In this video, I'm taking you on a journey to the real Montego Bay, Jamaica. Montego Bay might seem like the same beach town that the media shows you every time you flip on your TV. But trust me, the real Montego Bay is way more beautiful and interesting! The food, the music, the people - and the stories they tell are the real treasures of Jamaica.
From the Jewish People of the Caribbean and amazing Kosher Caribbean Food, to Craft Market and Artisans, to the delicious food of local favorite Restaurants - whether you're a tourist or a resident of Montego Bay, this video is for you. I'll show you the real Montego Bay, including all of the hidden gems that you won't find elsewhere.

I am Jamaican, my family and I usually visit 3 times a year. We stay at resorts but we used to support the locals. We now stopped the reason for this, the locals over charge Americans for EVERYTHING. I asked a driver to take me from S hotel to KFC 15 mins drive. He charged us $75 us dollars. If they are selling mangoes on the side of the road and we go to support, they would sell 1 mongo for $20 us dollars. They are my people but they are big time scammers and this is why now I refuse to support them.

This happened to us in St. Lucia. One lady wanted to charge me $5 U.S. dollars for a tiny bag of chips. I was planning on buying some products to support her but I simply walked away, her loss. They just believe that just cause you live abroad you are swimming in cash. 💰 They don’t realize it’s a true sacrifice for many of us to take a vacation. It turns me off when I feel scammed by people. But it’s poverty and high inflation that makes these people so desperate, still don’t justify scamming others.

My family does their weekly shop in Mo Bay. Despite being so aware of some certain truths it is still upsetting to hear how local vendors struggle. Next time I'm in town I'm going to seek out Clover. The so-called Hip Strip should be completely redeveloped and shop outlets provided to local craft vendors and not the current Indian/Chinese/Lebanese-owned outlets selling over-priced mass-produced crap you can get anywhere. Jamaica is stunning, but it has its problems too I just wish the parish authority and tourist ministry would do more to improve for locals like Clover. Oh, and don't even get me started on the fact so many of those beautiful beaches you mention are NOT available for local Jamaicans to use

What a treat to see the woman displaying her crafts and horse made from wood, etc. at the beginning of the video. I was in Montego Bay recently, as well as Ocho Rios. It seemed to me that the great majority of tourists place themselves inside the "Sandals" type of gated restorts, and spend little time in the larger native communities....so that small shops do not get the traffic they deserve. At least that was my experience, and find it sad that there is not more retail economy available and active outside the gated resorts.....this shop keeper woman tells it from her heart and from truth to power, everyday shopkeepers who carry the heritage of Jamaica suffer the big money interests takeover since covid and before....if you travel to Jamaica please visit the native shops outside the fanciful gated bs.......

That lady's husband in the craft market is very TALENTED. Don't be fooled the Indians that owned the stores are NOT the originators of the culture they are importers and sellers. Those people in the craft market have the IP on those products that are their intellectual property. They are the authentic curators and creators of the culture just like the lady said we are the descendants of enslaved Africans.

I saw the Indigo Traveller video about Jamaica and it was so overdramatized, it felt very unfair. I was enjoying the vlog, until he made that erroneous statement! And with such confidence. Jamaicans could not go to his country and misrepresent his flag like that. I noticed he just about omitted the black except for the some lettering. Gross misrepresentation of our flag on all fronts.

Segregation basically. My wife is from a very small Caribbean island and along with her fellow islanders has also witnessed how big money is used to exclude the local population from their own beaches in their own country, as have I, and it's disgusting. It has destroyed what was once such a friendly, safe, welcoming and simple country as well as it's natural beauty. Security is one thing but when it morphs into blatantly dividing and excluding the less financially fortunate (read local people) it's something else entirely. Bob Marley would be appalled I'm sure. Any tourists who experience this kind of deliberate exclusion should never return until the authorities outlaw this kind of thing. They won't of course, because the corruption pays them better than representing their own people's interests and defending them against foreign takeovers and theft and domination. What I can never fathom is people who go to foreign countries and want nothing but "sanitized" pretence and absolutely zero in the way of cultural experiences that define the nation they have been allowed to visit. I'm not saying you should wander unescorted into areas known to be dangerous to outsiders in any country but that beach looks so sterile and devoid of any kind of real Jamaican or even Caribbean experience - because it is and I don't mean that to be disrespectful to the employees who I am sure are good, honest and hardworking people who are backed into a corner. My own experiences as an expat and traveller could fill a book on this kind of distasteful commercialization for profit and it really doesn't benefit the visitors or the host nations in the long term.

It is an amazing place with so many things to offer and I know you'll have the time of your life even though it might feel bittersweet too in some ways. Although I was raised in Brooklyn NY, I was born in Jamaica and am 63 years old, I have never associated the black in the Jamaican flag with negativity. Traditionally, yellow symbolizes wealth or gold, green represents vegetation, and black signifies the people, akin to how white represents the white population in the USA.

I love Jamaica so much. I haven't been there in so long and this video makes me feel "homesick". Every time I had to leave Jamaica, I was crying in the airport not wanting to leave. Beautiful place, beautiful people. Oh, how I miss it. My favorite beach was Negril. Oh, an absolute PARADISE! In Montego Bay, I went home with two wood carvings; one an owl, and the other a giraffe. The guy asked me what animal I wanted. I told him an elephant, he told me he didn't think he could do it in time for me, so I asked him for a giraffe instead. He came back the next day with a beautiful giraffe. I still have them both to this day. This was back in the late '80s.

Vendor businesses and commercial opportunities need to be more organized in the tourist areas of Jamaica. I love my island, Jamaica and its motto "Out of Many One People" which welcomes all!. The Jewish have always been a part of our society. The creativity of a Kosher restaurant in Jamaica along with Irish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and countless Jamaican ones is fantastic!
