In this video, we are going to discuss the 1986-1991 first generation Ford Taurus. Believe it or not, the Ford Taurus was quite a radical design when it went on sale in late 1985 as a 1986 model. It went on to influence other cars that came after it.
When the Taurus went on sale, it came available with four trim levels. The “L” was the base model that didn’t come with any fancy options. The MT-5 trim targeted foreign manufacturers, like Honda, and came only with an Inline-4 and a 5-speed stick shift. The GL was the next step up, adding more features and equipment than the “L” and “MT-5” such as power windows and locks. The highest trim level was the LX, which had every option box checked as well as a few features that were unique to it, such as those cornering lamps at the bottom of the bumper and a unique seat design, and the list goes on. The Taurus wagon variant had the same trim level options as the sedan.
The base model “L” and the MT-5 was equipped with the 2.5L HSC inline-4 that cranked out 90 horsepower. If 90-horsepower wasn’t enough, the “L” could be upgraded to a more powerful 3L Vulcan V6 that put out 140 horsepower. This was the same 3L engine that came as standard equipment on GL and LX model cars. Cars with the Vulcan engine used a newly innovated four-speed automatic. Models with the HSC employed a 3-speed automatic. The MT-5 had proved to be a slow seller, but it stuck with the 5-speed manual.
That was just a sample of what we discuss in the video. We'll get you up to speed. So, grab a drink and let's get down to the nitty gritty.
