I agree wholeheartedly.. Superman and Clark Kent seemed like completely different people.. he made the mild mannered reporter alter ego seem like a believable disguise. In a way no one has been able to since.

Martin Kuliza you have no idea what you're talking and so does the other dude. Sean Connery set the standard for the suave gentlemen spy that is James Bond to which all subsequent actors playing the role are compared to. Moore did his take on it but you hardly have people talking about new Bond actors how they are in the role compared to Moore. It's always to Connery they are compared. Same goes for Chris Reeve and Superman. New actors are compared to him and only him. George Reeves doesn't come in the picture at all. Nobody is saying "how good is he compared to George Reeves?" but people do say "how good is he compared to Christopher Reeve?". Connery defines the Bond role, Chris Reeve defined the Superman role. You'd have to be an idiot to start claiming Roger Moore defined the Bond role and George Reeves defined the Superman role. That would be total BS.

Did you see Superman when it came out in 1978?

He literally says "he was good in the role" then places him last. This isn't Superman MOVIES, this is based on the portrayal of Superman. Dang, Brandon Routh even LOOKS and sounds like Christopher Reeve, like he you could tell me he was his son and I would believe you.

I thought Kate Bosworth was pretty awesome at least from a looks perspective as a brunette she's a stunner.

Brandon Routh was pretty good. He was sort of a lite version of Christopher Reeves. But the movie itself was ho hum, sort of like Superman 3 and 4, a waste of talent and money.

@@martinmayhew145, his name was Christopher Reeve, not Reeves. He had no relation to George Reeves. They just had similar last names, with the exception for the letter "S" in George Reeves' last name, not in Christopher Reeve's last name.

It also had the, hands down, best "faster than a speeding bullet" scene ever filmed. Routh did a pretty damned good job, I thought.

@@stevecreech3574, I agree. I liked the way he played Clark Kent/Superman. As for Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, I prefer Gene Hackman. He did a better job. Spacey's version was so-so, not as good as Hackman. I also prefer Margot Kidder as Lois Lane but she and Hackman were too mature to reprise their roles, so the director got a young cast who could pull it off.

Kate Bosworth was definitely the wrong choice for Lois Lane. Kevin Spacey's Luthor was OK. Routh made a great Clark Kent/Superman. He was just the victim of a so-so script. The plane rescue was epic. Best scene in the movie, followed by the bullet scene.

Smallville the show Iliked.. But I really ended up hating Clark Kent in it. This is basically the only show I can think of where *If The Lead Was Gay* it would have been better. That Clark did more to create Lex Luthor that Lionel Luthor, the Father that psychologically tortured he since toddlerhood.

Agreed, loved this show growing up. Teri Hatcher's Lois Lane was better defined than other Lois Lanes. Most of the other shows/movies that feature Lois Lane only seem to have her there just to be a love interest and sometimes rescue mission for Superman, so the character seems to be really one dimensional. With Lois & Clark, you got to get a better picture of who she is. Dean Cain's Clark Kent was perfect; good looking, charming but at the same time a little bit vulnerable. I do believe that Superman really was just an extension of Clark Kent; "Superman is what I can do, Clark Kent is who I am." And you can't beat the onscreen chemistry between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher. You are right though about some aspects of the show being ridiculous and silly. Some of the special effects definitely show their age but overall I liked the show so much that I ended up buying the DVD boxed sets of all the seasons.

The only problem I had with Routh was that he was too much like CR version of Superman.

But he was making a direct sequel to Superman 2. Why would the director want an actor that was nothing like CR? It's one of my favorite Superman movies but the story kind of sucked. Routh was amazing and did a great job portraying Superman as faithfully as Christopher Reeve.

As they said, Reeves improved the character and they had to update it based on him... Christopher Reeve improved the character and basically all by himselft changing his body, the scene on Superman 3 where Clark fights evil Superman is very well played by him, it really shows why he was the best even thogh the movie was lousy... Cavill just seems unable to that level of acting, it seems like he doesn't understand the role of Superman on DC Universe

@Sydney Piper Bristow Without knowing you, I can extrapolate that you are probably very young and never watched the original Adventures of Superman TV series starring George Reeves. I would even go so far as to assume you've never watched a single episode from the series. George Reeves hated playing Superman, but you never catch a glimpse of this in the series that lasted six seasons. That equates to around 45 hours of someone playing Superman. No one can match this longevity and impact upon the american audience. Reeves made Superman a screen icon. Most people got their buttons pushed when Christopher Reeve turned up many years later on the big screen for 4 films. Given the lousy scripts and dialogue, he was still magnificent. His performances were so riveting that a couple of generations thought there could be no equal. He was tall, well-built, handsome, and freakishly alien looking, which was a big plus. Then Brandon Routh came along and showed that much of what Reeve invested in Superman could be duplicated (or nearly so). Audiences generally didn't like/dislike Routh as much as they loved Reeve. And this was understandable because Routh was directed to play Reeve to the best of his ability. He was never given the chance to infuse his individualism and uniqueness into the part. He looked like Reeve, talked like Reeve, behaved as Reeve, but he wasn't Reeve. No one could (of course). I thought he did a superlative job within his narrow venue, and he deserved a sequel, but the producers were not overwhelmed with box office receipts and loved what they were reaping from Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. So DC/WB decided to reboot the entire mythos of Superman in a Nolan-esque darker version. They could have picked up Routh but wanted everything to be entirely different -- no mimicking of Reeve. Thus the producers went with Henry Cavill who had been in contention with Routh for Superman Returns. I put Henry at second position on my list because he had the hardest job to perform. In Man of Steel Henry did everything possible to recreate Superman under strict restrictions. The actor, like Routh, could not put much of his own style into the role but played the role he was given and did a fine job. I don't know about Routh, but Henry actually enjoyed playing Superman. And though he has been mistreated by DC/WB, Henry is still hungry to do more with Superman. He's the only actor to play the role and dedicate himself to it. You can see this in various videos (available here on RU-vid) where Henry is in the gym and bulking himself up for the role. When you see his torturous routine, you realize that this man wants to fit the image -- without padding or prosthetics. His steadfast earnestness and good humor definitely deserves kudos. Sydney, you don't have to take me seriously, but I've been into Superman since the early 60's. I was imprinted with George Reeves since TVs were small boxes showing mostly black and white images brought to us with "rabbit" ear antennas. When I was old enough I learned about Reeves death, and I nearly wept. When I heard about Christopher Reeve's horse accident and subsequent disablement, I was horrified. I was very happy to see him a few times on "Smallville." Yes, in many ways he may be the best Superman ... or could have been if he hadn't been tunneled into working on crappy scripts. I think Reeve even put his own money up for Superman III or IV.

What hurt the show is the limitations placed on them. They couldn't show Krypton or Jor-El early in the series.

Brian Levine if they can add a bit more to Cavilles version instead of making him a tool then it would be perfect! Make Batman like the older guy he should be but still active and you have a winner!!

Yeah Dean Cain is one of my favorite superman, along with Christopher reeve and Tom welling. I like Henry Caville but he's at the bottom of my personal list.

I didn't like Cain at first because he was so young when he took on the role, but eventually his charm won me over. When I went back to watching the likes of Reeve and and Cavill, both of whom are also great (though Cavill suffers from the lack of screentime), I found myself thinking it wasn't quite the same. That's when I realised I liked Cain's take the most. He just felt like a good guy. And in the end, that's all you can ask of a good Superman performance.

Always been a tie for me between Dean Cain and Christopher Reeve--probably because Reeve is who I saw as a kid.

It was boring, and they brought back Lex Luthor. Why not Brainiac? Or Doomsday? Or any of the number of cool Superman villains that could have made this an action-packed effects monster that it should have been. They were very limited in the old Christopher Reeve movies, but by 2005, CGI was a big part of movies, and they could have done something spectacular and memorable. Instead, they made some weird Lex Luthor movie.

Dude, it's been over a decade, and nowadays people only remember Returns because of lists like these. The film did the right thing by ignoring 3 and 4, but that's about the only positive thing you can say about that mess.

His reaction to hundreds of people burning was frowning and looking like he is taking a sad shower.
