Coming from a racquetball background the serve was a very important part of the game. It was confusing to me when I started playing pickle ball that the serve was just a method to put the ball in play. It seemed like throwing an underhand slow pitch to a big leaguer. I’m glad to see the serve becoming a more important offensive weapon in the game. Thanks for bringing attention to how the game is evolving. I’ve learned a lot from your videos and keep up the good work.

This was by far the best instruction tip on the serve. In general your tips and lessons are the clearest examples of sound, basic Pickleball.

Because of your comment to one of the posts here, I finally caught on to the lag serve. You said “Try not to actually snap the wrist at all. Just lay it back there relaxed and let everything else come through first.” I think it was the “let everything else come through first” that did it for me. You really do teach and explain things so well. Thank you!!!!!

Your the best coach!!. I agree with your summation that playing a safe 100% safe serve isn't enough if you need to move up. As you move up you will meet opponents that will easily crush your soft serve with a hard drive. So allowing yourself to move up with maybe an 80% but harder deeper serve or a well targeted 'tricky but different serve' gives you more arsenal to score points. Learn and improve on what you already know.

Fascinating! The comments on perspective are true. I try to hit hard, low, and with a bit of top spin. My serves always look to me like they cross the baseline, but are never called out. I just learned by feel how hard to hit the ball from the corner, not trying to aim toward the baseline. Will work on a floppy wrist snap. Use GX14 after you recommended it. One thing I've found. If known for hard and deep serves, hitting a soft angle shot just past the NVZ can really catch people off guard.

I agree with you on the changing game caused by the power of the new paddles and the influx of players from other sports like tennis and racquetball. I came from racquetball and I hit hard serves. When I am on it looks impressive and when I am off, not so much. It is something you really have to practice.
@rohgerr

One thing to note that if you do have a really good serve, try not to rely on it too much so you can develop other areas of your game. Rec play should be opportunities to develop all areas. Don’t play to win, play to get better.

I've long been a proponent of big serves.varied and well placed. I really liked your explanations...especially how you demo'd wrist lag which I've struggled with when teaching others. As one not really familiar with using video for training...can you advise what equipment you might buy to get started that works will on the court and for playback later as well? Thanks for a great video!

I serve to the players backhand as much as possible.
@Andy123Harris1
@Andy123Harris1 Год назад
And if you can’t target the backhand easily, the body serve is another good ploy. They have to move out of the way before they can execute the return.

Ditto on changing up your serve. I've been drilling on this lately, and have gotten pretty good with 6 different types/looks of serves. Totally agree with you on serving NOT just to start the point. I do take more chances when I'm the 1st server and early in a game or with a heavy lead. It keeps opponents guessing as well and not being boring. I play rec only so there's that. I play with some players that are serve "robots" same exact serve EVERY TIME!" Kinda weird.

@@PickleballKitchen Nothing odd about my serves, I just change up how I hit the ball depending on the receiver. Short with side spin (both directions) Hard low and deep, to back hands with lots of topspin. Low and real short. Back hand serve, lob serve. Keep em guessing.

I have a different mind-set on serving based on the scoring method that's being used, with rally scoring you give away a point if you don't get your serve in.
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen Год назад
That's definitely where things become interesting. It's also funny because you have such a massive disadvantage when serving with rally scoring!

Hey man.. I see you are using the elongated cx14. Do you use it for doubles and singles? Does it have the new gritty surface. You like? Thanks

Great tips! How much weight did you add to the end of the Gearbox paddle? I have that paddle and noticed the lack of power it generates (but oh the spin) and wondered if a little weight at the end would help. BTW: it's Ne-vad-uh, not Ne-vaaaah-duh. We're touchy about that. 😇
@PickleballKitchen

I didn't add any weight, that's just some tape to protect it. Wait, I don't see any differences between those pronunciations, lol! :)

I’ve been releasing ball off my front foot for contact. Recently had instructor tell me to release off right foot like a ground stroke. Now he hits off closed stance and I have right foot behind left foot facing forward. I do tend to miss some serves to left and right of the box occasionally. Any suggestions on contact point?

Your videos are great…as a beginner (have played 5x) it’s so hard to get practice time in the NYC area…I’ve gotten into two games, over my head with people much younger who seemed like ex-tennis players…I like the idea of Pickleball, but I thought it was a much more chill game than I’m finding out…I’m not really interested in the hyper competitiveness I’ve seen (I’ve had the ball blasted at me even when I told other player it was only my fourth time playing)…I’d like to take lessons, but only instructor I found online charges $100/hr, ridiculous amount for a retiree like me…still looking for my niche, and might not stick with the sport since I’m more interested in fun than dominating an opponent

Until they replace the traditional serve with the drop serve, it will always be a tool for advanced players. McGuffin and Koller have illegal serves, but no ref is going to call it when the swing is so fast.

Are you snapping on purpose? Try to not actually snap the wrist at all. Just lay it back there relaxed and let everything else come through first.
