This is how the 1980 Holden VC Commodore became super popular with car shoppers | Classic Cars

The Holden Commodore made an appearance and gave buyers a choice between a 4-door sedan or a wagon while offering buyers a range of engines to choose from. The Commodore was essentially developed in response to the 1973 oil crisis and the need for more fuel-efficient cars during the time. It was popular in its particular region, just like a contemporary Ford Falcon. This video will focus on the VC Commodore but will touch a bit on the prior, original VB Commodore.

Good video & well researched. The Blue motors released in VC were referred to by Holden as the XT5 upgrade. As for the starfire 4, several things 1. Holden wanted to expand the model range with a 4 cylinder, starfire was the most cost-effective way to achieve this, despite its poor performance it was a reliable unit 2. Holden needed a stop gap model until the new Camira arrived in 1982, so the starfire continued to soldier on in VH until it was quietly withdraw as Camira sales took off.

The Starfire 4 (Misfire 4) was released for morons who thought if the car was 4cyd it would get good fuel economy. They didn't think of the power to weight ratio. The 2.8 litre small six got better fuel economy and performance than the Starfire, because of the power to weight ratio.

I watched the video last night. I thought my message saved. It did not. I was impressed with your gathering of information in this video. I was shocked to see this video on Holden. I was also impressed. I was thinking while watching where is he getting this footage? I was impressed by that. You probably know that the Commodore was eventually sold in the United States as the Pontiac G8 and Chevrolet SS. It was sold in the Middle East as the Chevrolet Lumina. It was sold in GM South America as the Chevrolet Commodore, and in England as a Vauxhall. You are probably aware GM sold Vauxhall and Opel to Stellantis. I thank you for doing a video on Holden and sharing this side of GM. It would be interesting to see Holden Caprice and Statesman as well. The 1990's models look like Oldsmobiles. See the Cutlass Supreme sedan rear styling and window design. They looked like Ninety Eight and Eighty Eight as well. I am again impressed with this video and thank you share producing it as well.

Thanks for watching again. Yeah we touched on the Commodore/G8/SS and the Middle Eastern Chevy Lumina/Coupe in detail all in the Chevy Lumina PT. 2 episode. They were interesting. We got some cool variants of those cars (GTO, G8 etc.) but I guess people just didn’t buy them enough to keep them around. Yeah I always thought that particular Holden model did resemble a ‘91-‘97 Cutlass Supreme sedan, especially from the rear.

When the Starfire Commodores were released they were popular in New Zealand. Sure they were gutless but cheap on fuel if you didnt mind the lack of power. When they dropped in price 2nd hand a mate of mine in NZ had a heap of them and he would punt them up and down the North Island embarrassing many a car of the day as the car would handle well at highway speeds. With the light front end and good rear suspension it made it agile car thru corners but eventually it would get rounded up on the straights by the more powerful models around. If you are doing research for the next model the VH Commodore dont forget to include the NZ VH SS Group 3 sedan. It was a 5.0L V8 built i believe at the Trentham Plant near Wellington NZ. Only 30 were built and development was overseen by none other than race legend Peter Brock from Australia. It had a non ADR compliant developed 5.0 engine (like a non smog LA engine) which made it go much harder than its Australian sibling. Its extremely rare and was testament to Brockys understanding to how to setup performance cars of the day. Although i knew about this info 3 years ago it took me a fair while to dig up the article that alludes to these facts. It was hard to find. Hope you can include this in your upcoming videos. Ill try send link. Happy days....

The XD falcon out sold the commodore all the way through the 80s because the commy wasnt as large in the interior as the ford.There was a collective groan from the public when GMH kept the old 202 six......GMH didnt get it right until 1989 when they released the VN a widened and stretched opel with a Buick V6 mounted fore n aft with a fuel injected 5ltr version as well.

nqr, falcon didn't overtake commodore sales until 1982. Development cost of the VB at 110m meant there was no cash for engine development, so the reds were retained. The efi 3.3 (202) introduced in VK was considered to be one of the best versions of the six. As far as VN, it was the same platform as VB-VL but 55mm wider.
@aussieausdeutschland4245
@aussieausdeutschland4245 Год назад
Nah mate, the RB30 in the VL was the best thing to drop in the Commy, that shitty Buick V6 in the VN is an after thought due the exchange rate between the AU $ and the Japanese ¥ more expensive.
