The compact, front-wheel-drive Chevy Nova made its debut in the mid-1980s and offered itself in sedan and hatchback body styles. Being assembled alongside the Toyota Corolla, the 1985 Chevy Nova shared a platform and engine with its Japanese counterpart.

I actually loved these cars. It's pathetic that GM seemingly learned nothing from NUMMI.

AGREED! GM could and should be the "American Toyota" at this point with all of the collaborations over the years!

Not just NUMMI, GM has had partnerships with many Japanese automakers over the years and still holds fast to their shareholders short term profits over creating quality products

Great video. My grandfather had a '87 Nova CL hatch for five years and it was extremely reliable. I was personally a fan of the hatch styling.

Never driven one of these but it seemed like an OK car! Decent styling and power with the twin cam and Toyota reliability. Not a bad deal!

Yeah it was a decent car. The JDM Sprinter of 83-87 looks great with its composite headlamps.. too bad the Nova got watered-down a little bit.

i have one of these. its an 88 hatchback. one of the last 100 to roll off the assembly line. the hatchback never had the twin cam sadly. it came with the 4alc engine{1.6L, 8valve single cam, as far as i know they were all carborated}. its my project car now. racing coil overs, engine swapped to a 4afe 16V twin cam, ported and polished head, stainless steel 4-2-1 header, custom made body kit (kind of), and a much more to come like a super charger and a 5spd trans. 80s cars are the new 60s and 70s cars!!! ill always love the square 80s sh!tbox cars!

You did a great job . That was interesting the photo of the Japanese model it was based on. The car did have quality. It is interesting how this morphed into the Geo Prism which was also based on the Corolla as well. People did not realize this and assumed the Toyota Corolla was better, but it was built in the same factory. That is brand name recognition for you. I knew someone who owned one of these. They went from a full sized Ford LTD to a Chevrolet Nova. Talk about downsizing. The sad part GEO did not last and it was competing against GM's Saturn brand as well.
@MotorMaster_Stunticon
@MotorMaster_Stunticon Год назад
Yeah buyers cross shopped the Prizm with the Cavalier/Sunfire and Saturn Models..although the Prizm was much more reliable. Going from an LTD to a Nova was quite a downsize. Yeah the Nova did have quality. The JDM Spectrum from 1983 looked nice. Most cars in Europe and JDM already had the composite lamps before the U.S.

@@MotorMaster_Stunticon The Lincoln Mark VII was the first car that had composite headlamps in the United States. Then it was Pontiac 1986 6000 STE. Then it took off in 1986 and 1987.
@MotorMaster_Stunticon
@MotorMaster_Stunticon Год назад
Agreed. Yeah we discussed the Lincoln Mark VII having the composites way back in the first-gen Ford Taurus/Sable episode. I didn’t mind sealed-beams but back then composites instantly modernized any car. I recall how cool they looked back then.

These cars were the best. I had a 86 in college in 1993. It already had 150,000 miles on it and ran great. I put 70,000 miles on it in 2 years. Sold it with 220,000 miles still gojng strong!

Good cars, indeed. The Prizm was essentially the “next generation” of these NUMMI-built Novas.

Mom had a 1987 light blue sedan like the one in this video. I liked the car and its wonderful A-series four cylinder. The manual was garbage, however - very notchy. It got great gas mileage but was kinda floaty at highway speeds. I think the reason it failed in the marketplace was that it was more expensive than the rolling turd Cavalier next to it. Refinement and build quality was what import buyers expected and were willing to pay for. The American manufacturers on the other hand screamed "cheap, cheap, cheap" and sold on low price. Dad bought only Toyotas after his experience with his 1972 Carina. Mom preferred American until the last two bombs. She finally succumbed to this in 1987 and never looked back.
@MotorMaster_Stunticon
@MotorMaster_Stunticon Год назад
Thanks for sharing that. Yeah those manuals were notchy and not slick-shifting at all-especially when compared to a Civic of the same era. It may have been a bit more pricey than a Cavalier but at least it had much better reliability than most of GMs product lineup.
@anthony_rivera4735
@anthony_rivera4735 Год назад
Another reason why I think this generation Nova failed was because GM took a nameplate of one of their muscle cars from the 1960s and pasted it to an economy car. It wouldn't be the last time GM did that, soon after this nova came out, GM also brought back the Pontiac Lemans, albeit as an economy car based on a daewoo, which was not well recived.
@MotorMaster_Stunticon
@MotorMaster_Stunticon Год назад
Yeah GM did that with many cars. I didn’t mind the 80s Nova. They got a lot of pushback but were good cars in its own right. They were probably more reliable than 75% of what Detroit was producing at the time.
@nlpnt
@nlpnt Год назад
In 1985 there were still plenty of malaise-era 6 cylinder 4 door Novas still on the road. The Nova becoming a muscle car was an afterthought, it had been developed in the early '60s as basic transportation with the mindset that the Corvair Monza would be the sporty compact Chevy. If anything, criticism of the time centered on the Nova nameplate harkening back to an era people weren't nostalgic for yet.

These cars were a better buy than the Toyota Corolla in my opinion. GM was more lenient on comfort features that Toyota made you pay for. Most gave you A/C & cassette players. Toyota made you work hard for those same features and you paid for it.
