how it was not just Clark then all the other characters like supergirl was. The side characters are actual characters not just characters in a scene because it makes sense for those characters to be in a scene. The side characters have story arcs

I have a completely different reaction. It made me throw up a little in my mouth. I can't stand this kind of Superman. Luckily I got Injustice to wash the bad taste out of my mouth.

Like, it's fun to see what would happen if Superman turned evil, but if you know anything about Superman, you know his love of humanity isn't dependent on Lois - Justice League Dark Apokolips War is a better characterization on that regard, but unfortunately the movie has many other issues.

@@falkyrie5228 I find Superman far more compelling when he is the antithesis of boyscout Superman. The Injustice version, Justice Lords from DCAU and my favorite Red Son. I find it a more realistic take on a character with unlimited powers rather than "I love humanity because I grew up sheltered on a farm" version of Superman. The two versions I enjoyed the most were MoS for obvious reasons and his portrayal in The Animated Series. In TAS he was most compelling when pushed to the edge, nearly killing Darkseid or beating Mongul to a pulp.

This is why I love Superman. Literally take away his powers, but his heart is what really makes him admirable and lovable. He'd last just as long as Batman with the same core.

Exactly. The Donner films are what popularized the Big Blue Boy Scout image of Superman. Hollywood needs to go back and watch George Reeves. That's a no nonsense interpretation of Superman and Clark Kent alike. That Superman is tough and means business. What crook wouldn't be afraid of him based on attitude alone?

Yeah, I still don't understand why people think Superman is "too cliché" and whatever for being too perfectly good when... most heroes all end up being that deeply flawed, wounded, tortured, broken fighter ? Most heroes have been anti-heroes for decades, with nobody truly doing good for the sake of goodness. Superman is actually an incredible exception (and they even made it realistic by making him a different species.)

Superman is one of my favorites because he’s “generic” and like you said stands for good and justice. That’s all we’ve ever wanted from a Superman. Leave the darker and edgy personality to Batman and the Gotham cast.

@@glowingmonster I think it in 1 part touches upon our boyish relationship to our mother, maybe for others the simple raw & pure relationship they would like to have had with their mother as boys. When Clark made that statement, he made it like many of us would (or would like to have) at 7 - 12 years of age. It was an unashamed statement of innocent truth, coupled with a boyish pride for wearing what a loving mother made for him. I think another part of why so many responded as they did comes from a deep interior yearning for the presence of that strain of innocence and cleanness within our world, and the kind of quality it can/could bring to our lives.

As Zod says - he actually cares. It is both his greatest strength and greatest weakness.

When are you referring to as "these days"? Friday Night Lights' Coach Taylor was I guess a decade ago. Archie's dad in Riverdale was more this archetype too. Stiles dad in (MTV's) Teen Wolf. There are also perhaps not biological fathers, but father figures that would fit too. More recently the father/father figures in Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, Mixed-ish, and the Wonder Years reboot, which are family shows. It all depends on what you're watching.

I second that recommendation for supersons. It's so freaking adorable.

Superman (2016), written by Peter Tomasi, is great at getting this, though people tend to forget about a few of the arcs that are fairly boring. I highly recomend reading it. Jon Kent as Superboy was awesome, before Brian Michael Bendis decided to shake things up for reasons I don't really get. Don't get me wrong, Bendis has done some cool things. Action Comics under Bendis has had some great moments focusing on Clark Kent the reporter, and I thought that a lot of the stuff around the arc in Superman (2018) where Clark reveals his secret to the world was really fun (no idea if that's been retconned yet or not). One of my favorite depictions of Clark Kent is in American Alien. Unfortunately, that was written by Max Landis, who was since outed as, at the least, a huge scumbag, so I feel weird recommending it, but All-Star Superman and Superman For All Seasons are two other great Superman stories.

Ok so I haven’t seen the CW show, but do they ever explain how Clark Kent is able to have children at all? Ya’know cause he’s a completely different species than Lois.

It is how you tell a compelling story with someone of Superman's level. You give him a situation his powers can't solve. I am not talking about an enemy to fight, I am talking about family issues and the like. He can't solve that by using his powers.

Only amplified by the fact that they *could* absolutely recover it now that somebody has figured out the audience doesn't want to see Superman moping in black and white. They *could* create a new 'classic' iconic megablockbuster with Cavill as the best established actor for the job. Signs are saying they'll let it slip though, and just reboot the character for the what...5th time in 20 years?

It's not that Henry got the short end of the stick. I think he just doesn't have that kind and warm personality that Superman needs. He's too "perfect" and contained, and comes across as arrogant and cold. IMO

"Grumpy person who does good things" is kind of what I see from Henry Cavill's Superman. Ironically, that's the vibe I get from his performance as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, and people LOVE Henry as Geralt. Granted, I think if he got better direction in being a super goody two shoes guy as Superman, he'd be better at it.

Geralt always has to choose between two evils, despite not wanting to choose at all. That being said, I actually think he's a tad bit too good looking for the role. He just...doesn't look like a normal person. Like if you see him as Superman, I feel like his presence and appearance is such as to where he couldn't properly hide it. The guy in Lois and Clark looks like a person you could see on the street. Just...CW-ified.

I think Henry Cavill could perform a great Superman, because the few instances where we don't see him being mopey in MoS and JL, he seems like he could play a very down to earth guy. His euphoric smile when he first takes flight in MoS makes me think he can do it

At the moment I'm making my way all thru Smallville (haven't seen it for ages). The first few years were the best. Tom Welling has the face and body and attitude. Also liked Lois and Clark for the humor and his parents' involvement in a different way from Welling's parents. Never heard of this one. I no longer have a TV which is probably the reason. But I don't like this guy's face (sorry Tyler, never heard of you before but you don't look right).

I have become extremely tired of everything being cynical. for the sake of "realism". What happened to uplifting the audience? Giving the audience hope, or a sense of love for the world? I will ALWAYS choose to read something like John Carter over Game of Thrones because John Carter gives me a model of someone I want to be like. The main character is a good man whom I want to emulate. In Game of Thrones killed the hero. GRRM spat in the face of goodness and is obsessed with ideas that no one cares about or even doesn't want to think about.

Agreed. That's the reason why so many characters have no urgency and motivation. Because they are rail-roaded to several locations without their control. Logic doesn't matter, character choice doesn't matter, if the plot requires them to be there, the director will teleport them there even if it doesn't make sense.

Yeah, I could never buy Clark's internal conflict in the DCEU because it likes to pretend his alien nature somehow overrides his 30 years of human nurturing and socialization. It didn't help that Warner Brothers decided every single one of their superhero properties had to be made dark and intense, because The Dark Knight made a fuck ton of money back in 08, even if dark and intense is at odds with the nature of some characters, such as Superman.

@@TheKennethECarper well, 30 years of human nurturing and socialization doesnt make him a real human too. he needs to accept that he is alien on the outside and human inside. not to mention, tyler's world is vastly different from cavill's. in cavill's, the world isnt a big fan of aliens, especially aliens that can cause massive destruction. why wouldnt he need to figure out himself and others? thats how you grow up, by figuring things out. if you dont want him to do that, then you are denying his growth. and snyder's dc movies aint dark. it has dark moments, but overall they aint dark. i prefer the term realistic.

@@TornaitSuperBird superheroes have always dealt with real world problems and ideas, some even simbolizing those, civil war came out after the twin towers attack, to portray the lack of trust in the government, the joker has been updated to represent societies greatest fears in each generation, carnage s design was to ellude vih in the 90s, wonder woman from the start dealt with sexism, doom patrol and xmen were created with the idea in mind of portraying minorities and how the world treats them, there were war oriented comics during world war 2, some even depicting hitler, injustice comics are shown to portray different idiologies corresponding to the death penalty, the very existence of superheroes is political in the sense that discuss how and why a person has a right to go against the law to do what is right, and the superhero comic industry as a whole have explored this idea for decades. And there are so many other different examples. And I'm not saying this cuz I like Snyder's rendition to Superman, its not my fav by any means. What I'm saying is that portraying comics as they have never touched on this issues and that they just started recently is ignoring lots of how the superhero comic industry even started to grow, saying they have never tackled on political issues is not true, again that have doing that for decades, some like wonder woman has dealt with sexism till the 40s. And I'm not saying superhero comics can't be an escape there are comics aimed to different publics, and people consider an escape differently from one another, but again it is not wise not to recognize superhero comics have always dealt with things like politics, and a sense of morality as a whole, superman(which this video is talking about) as a DC pillar, part of DCs trinity, of course has done that, mirror and critic society, superhero comics they have always portrayed the world they lived in at the time, and they will continue to do so. Edit: I do agree Snyder wanted to give a "batman taste" to his universe. And even tho batman is my fav superhero and has been all my life, literally for as long as I can remember, I was 4, but I'm aware not everyone is batman and can function as such, characters like Supergirl and superman exude light and hope, and weren't meant to be as dark, and don't really work in the same way batman does

I think Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man is under-estimated. Tobey is a wonderful Spider-Man because Tobey is a wonderful Peter Parker and makes the character and his alter-ego indelible.

I'll admit, he DOES NOT radiate "nerd on one side, man who can bench press the sun on the other" energy, but that line was so perfectly Superman, I'm gonna check this show out, and hopefully it's not another CW shitfest!

YES I absolutely feel the same way. I was a doe hard Flash and Legends fan for a while but both shows have kind of run their course I feel. Until S&L came out I stopped watching all the shows completely.

i would say the only good parts out of all the 3 main ones are: Flash season 1,2,4,6a Arrow season 1,2,,5,7a,8 Legends season 2,3,5 Those are all the good seasons

@@riduanaqil1452 Supergirl start was meh then improved then got to a point after a season of superman as a character that it became unwatchable. ALSO I Wish Gotham had connected to CW verse. It was a beautiful show!

@@NCBCSPRINGRETREAT he just doesn’t feel like Superman. Superman is the most human among humans even though he’s a alien. The DCEU Superman is a reluctant superhero he’s unsure if he should even be Superman and that is out of character for superman. Superman does what he can and help who he can he was raised by humans and they raised him to help other people. Superman would have never let his dad die like he did in MOS and he would never second guess wether he should help people or not he would help them even if they hated him because he is simply the best and the most human among humans.

i would advise you to watch elseworlds and some of the scenes of superman in crisis, as that kind of sets up this show.

if you read the comic you will see superman is a lot more complicated than what people normally think. The reason why superman is viewed as boring and bland, is because recent mass media betrayals of him in the last 20 years has been boring and bland. In the search to evolve superman, people forget who the original character represents. Lots of time change is good, like Frank Miller's Batman and MCU's Iron Man, but it doesn't apply to everything.

I have always advocated that there is no need to make him dark and edgy to be relatable. If you'd allow superman to marry and have a family, it would give him real personal stakes and make him relatable.

I think you nailed it. Tyler is absolutely a great Clark. Tom Welling saved the character into the 21st century, but Tyler was able to integrate the innate goodness of Clark with the uniform of Kal-El.

He identifies Earth as his home, spent most of his life among humans rather than in an ice fortress and his memories are fully brought back by hugging his family in his childhood home. Hes more Clark than Kal.

Agreed. This and the Snyder Cut is refreshing for portraying the good Superman. Evil Supermen like Homelander, Omni-Man and Brightburn are played out.

Bvs was an absolute flop... I was so disappointed they tried fitting multiple comic storylines into one movie just to catch up w/ marvel. Worst decision ever

@@gavinclements482 Yeah Lex Luthor didn't have to be there. Batman and Superman already had a good conflict. Lex was just there to create Doomsday so they can shortcut the team-up. It's a very obvious business decision instead of a creative decision.

But superman is technically godlike in the comics.

Snyderverse Clark is fine and his relationship with Lois (One of the main things I cared Superman) is Great. the Main Problem unlike with Tyler's Superman is Synder main problems with Superheroes Films is that he doesn't understand Superman if's that make any sense lol. it's the same problem with SynderVerse Wonder Woman and Batman.

That's a Superman that is base of Hope and Light while Synder's Superman isn't. It's odd cause he has a Decent Clark Kent but the only thing that Synder's Superman is missing is Superman.

@@Spidervenom23 You can't just be born with hope and light, you have to feel like you want to be that. Snyder's superman is in a world where people shame him for trying to help out. He can't be hopeful when a crazy bat is trying to kill him. Heck even the DCAU superman was dark at times because superman is a MAN and a man has his moments of anger and moments of sadness because that is what superman is, human. The way hes explained by average superman enjoyers is that he has to always smile and if he doesn't then he isn't human.

@@lisa.222 while I don't like the show itself, I do like the characters from it. Kara, Winn and martian manhunter are my favourites. These 3 are bloody wonderful in all the crossover episodes.

Can I just say though? The guy who played Superman in Lois & Clark looks like a cosplayer. And I’m not just talking about the crappy costume. He legitimately does not look like Superman at all.

I loved Lois and Clark, well at least the Lois part of it. Teri Hatcher will always be my favourite Lois.
