Well you see, when you're looking for things to be upset about, you don't worry about forming cohesive and consistent critiques. Here's Arin's train of thought "game is bad, therefore everything the game does/ tries to do is bad."

It's like when he whines about having his hand held but, when something is slightly cryptic (Check his Majora's Mask playthrough), he completely loses it.

Arin's problem is that he can't tell the difference between disliking something because it's poorly done and disliking something because it's not to his personal preferences.

Arin's constant dick-sucking of Megaman X makes me hate that game, only because he arbitrarily decided that is the best game tutorial ever.

To be blunt, I think Arin made kind of a leap in logic in regards to how discoverable the wall jump in X1 is. To anyone playing X1 coming directly off of the classic series, sure you could theoretically be conditioned to think you can't wall jump and it could possibly be cool to figure that out in that moment Arin pointed out to. But you more than likely were conditioned by other games with a wall jump to assume you can do it if you're hanging off a wall or if there's another wall adjacent to it. On player discovery, let's compare this to a level in X2, specifically Flame Stag's stage. In X1 you get the dash as an upgrade, and if you're coming off that game, chances are you're aware of dash jumping, which is like it sounds- you dash then jump in quick succession. You can chain it with a wall jump as well, say, if you need to bounce off a wall farther than normal (Frost Walrus' fight in X4 comes to mind), too. And because the dash is now an innate ability unlike X1, the maverick levels have more chances to explore its breadth early on than its predecessor. When you begin Flame Stag's level, you're presented with gaps between platforms that appear to be most efficiently dash jumped across. After you make your way into the volcano, you have to eventually make your way out of it before it erupts, and this involves wall jumping your way out of a vertical chamber as the lava rises, akin to the vertical chamber you had to wall jump out of before it crushes you in the intro stage, except this one's longer, and has more variation as to how wide the gaps between adjacent walls are. Sometimes gaps will be wider and you'll likely feel inclined to chain your dash and your wall jump, but if you rely on this you'll quickly learn that you can't jump higher than a normal wall jump this way. So in situations like this the player will likely not dash jump off a wall when it isn't needed, like if the walls are close enough, and be able to intuitively decide when in this segment the dash jump is necessary and when just doing a normal wall jump is better. Sorry to get so tangential about game design in a GG themed TIHYDP comment section, but I kinda wanted to point out that Arin's idea of discovering mechanics unique to a game feels far more elementary than most people will let on -and maaaaaaaybe let the roasting of Arin and his ability to play games commence even further lmao-

@@Tony6Shot The funniest thing is that the tutorial in MegaMan X isn't even the greatest or first instance of it happening. Hell, I mean, look up the video of Miyamoto breaking down the first level of Super Mario Bros. World 1-1 is fucking ingenious, and it does what MegaMan X does with even less at its disposal

That's one of the reasons why I cannot stand Arin anymore. If a game is popular and/or mainstream Arin just _refuses_ to like or take it seriously, and if Dan tries to enjoy it or likes something Arin just shuts him down by downplaying or making fun of it. It also doesn't help that Dan has become so passive and just sits there on his phone reading out a walkthrough for Arin.

Yeah he just likes to cram it down Dan's throat with all this negativity.

Arin has the immature mindset that if you dislike a game, you must automatically hate everything about that game, hence why he hates everything about every 3D Zelda before BoTW. Of course, he also believes the inverse is true: if someone likes a game, then they must automatically enjoy everything about it. That’s why Arin gets so frustrated when he finds problems with popular beloved Zelda games, he thinks he’s the only one who sees the problems because he thinks everyone else ignores them and believes the games are absolutely perfect

I don't get it. I'm not saying you're wrong, but if you have it on just for background noise why do you want to read comments? If anything, you're most likely drowning out the noise with whatever you're doing. Not trying to be mean, I'm just asking just in case I feel like making one of these videos for myself.

@@dalejhunter1 from my experience, if there's a long stretch of pure bad gameplay onscreen. You could just tune off, which is why the sound for a note or comment coming up can be useful.

The terms "Grump" and "Not-So-Grump" used to have significance on the show. Arin was the Grump, he heavily criticized the game or made jokes about the games he played and the Not-So-Grump would be more easygoing and sympathetic to the game's redeeming qualities unless the game was objectively broken, like Big Rigs. Don't get me wrong, I like Dan and he seems like a genuinely good guy, but he is WAY too submissive to how Arin thinks and feels. I get that Arin is Dan's boss and that may cause Dan to walk on eggshells around him, but Jon was brave enough to call Arin out if he felt like Arin was being unreasonable or immature. The closest Dan has ever gotten to blowing up at Arin was during the Majora's Mask playthrough.

I swear every time arin gets lost in Zelda, Dan says, "Why not try this thing" Arin says "No way that won't work," before proceeding to use the same item 6 times that didn't work any of the times he tried it in the same spot before. Then, as it turns out, Dan was right and we could have cut out a whole 10 minute episode of Arin doing fuck all while complaining that the game some how is to cryptic and to handhold at the same time.

They're not newbies with little experience in doing let's plays. They've been doing this for years. Good luck trying to make Arin see that. If Arin had his way, there would no narratives in video games what so ever since he sees them as more of a tedious distraction than something that compliments the game or it immersion

I still think the beginning is a little slow despite that. There could have been a better way of getting that point across without having the opening section of the game take so long ( and this is coming from someone who loves the game)

Especially because Dan would not suck anywhere near as bad as Arin does, I honestly think that's the reason he doesn't play because if he did it would instantly invalidate Arin's ridiculous rants and tirades as well as most of the stuff he said in sequelitis

Dan doesn't play many 3D or modern games because of his thumbs and performance anxiety really. But yeah, I think he also knows if he DID play he wouldn't make for the "good content" that is Arin finding faults with games and getting frustrated since he wouldn't blame the games and own up to mistakes and such

Friends Without Benefits has a munch shorter and better play through. They spend WAY less time getting confused and lost. Pretty sure the FWOB series is about ~20 hours split into about 10 videos. However, they do pay little attention to the cutscenes, so maybe not the best play through for you. But it’s worth a watch.

Ben actually acknowledges and tries to fix his mistakes. Remember the MM episode where all the footage and audio disappeared for 50 seconds, then the game audio was desynced after it came back on? That was NEVER fixed.

You're probably right. But I also kind of think of it like the viewer is experiencing the grumps' journey alongside them, and the longer length helps immerse them in the experience. Future parts shouldn't be this long, though.

Johnny once started screaming at Elliot (his brother) over dying three times in a row due to the same hazard in Crash Warped and i can only imagine how mad he would be at Arin if they ever collab on a game Johnny knows and Arin is bad at. Not to mention Johnny WOULD take the controller from his hands

It's both "for the lulz," which is really he's not funny and doesn't understand humor beyond an elementary grade level, and also because he's incredibly spiteful and wants to ruin the reputation of games like this because he hates them, and he hates the fact that people like them. I wish I was joking, but that's the only conclusion that could be made after Majora's Mask and Skyward Sword. In MM, he admits that he hates that people like the game, and in SS, he admits he plays games he hates out of spite because he hates that people tell him these games are good. Hell, the entire channel, in his own words, was started out of spite. He also claimed to have gotten over that, but it's clear as the sun in the sky in the middle of the day that he isn't.

I do that in the later parts.
