I had the '84 as well. I think it had the best exterior. I was surprised he left out most of the interior. The pods on each side of the steering wheel looked like a gimmick but actually functioned quit well. The equalizer for the stereo was also a nice touch. This car was not built for the winter. It had many problems. Also that 1.6L was a dog. Yet I loved the car as well. To bad it could not take the cold weather. I had to buy chains 1 day on the way home because I could not get up any hill to my house (snow).
I had the pleasure of owning a 1983 Impulse. It was an awesome car that drew questions wherever I went. You never know what might one day become a “unicorn”.
I bought a 1990 Impulse, nearly new back then. For $10,000 CND at the time. Nothing really compared. A high revving multivalve all aluminum engine making 130hp mated to a 5 speed manual. What a blast. It was reliable, fuel efficient and unique. People loved it for its quirky, unique and sporty look.
I bought the blue 91 rs 5 sp in 91 w 3 miles on it I still own it today It sits in my garage with my other cars Its was fast back then Loved it on the highway Got it goin 135 I take it out every summer Its never been riced out its all original Its got a future as an unknown collector
I bought a brand new 85 Impulse turbo...i loved that car. I drove it until 1997 and 250,000 miles....same engine! I traded it in when the front axel exploded. Isuzu had great engines, if you took care of them, they lasted forever.
@@MotorMaster_Stunticon yes, I live in Fla, so I didn't have any of the problems that some commenters said they had in winter...but the heat down here did create problems for the interior dash and knobs. Late in it's life, the interior wasn't as pretty as it once was, but the exterior and engine lasted really well. There weren't a lot of them on the road and it always got stares and people wondering what it was. Lol.
It goes to show that most Americans don't appreciate what' was brought to us to enjoy life. That's why all of the fun cars similar to this one and the rest followed in the 80s to 2010 are gone from the US. With the exception of the Dodge Challengers, Chargers Ford Mustang, and Chevy Camaro. It was all about practicality, comfort, and technology . So they give us FWD crossovers and EV appliances to not have fun in and throw away. I can understand we want to get to point A to B, but some of us like to have fun getting there while driving. But we can't because we're corrupt by technology that is around us. I love older cars in that era and still buy them today becauseof the passion. The joy of driving back roads, shifting your own gears and don't have a care in the world because it's fun...
Excellent comment, Eric. And yes there are a few exceptions but the way they’re talking, a few of those won’t be sticking around either (for example the Camaro is expected to be dropped, again). Nevertheless I still love the “old” cars and their simplicity and the fun-to-drive factor most of them deliver. Seems as though they had more of a driver-to-car connection.
Great review, I wish if you consider making a video in the future about Cadillac catera because this car has created some controversy, and there are just a few videos about it
I got my 1983 Azusa impose after I graduated in 1990 I had that car for 7 Years I love driving it I had the red one. Its beauty was like no other the handling was great. The design was awesome. I had to get rid of it. Replacement parts were very hard to find. It was getting expensive till this day. I miss that car forever.
I remember seeing the geo storm. I seen only seen one single 2nd generation Impulse ever, and I was like “what the heck is that.” They are rare. Definitely don’t see any no more.
I am a fan of the 1st-generation Impulse, because of its T-body origins in the Brazilian Chevrolet Chevette that was used as the launchpad for our own (U.S.) Chevette.
Had a 90 Cobalt Blue Metalic Geo Storm GSI. Traded in my 89 Beretta GT for it in 1990. It was definitely a little faster and handled a whole lot better. Was able to squeeze a pair of Kicker 12's behind the back seat.
Had a 93 Geo Storm GSI , automatic, what a car ! , lightly modified with Accel ignition and Sport suspention components , Also, Had a red RS, lightly tuned, was a rhrill. Untill , taking a slight curve, rear diff locked (no idea why) and lost control . Totalled 😔
@@MotorMaster_Stunticon yeah, that is the saddest part , here where I live , Puerto rico , I know of a black RS, but appart from that one , Seen no other for decades .
I have own Impulse xs 1990 blue 1.6 Impusle xs 1990 black 1.6 Impulse xs 1991 black 1.6 Asuna Sunfire 1992 black 1.8 I wish to get back in time to ride them again 😢
I own one... but I haven't driven it due to it being in pieces when I bought it... it has a bunch of upgrades I just need to find the time to put it together.
I had a '91 Wagonback, bought used in the late 90s. I loved the rear windows whose design allowed for them to be left open even in the rain. The door latch design common to all also eliminated the problem of snow and ice freezing the door shut, while I have never seen another car that used the same nifty paddle and bezel design to control wipers and lights. My brother had an RS of the same year and my father a regular XS coupe from '90 while my mother had a '92 Geo Storm Wagonback. Sadly the design and/or construction was highly susceptible to rusting and rust would go on to claim them all. With hindsight I would have loved to keep my Wagonback and convert it to an EV, especially with such a fitting EV-ish name.
I had three Impulses and my wife (ex) had two Impulses. It's actually how we met. She had a black '83 with the waffle wheels but the car got totaled in a wreck. She then got a blue '88 non turbo. I had a blue '83 that I traded in for a white 87.5 RS Turbo. That one got rear ended and I eventually traded it in for a white '89 turbo. I really miss that 87.5 RS though with the salt&pepper tweed interior.
I read that it was Isuzu that pulled the plug on the Impulse/Storm. Isuzu stopped production due to slow sales of the models and Japan's slowing economy. General Motors was planning on developing a successor to the Geo Storm on the Isuzu platform, General Motors was satisfied with the sales of their model but these plans never materialized. My guess is because General Motors already had F body and J body coupes as well as soon to be released Saturn coupes. In fact the first generation Saturn S series couple looks like an Isuzu Impulse
had the 91 RS. That thing was crazy. When the boost hit it would pull you off the pedal and slam your head back into the bucket seats. top speed in 1st gear was 15mphs and i had it up to 130 where it topped out. You could dump the clutch and it would hop sideways spinning all 4 tires. The sheet metal was so thin you would dent it if you leaned on it. Hard to get parts for though and my brother in law hit a deer with it and the deer totaled it.
@@MotorMaster_Stunticon Had to borrow one while my truck was getting a new clutch installed. The second day both door latches failed. For the two remaining days I had to enter the car through the rear hatch. Ahh good times lol...
Had a '91 RS AWD. What a blast to drive, and blew a few 5.0L Mustangs to the side. Kicking myself for getting rid of it but needed a more family friendly car. Very tough to find now.
When comparing the other turbo cars of it's time I think you should have included the Hyundai Scoupe Turbo it was equally rare but did lack the AWD system. I think it was 1.5L turbo (built in house for Hyundai) with something like 135hp.
Yeah I could’ve compared the Scoupe Turbo. I think at the time I made that video, I was aiming for affordable, turbo AWD models similar to the DSMs. Can’t recall if I included the SVX, but those were way more expensive and kind of in a class of its own since it didn’t exactly compete with the contemporary JDMs. Thanks for commenting.
That was my 1st car in 2003, a 1991 isuzu impulse 1.6 N/A fwd... buddy i bought it from had cut the springs to lower it, so the car handled like 💩... i was young and had no experience in cars, i just thought it looked cool and it drove, so i bought it for like 1000$ 🤣 ... 6 months later i blew the engine in it going 111mph on the highway! Prob shouldn't have pushed it, surprised it went that fast to be honnest! I miss it though 😢
2003…miss those days! 1000$ back then was a steal.. They were already rare in the early 2000s. As rare as they are today, I’m sure a well-kept example would be quadruple that amount if not more.
Like your content in a way. Been watching a few entries in your channel, every time I go away with this indescribable uncomfortable feeling. Sorry I have to say it but the way it is presented is like a murder mystery of sorts; as there is a piano playing faintly(ghostly I might add) in the background, sometimes it is inserted with irrelevant video footage which gives me that creepy feeling(especially the static snowy video 7:16.) The tone of the narration fits the theme of Twilight Zone or something of a paranormal nature.
Haha my bad bro yeah the Impulse was my first video and I didn’t have royalty-free music at the time. That’s why the newer vids have more “uplifting” tunes. It kinda supposed to be like a mystery-type “documentary” that’s why it’s aptly titled: “what happened to…” But thanks for watching bro!
@@MotorMaster_Stunticon I am so sorry, my sincerest apologies dear Antique TAGS. Kudos to your production quality, you got me creeped out indeed because I didn't know that was your original intent. Will not miss it for sure.
I have a 1991 Geo Storm GSi in a turquoise exterior and a auto transmission with ABS in 2004. The person sold it to me for $2,500 with over 200,000 miles. All it needed was a distributor cap. Had it for a year and I sold it $3,700 to a guy that know about these Isuzu build cars. and bought me a 1993 Mazda 929. Goodtimes
It was also badged as the Asuna Sunfire for a brief time. Also to every one impulse that was sold 10 Geo Storms were sold. Sadly the Geo model never got the turbo. GM didnt want the Storm to end that was an isuzu decision. GM scrampled to try and find a replacement for 1995 the new Storm but the car Suzuki submitted was too small and so the Storm was over. The Geo model sold strong its entire run. Interesting side note the Isuzu Stylus almost became the second generation Geo Spectrum.
My wife and I had matching 83 and 85 impulse cars. Both 2.0 Non turbo 5 speed rwd. A friend of mine had a girlfriend with a turbo model. He was pissed that it was faster than his Corvette. 0-60
the 4xe1 from the impulse xs had a bit over 110ftlbs of torque, the on that has less torque was in the imark, im not sure but i think the impulse version had intake flaps and has a lower rpm red line
