This video is all about the 1988-1991 Honda Civic
DX models came in sedan or hatchback format and featured the new fuel-injected 1.5-liter engine generating 92 hp and came standard with a 5-speed manual transmission. A 4-speed automatic was optional.
The LX model offered itself in sedan format only and also featured the 1.5 liter Inline-4 generating 92 hp.
The ‘standard’ model was stripped down. It featured the lower powered, 70 horsepower engine, minimal equipment and was only available as a hatchback.
By 1989, the Civic Si made a return. The Si was a hatchback paired with a 5-speed manual. This time, a 1.6-liter SOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder cranking out 108 hp and 100 lb-ft of torque was featured.
The Civic EX model eventually joined the lineup.

My sister bought a new 1989 Civic LX in February of 1989, the first Honda in our family. It was a blast to drive - kinda felt like a go-cart with a body. My friend's parents also had two 1988 DX sedans, one manual and the other an automatic. Yes the manual was quite slick and the engine loved to rev. It was quite a robust car, too. The headlights were terrific and the tape deck, remember those, sounded like it would self destruct while in fast forward or reverse. She wound up trading it for a VW Cabrio nine years later. Then trading that in late 2003 for a new 2004 Acura TSX. The TSX brought back memories of the little Civic as it was a blast to drive as well. I wanted an Si but it was just too tight of a fit. Not all Honda manuals are slick though. On July 26 1990 I bought a new pewter grey Accord EX sedan and never cared for the notchiness of that tranny. I kept it for 295k miles though. Kinda miss it.

Yes they are fabulous cars and I do recall those tape decks. The shifting is slick and precise on these cars-of all eras-in conjunction with solid reliability. Thanks for sharing your story.

I had a 1987 Civic hatchback. I bought it in 1999 for 400 bucks in a bit of a rush just to find transportation. Unfortunately it had been put through the ringer before I got it and I didn’t have the funds to fix it up. So much stuff broke on it, but It got me around for a few months until it finally died on me on my way to work one day. I didn’t have the money to even get it towed and it ended up being towed by the city after a couple of days sitting on the side of the road.

Thanks for watching. Yeah that’s typically the case with most vehicles-going into production a few months prior to its actual model year. So yeah we can technically say the fifth-gen is from 1991.

Really liking this channel. I have 3 Hondas in my fleet. An 89 accord SE-i sedan with a manual, a 91 Integra gs hatch and a 93 accord se sedan. I live in NY so they're sleeping right now bc it's currently snowing.

@@MotorMaster_Stunticon the 89 accord SE-i is basically a gussied up lxi. Has a leather interior, bose stereo, 4 wheel disc brakes, was only offered in a few colors. Mine is Brittany blue green metallic with the tan leather interior.

That was a great generation. The only way to have one was a manual - the automatic robbed far too much fun from the powertrain.

Oh wow, the first car I owned! Yeah, the stick shift was amazing. Loved that car, but it had two big issues: Extremely noisy at highway speeds, and slid all over the place in snow and ice.

My grandma drove the 4 door. I thought my car was going to be totaled out recently so I was shopping for a new used car and I actually found an 88 Honda Civic in red and with 56,000 mi for only 7 Grand. Some people would scoff at that price but that's a deal to me. That car easily has another 250k mi in it. It was CLEAN.
@MotorMaster_Stunticon

I didn't know the CR-X was a variant of the civic series, but looking at the design, it makes sense that the CR-X was essentially a hatch-coupe variant of the civic series despite being a separate model.

I watched. You keep it interesting. I may not be into this car, but it was informative. That info about the Civic was interesting. A down scale Honda Accord indeed. Eventually there were Hondas that were sold as Acuras as well in the United States.

@@MotorMaster_Stunticon That is why Accord and Civic are still here today. People keep going back and buying them. It is something they depend on comfortably. It is interesting how they modify the models before they sell them to the United States as well. I recall back in the day they said you could tell an American made Honda from a Japanese one by the battery.

Hey Rob, I had to comment again. Back then, I saw Civic model designs like Star Trek movies with every other one being good. (I liked the 2nd gen sedan as a kid, thought the 3rd gen was ugly, LOVED the 4th gen, didn't like the 5th gen, and I still own my 6th gen) But even the "ugly" Civics were the best cars on the road in my opinion. I have to say, I still miss the old '88 Civic. But my '97 is still going strong!
@MotorMaster_Stunticon
@MotorMaster_Stunticon 6 месяцев назад
Agreed. Despite being “ugly” they are still great cars. Definitely true about Star Trek. The even number Star Treks were great (i.e. #2 The Wrath Of Khan & #4 The Voyage Home) The same can’t be said for the odd numbers (#5 The Final Frontier-what a horrible movie!)
@SJHFoto
@SJHFoto 6 месяцев назад
@@MotorMaster_Stunticon I actually like quite a few things in the movie. That was the comparison I was making, that even the "bad" movies are better than most, as even the "ugly: Civic are better than most, (I'd take a '92-'95 Civic over a similar Neon, Cavalier, etc)

My first car was a used 1989 Civic LX sedan. It was very tossible in the corners due to its light weight and was very reliable. Been a Honda loyalist since then. Back then, I was also looking at a Toyota Corolla as well, but the Honda was simply more fun to drive and felt more solid than the Toyota.

This was my first Civic. I had a 1985 Ford Tempo before that (that was simply rubbish) The Civic was great. Sadly, I got hit by a Lincoln Mark IV and it was totalled. That's when I bought my brand new 1997 Civic which I still have. 360,000 miles!

Another great vid! Never owned one, but drove plenty of them over the years. The manual was a dream. These shift better now than alot of newer cars. The Corollas then were pretty bullet proof , but a Civic was more fun to drive.

Has anyone else ever noticed how the JDM variants ALWAYS looks better? It’s almost as though the domestic versions are watered-down. And where do you always find these highly unusual traffic lights 2:16?
@MotorMaster_Stunticon
@MotorMaster_Stunticon Год назад
It’s mainly because the JDM car has to be modified for U.S. specs. For example, they require larger front and rear bumpers, etc. than the JDM models. We have lights like those all over in my hometown.
